Social Perceptions of Konzo Disease in Nampula Province, Mozambique.

Konzo, a neurodegenerative disease prevalent in Nampula Province, Mozambique, presents debilitating symptoms known locally as "mantakassa" ("that which breaks legs"). Although the biomedical literature attributes its cause to insufficiently processed cassava amid food insecurity, traditional narratives often cite supernatural explanations, like witchcraft. This review analyzed the existing literature to understand social perceptions of konzo, focusing on traditional leaders' perspectives and their implications for public health. It found that konzo cases cluster within families owing to shared

Ethnomedical Beliefs and Utilization of Alcohol Herbal Remedy for Malaria in South-Coastal Nigeria.

We studied ethnomedical beliefs and utilization of alcohol herbal remedy for malaria in Uyo, south-coastal Nigeria. In-depth interviews were conducted with 213 respondents aged between 25 to 65 years, who were recruited through venue-based sampling. Malaria is recognized by its symptomatic presentations, which is reflected in different local names for the disease. Local etiological beliefs attribute malaria to mosquito bites, exposure to sunlight, fatigue, witchcraft, and excessive consumption of palm oil. There is a disease-specific preference for alcohol herbal remedies because they are acce

Superstitions of George Bartisch.

George Bartisch was a 16th century German ophthalmologist who published the first ophthalmology textbook in the vernacular for laymen and non-university-trained practitioners. His treatments and understanding of diseases rested firmly on Greek tradition, but he also was very involved in the superstitions of the day. This essay looks at the man and his mores. Bartisch believed that much of the suffering of patients had to do with sins they had committed, and that the devil was the active force in the world inflicting this punishment. Often, he believed, witches would carry out the devil's hexes

Zimbabwean teenagers' knowledge of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

A cross sectional anonymously administered questionnaire was used amongst 1689 secondary school girls and boys to determine their knowledge of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Their knowledge was found to be very low. While 80% could name an STD in an open question, only 16% could recognise the important symptoms of the common and treatable diseases such as gonorrhoea and syphilis. This finding is worrying in view of the fact that these common STDs facilitate transmission of HIV/AIDS. The awareness of AIDs was high but when it came to the mode of transmission of AIDS the la

Traditional health beliefs and practices among lower class black Americans.

The medical belief system of lower class black Americans reflects their social, political and economic marginality in the larger society. A moderate life-style is regarded as the basis for good health with special emphasis on protecting one's body from cold, keeping it clean inside and out and maintaining a proper diet. Illnesses and other life events are classified as "natural" or "unnatural." Natural illnesses result from the effects of cold, dirt and improper diet on the body causing changes in the blood. A number of beliefs about blood and its functions have important clinical implications

Understanding the causes of autism in sub-Saharan Africa remains limited, contributing to stigma and delayed identification. Community perceptions of obstetric fistula in Malawi.

It is well-documented that obstetric fistula, a severe birth injury, is caused by a prolonged obstructed labour that has not been relieved on time. Lay people often understand causation differently. This study sought to explore the awareness and local meanings attached to obstetric fistula in the rural parts of Malawi. We conducted interviews with key informants and focus group discussions with community members in purposively selected communities in the central region of Malawi. We categorised data using Nvivo 10 and conducted a thematic analysis. Findings indicate that there is considerable

[Possessed! Some historical, psychiatric and curent moments of demonic possession].

Being possessed by demons or evil spirits is one of the oldest ways of explaining bodily and mental disorders. The article briefly mentions some contributions from other disciplines, but considers in particular psychiatry's and medicine's approach throughout history. During the middle ages of Europe possession (and witchcraft) was considered just one out of several causes of mental illness. Astrological theories prevailed, in addition to the humoral theories of medicine. In addition distinctions were made between eccentricity, madness and religious visions and revelations. Traditional healing and its discontents: efficacy and traditional therapies of neuropsychiatric disorders in Bali.

In a discussion of patients suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and/or Tourettes's Syndrome (TS), in Bali, Indonesia, traditional healing and psychiatric perspectives are used to highlight the power and weakness of each to treat these conditions. Given they are drawn from the same culture, should not indigenous explanatory models provide meaning and be more efficacious at relieving the suffering of people with OCD and TS-like symptoms? What if they provide an understandable meaning for patients but these meanings have no efficacy? Ethnographic data on Balinese models for illness

Effects of ritual abuse: the results of three surveys in The Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: We decided to document the behavior of 87 children involved in multiple victim/multiple perpetrator sexual abuse by developing and administering surveys to families. Data gathered at 2 1/2 years (1990) and 7 years (1994) after the disclosures indicated the behavioral status of the children at different developmental stages. This data was compared to clinical information available prior to the abuse, and initial survey data rendered at 6 weeks after disclosure (Jonker & Jonker-Bakker, 1991). The objective was to document the behavior of the victims during the healing process. METHOD

Perceptions, beliefs and practices of mothers in sub-urban and rural areas towards measles and measles vaccination in Northern Nigeria.

Measles is of particular concern in Nigeria because of the high fatality rate, and high morbidity rate, particularly in young children. Measles and its complications are a common reason for hospitalization, indicating very low immunization coverage. This study was carried out to elucidate the contributing factors from attitudes, beliefs and practices of mothers towards measles and its vaccination. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Konduga Local Government Area. One per cent of the 500 mothers interviewed believed that measles is prevented by immunization, 16% that it is contagious or d

Knowledge, attitudes and practices concerning AIDS in Ugandans.

A survey of the knowledge, attitudes and practices of 3928 Ugandans concerning AIDS was done in two semi-rural communities in August 1987. Eighty-eight per cent of the respondents knew that AIDS could be acquired from other people and that having multiple sexual partners was high-risk behaviour. There were, however, many incorrect beliefs about HIV transmission, including belief in transmission by insect bites (37%), witchcraft (22%) and casual contact with ill people (21%). AIDS was believed to be curable by 15% of the respondents. As part of the survey, blood was obtained from 3907 (99%) par

Personality traits and other factors associated with psychotropic medication non-adherence at two hospitals in Uganda. A cross-sectional study.

Mental illnesses, like other chronic illnesses, require medications for both immediate, short term and long-term treatment. Medication adherence is the first and most important factor for better treatment outcomes. Non-adherence to psychotropic medications is associated with relapse, readmission, and early death. Psychological factors are among the common factors associated with non-adherence. Specific personality traits moderate the beliefs about medication that influence non-adherence to medications. Sociodemographic and clinical factors can also influence non-adherence to psychotropic medic
