Patterns and processes of pathogen exposure in gray wolves across North America.

The presence of many pathogens varies in a predictable manner with latitude, with infections decreasing from the equator towards the poles. We investigated the geographic trends of pathogens infecting a widely distributed carnivore: the gray wolf (Canis lupus). Specifically, we investigated which variables best explain and predict geographic trends in seroprevalence across North American wolf populations and the implications of the underlying mechanisms. We compiled a large serological dataset of nearly 2000 wolves from 17 study areas, spanning 80° longitude and 50° latitude. Generalized linea

A metapopulation model of social group dynamics and disease applied to Yellowstone wolves.

The population structure of social species has important consequences for both their demography and transmission of their pathogens. We develop a metapopulation model that tracks two key components of a species' social system: average group size and number of groups within a population. While the model is general, we parameterize it to mimic the dynamics of the Yellowstone wolf population and two associated pathogens: sarcoptic mange and canine distemper. In the initial absence of disease, we show that group size is mainly determined by the birth and death rates and the rates at which groups f

Birth and mortality of maned wolves Chrysocyon brachyurus (Illiger, 1811) in captivity.

The aims of this study were to verify the distribution of births of captive maned wolves Chrysocyon brachyurus and the causes of their deaths during the period from 1980 to 1998, based on the registry of births and deaths in the International Studbook for Maned Wolves. To determine birth distribution and average litter size, 361 parturitions were analyzed for the 1989-98 period. To analyze causes of mortality, the animals were divided into four groups: 1. pups born in captivity that died prior to one year of age; 2. animals born in captivity that died at more than one year of age; 3. animals c

Serologic survey for canine distemper and infectious canine hepatitis in wolves in Alaska.

Sera from 57 wolves (Canis lupus) in three areas of Alaska were evaluated for evidence of previous exposure to infectious canine hepatitis virus (ICHV) and canine distemper virus (CDV). Fifty-four sera (94.7%) were positive for ICHV exposure and four (7%) were positive for CDV exposure. All four CDV-reacting wolves also had titres to ICHV. The relatively common occurrence of ICHV exposure may be due to the greater resistance of ICHV to chemical and physical agents and its transmissibility via the urine of infected animals. The ICHV titres observed could indicate enzootic pathogenic ICHV, or ex

Limited recent introgression and ancient shared ancestry in Ethiopian wolves (Canis simensis).

Hybridization between domestic and wild species is an increasing conservation concern, as continued introgression could lead to genomic extinction. The Endangered Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis) is thought to be threatened by hybridization with free-roaming domestic dogs (C. familiaris) and African golden wolves (C. lupaster), particularly in human-dominated landscapes. Phenotype-based assessments during two field seasons in 1989 and 1991 have suggested that 8-17% of individuals in the Bale Mountains show signs of admixture, but the extent and timing of gene flow remain unresolved. This study

Survey of necropsy results in captive red wolves (Canis rufus), 1992-1996.

Through the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan, the captive red wolf (Canis rufus) population was developed with the intent of reestablishing wild populations. One part of the plan was a survey for diseases that might occur as a result of population homogeneity or that might impede breeding success and reintroduction. For this survey, complete necropsies and histopathologic analyses were performed on 62 red wolves from 1992 to 1996. Major causes of 22 neonatal deaths were parental trauma, parasitic pneumonia, and septicemia. Common neonatal lesions included pododermatitis and systemic ascariasis.

Clinical evaluation of sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) in maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus).

Sarcoptic mange is a disease potentially threatening to Brazilian carnivores, especially maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus). Recently, an outbreak of sarcoptic mange has affected maned wolves in part of their range; therefore, it is a priority to assess the clinical manifestation of the disease. A total of 20 maned wolves were evaluated in Southeast Brazil, 12 of which from research projects and eight were rescued between 2008 and 2023. Since the clinical signs of the sarcoptic mange vary considerably, the maned wolves were classified according to the degree of clinical manifestation and the

Monitoring of pathogenic Leptospira infection in wolves (Canis lupus) from Spain and Italy.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease of worldwide distribution with relevant implications for animal and human health. Different large wild carnivore species can act as reservoirs of this zoonotic pathogen. This study aimed to evaluate the circulation of Leptospira spp. in free-ranging wolves (Canis lupus) from southern Europe. A total of 281 kidney samples of wolves from Spain and Italy were collected between 2017 and 2023. The presence of Leptospira DNA was analysed by real-time PCR and phylogenetic analyses were carried out using a Bayesian approach. The overall prevalence was 3.2 % (9/281;

Assessing Lead Exposure in Free-Ranging Gray Wolves (Canis lupus) in Minnesota, USA.

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is both an apex predator and a scavenger in Minnesota, US. Monitoring the health of Minnesota's gray wolf population is an important component of wolf management. Concern regarding whether wolves are being exposed to lead through scavenging viscera of hunter-harvested cervids left on the landscape, led to our study to determine lead-exposure rates. In fall 2012, livers from 147 hunter-harvested wolves (89 females, 58 males) were screened for lead and 20 other elements by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy. Ten wolves (6.8%) were exposed to lead;

Oviductal Extracellular Vesicles Improve Post-Thaw Sperm Function in Red Wolves and Cheetahs.

Artificial insemination (AI) is a valuable tool for ex situ wildlife conservation, allowing the re-infusion and dissemination of genetic material, even after death of the donor. However, the application of AI to species conservation is still limited, due mainly to the poor survival of cryopreserved sperm. Recent work demonstrated that oviductal extracellular vesicles (oEVs) improved cat sperm motility and reduced premature acrosomal exocytosis. Here, we build on these findings by describing the protein content of dog and cat oEVs and investigating whether the incubation of cryopreserved red wo

Radiographic Assessment of the Hind Limb Bone Development in Maned Wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus).

This study aimed to analyse the growth plate fusion and secondary ossification centres of the hind limbs in maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) using radiographs. Data from three maned wolves estimated to be 3-4 months old were utilised. The right and left hind limbs were radiographed in the mediolateral and craniocaudal views once a month until 11-12 months of age and then every 2-3 months until 18-19 months of age. The growth plates identified in the hind limbs and their closure times were as follows: proximal femur (13-15 months), distal femur (13-15 months), proximal tibia (17-19 months),

Prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in grey wolves (Canis lupus) in southwestern Europe.

In Europe, studies on tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in wolves are limited, primarily focusing on one population. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of TBPs in grey wolves (Canis lupus) from Spain (n = 129), Italy (n = 113), and Portugal (n = 43) between 2001 and 2023. The presence of Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp., Hepatozoon spp. and piroplasm DNA was analyzed in spleen samples, and risk factors for Hepatozoon canis prevalence were evaluated using a generalized linear model. Overall, 93.3 % (266/285) wolves tested positive to at least one TBP, being H. canis the most prevalent (91.6 %).

First evidence of widespread positivity to anticoagulant rodenticides in grey wolves (Canis lupus).

Second-generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (ARs) can be critical for carnivores, due to their widespread use and impacts. However, although many studies explored the impacts of ARs on small and mesocarnivores, none assessed the extent to which they could contaminate large carnivores in anthropized landscapes. We filled this gap by exploring spatiotemporal trends in grey wolf (Canis lupus) exposure to ARs in central and northern Italy, by subjecting a large sample of dead wolves (n = 186) to the LC-MS/MS method. Most wolves (n = 115/186, 61.8 %) tested positive for ARs (1 compound, n = 36; 2

Dirofilaria immitis antigenemia and microfilaremia in Iberian wolves and red foxes from Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilaria immitis is a parasitic nematode endemic in the Mediterranean countries, which causes cardiopulmonary dirofilariosis in wild and domestic animals. Despite being recognized hosts of D. immitis, wild carnivores such as wolves and foxes are frequently disregarded when considering a potential role in the transmission of these zoonotic nematodes. In Portugal, studies available regarding D. immitis circulation are scarce, likely underestimating its relevance. To add knowledge on this, we sought to assess Iberian wolves (Canis lupus signatus) and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from

Gastrointestinal helminths of wolves (Canis lupus Linnaeus, 1758) in Piedmont, north-western Italy.

Free-ranging grey wolves (Canis lupus), which are presently recolonizing Italy, can be parasitized by a diversity of helminths, but have rarely been subject to studies of their parasites. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths of road-killed grey wolves from the Piedmont region of Italy. Forty-two wolves were collected and examined for the presence of helminths. We recorded 12 helminth species: nine Nematoda and three Cestoda. The nematodes were: Ancylostoma caninum (7.1%), Capillaria sp. (2.4%), Molineus sp. (2.4%), Pterygodermatites affinis (11.9

Restricted evaluation of Trichodectes canis (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) detection methods in Alaska gray wolves.

Trichodectes canis (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) was first documented on Alaska (USA) gray wolves (Canis lupus) on the Kenai Peninsula in 1981. In subsequent years, numerous wolves exhibited visually apparent, moderate to severe infestations. Currently, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game utilizes visual inspection, histopathology, and potassium hydroxide (KOH) hide digestion for T. canis detection. Our objective was to determine optimal sampling locations for T. canis detection. Wolf hides were subjected to lice enumeration using KOH hide digestion. Thirty nine of the 120 wolves examined
