Thriving at work, decent work, and motivation as pathways to employee well-being and work fulfilment: Study among healthcare workers.

Healthcare workers play a critical role in sustaining the quality, accessibility, and continuity of healthcare services, yet their own well-being and work fulfilment remain important concerns. This study examined the associations between thriving at work and decent work with employee well-being and work fulfilment, and tested motivational orientations as potential explanatory mechanisms among healthcare workers in Indonesia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 330 healthcare workers, using validated measures of decent work, thriving at work, motivation strategy, employee well-being, an

Moral Distress, Work Engagement, and Meaningful Work in Healthcare: A Narrative Review.

The psychological well-being of healthcare professionals is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of patient safety, quality of care, and healthcare system sustainability. Among the constructs most relevant to this domain are moral distress, work engagement, and meaningful work. This narrative review aimed to synthesize conceptual and empirical evidence on these three constructs and to examine their interrelations and implications for healthcare practice. A selective narrative review of the literature was conducted, integrating theoretical frameworks, systematic and integrative rev

Work addiction, work engagement, job burnout, and perceived stress: A network analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, the network theory of mental disorders has been used to conceptualize work addiction as a dynamic system of symptoms in direct relationships. This study aimed to extend previous work by investigating the direct relationships of work addiction symptoms with dimensions of work engagement, job burnout, and perceived stress. METHODS: These phenomena were measured with the Bergen Work Addiction Scale, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey, and the Perceived Stress Scale. The sample comprised 676 working Poles with a mean age of 36.1

Self-perceived health and return to work following work-related hand injury.

BACKGROUND: Return to work is an important outcome following traumatic work-related hand injuries. It is unclear how psychosocial factors affect the time to return to work following traumatic work-related hand injury. AIMS: To investigate the relationships between hand injury severity, self-perceived health, demographics and time off work (TOW) following traumatic work-related hand injuries and the influence of psychosocial factors on the readiness of return to work. METHODS: Data from 120 traumatic work-related hand injured patients were gathered. The Modified Hand Injury Severity Score (MH

Return to work following road accidents: factors associated with late work resumption.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse factors associated with late return to work in road accident victims. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ESPARR cohort comprises road accident victims monitored over time from initiation of hospital care. A total of 608 ESPARR cohort subjects were working at the time of their accident and answered questionnaires at 6 months and/or 1 year. For each level of overall severity of injury (Maximum - Abbreviated Injury Scale (M-AIS) 1, 2, 3 and 4-5), a time-off-work threshold was defined, beyond which the subject was deemed to be a late returner; 179 subjects were considered to be late

Managing disease on the goldmines: 'work-related' and 'non-work-related' diseases.

OBJECTIVE: The mining industry in South Africa makes a distinction between work-related and non-work-related diseases because of the legal obligation to provide compensation for work-related diseases such as the various pneumoconioses. In this paper we consider the ways in which this distinction helps or hinders the delivery of health care services in the mining industry in South Africa. In particular we examine the inter-relationship between silicosis, which is compensatable, tuberculosis, for which limited compensation is made, and HIV, which is not compensatable, in order to suggest ways to

Work-physiological synchronization as a determinant of performance in repetitive computer work.

The present study tested the hypothesis that performance would improve when the work rhythm of a highly repetitive task was synchronous with a worker's internal physiological rhythms. Experienced office workers (n = 20) used video display terminals (VDTs) to perform a repetitive, self-paced data-entry task in a simulated office environment over a 2-day period. Each work day consisted of six 40-min work periods. Work rhythm changes were induced by varying input data field lengths (3-13 characters) across eleven of the twelve work periods. The degree of synchronization between the work and breat

OBJECTIVE: The basic aim of this study was to analyse health-related exit processes from working life and their conditional constellations. It focused on biographical coping in the context of professional reorientation and Return to Work (RTW). The aim was to describe, among other things, phases, characteristics and mechanisms of coping with a double-folded biographical disruption, i. e. coping with the chronic disease and the vulnerable occupational situation. METHODS: The study focused on 6 women and 4 men between 25 and 57 years of age who were interviewed (episodically-narrative) at 2 dif

Shift work and the assessment and management of shift work disorder (SWD).

Nearly 20% of the labor force worldwide, work shifts that include work hours outside 07:00 h to 18:00 h. Shift work is common in many occupations that directly affect the health and safety of others (e.g., protective services, transportation, healthcare), whereas quality of life, health, and safety during shift work and the commute home can affect workers in any field. Increasing evidence indicates that shift-work schedules negatively influence worker physiology, health, and safety. Shift work disrupts circadian sleep and alerting cycles, resulting in disturbed daytime sleep and excessive slee

Millennials and the World of Work: Experiences in Paid Work During Adolescence.

PURPOSE: This article considers some important questions faced by youth as they enter and adapt to paid work. We focus on two key questions: (1) how many hours should teenagers work during the school year and (2) what available jobs are desirable? DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: To help answer these questions, we review studies that have examined the effects of early work experiences on academic achievement, positive youth development, and health-risk behaviors. We also draw upon nationally representative data from the Monitoring the Future (MTF) study to illustrate some new findings on youth emp

The effects of chronic medical conditions on work loss and work cutback.

Although work performance has become an important outcome in cost-of-illness studies, little is known about the comparative effects of different commonly occurring chronic conditions on work impairment in general population samples. Such data are presented here from a large-scale nationally representative general population survey. The data are from the MacArthur Foundation Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) survey, a nationally representative telephone-mail survey of 3032 respondents in the age range of 25 to 74 years. The 2074 survey respondents in the age range of 25 to 54 yea

Is working from home changing the meaning of work?

Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home (WFH) has become a common practice in the workplace. This raises the question of whether WFH changes the non-monetary benefits of work, such as job quality or social contacts. Thus, in this article, we investigate how working from home affects Jahoda's latent functions of employment as well as job quality measures. To this end, we use panel data from the German Panel Study Labour Market and Social Security (PASS) and estimate the effects of changing work patterns on the aforementioned outcomes. Our findings reveal basically no effects o

Rethinking learning from incidents in healthcare: a Safety-II model integrating work-as-imagined, work-as-done, and work-as-experienced.

Healthcare organizations increasingly investigate patient safety incidents using systems thinking. However, even investigations that claim to adopt a systems approach frequently revert to linear, event-focused reasoning concluding on deviations and recommending further training. A foundational question remains unresolved: when an incident review identifies a "deviation," does this represent exceptional behavior or the system's typical mode of operation that generally succeeds under varying conditions but occasionally fails? Without this distinction, explanations for incidents tend to focus on
