Heroin use and neuropsychological impairments: comparison of intravenous and inhalational use.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Injection and inhalational heroin use are associated with different levels of brain exposure to heroin and its metabolites and differences in the severity of dependence, which might lead to differential impacts on neuropsychological functions. We examined the difference and the magnitude of difference in the neuropsychological functions between inhalational and injection heroin-dependent subjects and also compared them with healthy controls. METHODS: The study sample comprised three groups: 73 subjects with injection heroin dependence, 74 with inhalational heroin de

Intelligence and executive functions in frontotemporal dementia.

Recently (Roca et al. (2010), we used the relationship with general intelligence (Spearman's g) to define two sets of frontal lobe or "executive" tests. For one group, including Wisconsin card sorting and verbal fluency, reduction in g entirely explained the deficits found in frontal patients. For another group, including tests of social cognition and multitasking, frontal deficits remained even after correction for g. Preliminary evidence suggested a link of the latter tasks to more anterior frontal regions. Here we develop this distinction in the context of behavioural-variant frontotemporal

Cognitive deficits in euthymic patients with recurrent depression.

Neurocognitive impairments are found in people recovered from major depression compared with never-depressed controls. A total of 20 patients in recovery from recurrent unipolar depression and 20 healthy controls were tested using a neuropsychological battery containing tasks of executive function (Wisconsin Card Sort Test), attention, visuomotor speed, and working memory. The recovered-depressed group performed poorly in comparison to healthy controls on the planning and problem solving aspects of the Wisconsin Card Sort Test, even after controlling for subclinical depressive symptoms. There

Appetite Hormone Regulation Biotypes of Major Affective Disorders in Proinflammatory Cytokines and Executive Function.

Backgrounds: Evidence indicates that appetite hormones, namely, insulin, leptin, and adiponectin, play crucial roles in the pathophysiology of major affective disorders. However, whether appetite hormone regulation biotypes differ among patients with major affective disorders remains unclear. Methods: A total of 501 patients with major affective disorders (278 with bipolar disorder and 223 with major depressive disorder) were enrolled between 2018 and 2022 and clustered into biotype groups on the basis of fasting insulin, leptin, and adiponectin levels. Major affective disorder diagnoses were

Increase in cerebral microbleeds and cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND: In spite of increasing evidence of the clinical importance of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), the relationship between CMBs and cognitive impairment is still controversial. In addition, there are very limited prior data regarding the prospective association of additional CMBs over time with a decline in cognitive function. This study thus aimed to investigate the effects of newly detected CMBs on cognitive decline in a Japanese health examination cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study involving 769 Japanese participants (mean age, 61.6 years) with a mea

Abnormal functional asymmetry in occipital areas may prevent frontotemporal regions from achieving functional laterality during the WCST performance in patients with schizophrenia.

There is much evidence of frontotemporal lateralized abnormalities in schizophrenia. However, the relationship has not yet been examined between performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, with supposed anterior left dominance and event-related potential (ERP) asymmetry. ERPs recorded at homologous bilateral sites were compared using statistical permutation methods. Patients had an unexpected abnormal lateralization over occipital regions, preceding slow anterior potentials. This indicates a defect in early stages of information processing, which may contribute to prevent further hemispher

Performance on tests sensitive to frontal lobe lesions by patients with organic amnesia: Leng & Parkin revisited.

Groups of amnesics with aetiologies that included chronic alcoholism, encephalitis and ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysm (ACoAA) were examined on the Cognitive Estimation Test (CET), FAS Word Fluency Test (FAS) and the full and Nelson (1976) versions of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). The alcoholic amnesics were impaired on all four tests, whereas the post-encephalitic amnesics were impaired on the FAS and CET but performed normally on both versions of the WCST. The ACoAA amnesics were impaired on both the FAS and the CET, and scored at a level in between the other amnesi

Evaluation of executive functions in children with rheumatic heart diseases.

BACKGROUND: Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is a multisystemic inflammatory disease in children and young adults. The most notable complications of ARF are rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and Sydenham's chorea (SC). There have been many reports about executive dysfunctions with children who have SC. "Executive function" is an umbrella term that is used to describe higher level cognitive functions. The aim of this study is to determine the executive functions of children with RHD. We evaluated executive functions in healthy children with the same sociodemographic characteristics as children with RHD.

Neurocognitive Functions After 6-Month Buprenorphine (Naloxone)-Based Opioid Agonist Maintenance Treatment: A Controlled Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Medications for opioid use disorder (OUD) may influence neurocognitive functions. Inadequate power, confounders, and practice effects limit the validity of the existing research. We examined the change in cognitive functions in patients with OUD at 6-month buprenorphine (naloxone) posttreatment and compared the cognitive performance of the buprenorphine-treated group with control subjects. METHODS: We recruited 498 patients with OUD within a week of initiating buprenorphine. Assessments were done twice-at baseline and 6 months. Those abstinent from illicit opioids and adherent to

Testing associations between assessments of cognitive flexibility and eating disorder symptoms in adolescent bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive rigidity, or difficulty adapting to changing demands, is commonly observed in anorexia nervosa. Less is known, however, about cognitive flexibility (CF) in bulimia nervosa (BN) and, particularly, adolescence. Clarifying this relation and best assessment practices may guide informed clinical decision-making. The current study compared how two measures of CF (i.e., Wisconsin Card Sort Task [WCST] and Trail Making Task [TMT]) relate to BN symptoms among adolescents. METHODS: Data from a subsample (n = 78) of adolescents with BN were analyzed. Linear and hurdle regressions we

Diversities of behavioral traits and neuropsychological function in different substance addiction.

OBJECTIVE: There are various temperaments and personality characters that modulate the development of substance addiction. The pharmacological properties of substances would alter the homeostasis of brain function and influence the neuropsychological performance through different neurotransmissions which then facilitate diverse emotional and behavioral responses. Our goal is to assess the interaction between personality characteristics, neuropsychological performances and Stroop interference in alcoholics, heroin and amphetamine dependent persons. METHODS: Subjects with alcohol (N=95), heroin
