Impact of artificial colored lights on performance in working memory task.

The contemporary lifestyle obligates exposure to artificially illuminated environments often with a variation in spectral composition of light. The wavelength of light, perceived as the color, differentially stimulates the short, medium, and long wavelength cones. Through the non-image-forming pathways, light possibly affects cognitive functions including working memory. Commensurately, this warrants an evaluation of the effects of exposure to colored lights of specific wavelength, on the performance in cognitive task. A within-subject approach was planned to ascertain the impact of light in w

Arterial Oxygen Desaturation Hinders Gamified Working Memory Performance.

INTRODUCTION: Hypoxia presents a physiological challenge to the Warfighters during military aviation and subterranean warfare operations by decreasing the supply of oxygen to the brain, which results in a reduced cognitive function depending on the magnitude and duration of hypoxic exposure. Moderate hypoxic exposures, fractions of inspired oxygen (FiO2) of 0.11 to 0.14, show no effects on simple tasks, but complex tasks like working memory may be hindered. Unfortunately, people often cannot recognize their own symptoms of hypoxemia, which are individualistic at moderate hypoxic exposure. Thus

Working memory performance in disordered gambling and gaming: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Converging evidence supports that gaming and gambling disorders are associated with executive dysfunction. The involvement of different components of executive functions (EF) in these forms of behavioural addiction is unclear. AIM: In a systematic review, we aim to uncover the association between working memory (WM), a crucial component of EF, and disordered gaming and gambling. Note that, in the context of this review, gaming has been used synonymously with video gaming. METHODS: Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), we syst

Total choline intake and working memory performance in adults with phenylketonuria.

BACKGROUND: Despite early diagnosis and compliance with phenylalanine (Phe)-restricted diets, many individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU) still exhibit neurological changes and experience deficits in working memory and other executive functions. Suboptimal choline intake may contribute to these impairments, but this relationship has not been previously investigated in PKU. The objective of this study was to determine if choline intake is correlated with working memory performance, and if this relationship is modified by diagnosis and metabolic control. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional stud

Frontoparietal connectivity correlates with working memory performance in multiple sclerosis.

Working Memory (WM) impairment is the most common cognitive deficit of patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). However, evidence of its neurobiological mechanisms is scarce. Here we recorded electroencephalographic activity of twenty patients with relapsing-remitting MS and minimal cognitive deficit, and 20 healthy control (HC) subjects while they solved a WM task. In spite of similar performance, the HC group demonstrated both a correlation between temporoparietal theta activity and memory load, and a correlation between medial frontal theta activity and successful memory performances. MS pati

Effects of COMT Genotypes on Working Memory Performance in Fibromyalgia Patients.

Growing research has reported the presence of a clear impairment of working memory functioning in fibromyalgia. Although different genetic factors involving dopamine availability (i.e, the COMT gene) have been associated with the more severe presentation of key symptoms in fibromyalgia, scientific evidence regarding the influence of COMT genotypes on cognitive impairment in these patients is still lacking. To this end, 167 participants took part in the present investigation. Working memory performance was assessed by the application of the SST (Spatial Span Test) and LNST (Letter and Number Se

Speech illusions and working memory performance in non-clinical psychosis.

Psychotic disorders are characterized by auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs), and research has shown that AVHs are linked to deficits in working memory. Our understanding of AVHs across the psychosis continuum is limited. To date, little research has tested whether hallucination proneness (HP) is linked with abnormalities on experimental multispeaker babble tasks. Few investigations have been conducted to determine how task performance might be linked to cognitive functioning. The objective of the current study is to better understand this empirical gap. A total of 70 adults (30 healthy cont

A psychobiological perspective on working memory performance at 8 months of age.

Fifty 8-month-old infants participated in a study of the interrelations among cognition, temperament, and electrophysiology. Better performance on a working memory task (assessed using a looking version of the A-not-B task) was associated with increases in frontal-parietal EEG coherence from baseline to task, as well as elevated levels of frontal-occipital coherence during both baseline and task. Enhanced performance was also associated with decreased heart period (increased heart rate) from baseline to task. Infants with better working memory performance had parents who rated them high on act

Prenatal protein malnutrition and working memory performance in adult rats.

The performance of prenatally protein malnourished rats was examined in 2 different tasks of learning and memory beginning at 90 or 160 days of age. In Experiment 1, a rewarded alternation task, run as a spatial working memory procedure on an elevated T-maze, revealed no differences between the formerly malnourished (6/25) and control (25/25) rats when either a minimal or a 20-s inter-trial delay was used. Neither was there a difference when an additional, and conflicting, 'information' run was given to provide a source of proactive interference. In extinction, the 6/25 rats required significa

Intrasession Caffeine Intake and Cycling Performance After Accumulated Work: A Field-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Preexercise caffeine intake has proven to exert ergogenic effects on cycling performance. However, whether these benefits are also observed under fatigue conditions remains largely unexplored. We aimed to assess the effect of caffeine ingested during prolonged cycling on subsequent time-trial performance in trained cyclists. METHODS: The study followed a triple-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over design. Eleven well-trained junior cyclists (17 ± 1 years) performed a field-based 8-min time trial under "fresh" conditions (i.e., after their usual warm-up) or after two

The interrater reliability of a functional capacity evaluation: the physical work performance evaluation.

The purpose was to evaluate the interrater reliability of the Dynamic Strength, Position Tolerance, and Mobility tasks of the Physical Work Performance Evaluation (PWPE), a Functional Capacity Evaluation often used with workers disabled due to back pain. For each worker's evaluation, two raters were preselected among five trained raters. One of the raters administered the PWPE while the other functioned as a silent rater. A convenience sample of 40 workers disabled due to back pain and referred to an occupational rehabilitation center was used. In general, the reliability was "substantial" (0.

Noncommunicable Diseases Prevention and Cure: Work Performance and Gender Disparities in Mortality Risk.

IntroductionNoncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are associated with a less healthy workforce, higher medical expenditures, and worse on-the-job performance. The allocation of limited health resources between prevention and treatment is therefore critical, as it could influence both NCDs-related mortality risk and on-the-job productivity.MethodsUsing panel data from 38 OECD countries over the period 2000 to 2023, this study applies the system generalized method of moments (GMM) to examine (a) the nexus of prevention-cure-NCDs death probability, and (b) the possible roles of preventive and curative
