Screening for a "trifecta" of executive function patterns in a large cohort of individuals with Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined three neurocognitive patterns or "clinical pearls" historically viewed as evidence for executive dysfunction in Parkinson disease (PD): 1) letter < category fluency; 2) word list < story delayed recall; 3) word list delayed recall < recognition. The association between intraindividual magnitudes of each neuropsychological pattern and individual performance on traditional executive function tests was examined. METHODS: A clinical sample of 772 individuals with PD underwent neuropsychological testing including tests of verbal fluency, word list/story recall, recog

The psychological processes underlying symptoms of thought interference in psychosis.

Morrison and colleagues have proposed that auditory hallucinations are the result of cognitive intrusions being misattributed to an external source due to such thoughts being inconsistent with the person's beliefs about his or her own mental processes (metacognitive beliefs). The aim of this study was to investigate the applicability of this model to psychotic symptoms of thought interference. Fifty psychotic patients with and without thought interference were compared on (i) frequency of cognitive intrusions, (ii) metacognitive beliefs, (iii) source monitoring and (iv) appraisals of an unrela

[Episodic autobiographical memory in depression: a review].

INTRODUCTION: Autobiographical memory and personal identity (self) are linked by a reciprocal relationship. Autobiographical memory is critical for both grounding and changing the self. Individuals' current self-views, beliefs, and goals influence their recollections of the past. According to Tulving, episodic memory is characterized by autonoetic consciousness, which is associated with a sense of the self in the past (emotions and goals) and mental reliving of an experience. Its close relationship with self and emotion strongly involves episodic autobiographical memory in the psychopathology

Functional cerebral asymmetry in hostility: a dual task approach with fluency and cardiovascular regulation.

The influence of hostility levels on verbal and nonverbal fluency, and the concurrent cerebral regulation of autonomic nervous system functioning was examined in 48 right-handed males, half classified as low-hostile, and half as high-hostile. Recent research has supported inhibitory roles for the anterior right cerebrum in sympathetic regulation, and the anterior left cerebrum in parasympathetic regulation. Two neuropsychological tests purportedly mediated by left and right anterior cerebral systems, respectively, are the Controlled Oral Word Association Test and the Ruff Figural Fluency Test.

Neural correlates of generation and inhibition of verbal association patterns in mood disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Thought disorders such as rumination or flight of ideas are frequent in patients with mood disorders, and not systematically linked to mood state. These symptoms point to anomalies in cognitive processes mediating the generation and control of thoughts; for example, associative thinking and inhibition. However, their neural substrates are not known. METHOD: To obtain an ecological measure of neural processes underlying the generation and suppression of spontaneous thoughts, we designed a free word association task during fMRI allowing us to explore verbal associative patterns in p

Conditional-associative learning in eating disorders: a comparison with OCD.

The acquisition of conditional associations using neutral and individually threatening verbal stimuli was assessed in 16 females with anorexia nervosa (AN), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa and normal controls, respectively. Groups did not differ in terms of age, sex, intelligence, depression, verbal memory and verbal fluency measures. Patients and controls were widely comparable on tests assessing neuropsychological functioning. In the conditional-associative learning (CAL)-task only anorectic and OCD-patients displayed an impaired performance with neutral material but not

Word retrieval across the biomarker-confirmed Alzheimer's disease syndromic spectrum.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is now conceptualized as a biological entity defined by amyloid and tau deposition and neurodegeneration, with heterogeneous clinical presentations. With the aid of in vivo biomarkers, clinicians are better poised to examine clinical syndromic variability arising from a common pathology. Word retrieval deficits, measured using verbal fluency and confrontation naming tests, are hallmark features of the early clinical stages of the amnestic presentations of AD, specifically in category fluency and naming with relatively spared letter fluency. As yet, there is no consensu

Is early age-related maculopathy related to cognitive function? The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study.

PURPOSE: Age-related maculopathy (ARM) and cognitive impairment are both neurodegenerative disorders associated with aging and have been hypothesized to share common pathogenic pathways. We describe the association between cognitive function and ARM in middle-aged persons. DESIGN: Population-based, cross-sectional study involving participants of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study, an ongoing cardiovascular investigation of persons 51 to 70 years of age, examined every 3 years between 1987 to 1998. METHODS: At visit three (1993-1995), retinal photographs were obtained and evaluated

Emotion/cognition-coupling in word recognition memory of depressive patients: an event-related potential study.

Depressive patients show deficits in memory functions. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Experiments with a special emphasis on the link between emotion and cognition appear challenging. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the emotional content of words on memory in non-medicated depressive patients (n=11) compared with a control group (n=11) utilizing event-related brain potentials (ERPs). In a continuous word recognition paradigm brain responses to repeated items are characterized by more positive waveforms of ERPs. This recognition effect ('old/new effe

Investigation of the CADM2 polymorphism rs17518584 in memory and executive functions measures in a cohort of young healthy individuals.

The common polymorphism rs17518584, near the cell adhesion molecule 2 gene (CADM2), was previously identified as playing a role in information processing speed in a genome-wide association study of executive functions and processing speed performed in a cohort of non-demented older adults. In this study, we investigated this polymorphism in a younger population cohort (≤30 years old, median age 19 years), with no known memory or psychiatric disorders, for which we had phenotyped all participants for memory function (n = 514), and a subset of the participants for executive functions (n = 338),

An analysis of the learning deficit following hyoscine administration to man.

1. Twelve volunteer subjects completed a free-recall word learning test, a number-colour association test, and a scanning task after the following treatments: saline 1 ml, hyoscine 0.4 mg, or atropine 0.6 mg, administered by intravenous injection.2. Performance on all three tests was not significantly impaired after atropine.3. Performance on the two learning tests but not on the scanning task, was significantly impaired after hyoscine.4. Analysis of the results of the free-recall word learning test indicates that impairment of learning following hyoscine does not affect recall over intervals

Autobiographical memory specificity after manipulating retrieval cues in adults reporting childhood sexual abuse.

Traumatized samples have relative difficulty in generating specific autobiographical memories on a cue word task, compared to nonexposed controls. Simultaneously, trauma is associated with highly specific intrusive trauma memories in day-to-day life. Possibly, day-to-day intrusions and memories generated to cue words rely on different retrieval processes, with the former dependent on close associations between retrieval cues and specific memory representations (direct retrieval), and the latter on iterative retrieval cycles through a hierarchical memory system (generative retrieval). This stud

Crowding effects on word identification in developmental dyslexia.

The effect of crowding on the identification of words was examined in normal readers and subjects with developmental dyslexia. In Experiment 1, a matching task was used. Words were presented either alone or embedded in other words. Vocal reaction times (RT) of dyslexics were slower and more sensitive to the presence of the surrounding stimuli than those of control subjects. Similar results were obtained in a control experiment using the same task for strings of symbols (isolated or crowded) instead of words. These data indicate that differences in crowding in control and dyslexic subjects aris

Prediction of sexual trauma via disruption of sex-aggression associations.

A variant of the Implicit Association Test focusing on the association of sexual and aggressive themes was administered to 90 college students (61 women) and correlated with a series of variables based on participant history of sexually traumatic events. A history of sexual abuse was correlated with increased difficulties in processing sexual and aggressive concepts simultaneously. Furthermore, this relationship remained significant after controlling for general level of emotional distress, and even after controlling for self-reported aggressiveness and positive feelings towards sex. The findi

Adult lifespan normative data (18-92 years) for executive function tests; the Stroop colour word test, COWAT and Hayling sentence completion test.

The neuropsychological assessment of executive functions is an important part of the diagnostic process for many neurological diseases and for predicting the ability of neurological patients to function independently. Unfortunately, for the majority of commonly used executive function tests there is a paucity of updated normative data, particularly for older adults. This complicates the process of a clinically meaningful assessment. To help address this, we provide normative data for three well-validated tests of executive functions, the Stroop Colour/Word Test, the Controlled Oral Word Associ

Sleep and its association with aggression among prisoners: Quantity or quality?

OBJECTIVE: The current paper aims to examine the association between self-reported sleep quality and quantity and how these relate to aggression motivation and hostile cognition in a male prisoner sample. The cognitive component of sleep, namely perception, is consequently a variable of particular interest and one neglected by previous research. METHODS: Two independent studies are presented. The first comprised 95 adult male prisoners who completed a sleep quality index along with measures of implicit and explicit aggression. The second study extended this to consider aggression motivation a
