Anti-Müllerian hormone levels in nurses working night shifts.

Our objective was to examine associations between night shift work and serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels. We analyzed 1,537 blood samples from premenopausal female nurses in the Nurses' Health Study II, assayed for AMH. Rotating or permanent night shifts worked in the two weeks before blood collection and years of rotating night shift work were obtained via questionnaire. We found no associations between recent night shifts or rotating night shift work and AMH. The median difference in AMH was 0.3 (95% CI: -0.4, 0.8) ng/mL for ≥5 versus 0 recent night shifts and -0.1 (95% CI: -0.4, 0.3

[Melatonin: a new wonder drug?].

Melatonin, the hormone of the pineal gland is secreted during the night. It provides temporal information on diurnal and seasonal variation to the brain and the body. It is not a "classical" sleeping pill, and it should not be taken as such. The sole sufficiently investigated indication in humans is the treatment of certain sleep disorders from the group of sleep-wake-rhythm disturbances. These manifest themselves by sleep time of the day, i.e. in shift workers, after flights across time zones and in some blind and aged persons. None of the other promises, i.e. that melatonin conserves youth,

Effects of consecutive night-shift work on health conditions among car-cleaners of super-express trains.

The Shinkansen Super-Express trains of the Japanese National Railways, the so-called bullet trains, run from early morning until late at night. Accordingly the car-cleaners of the Shinkansen must do late night shift work. A self-administered questionnaire survey including items about health and work conditions was given to 246 workers at Osaka Station, who were then divided into 3 groups: Group A consisted of 102 night workers working 5 successive days with 2 days off, Group B consisted of 124 alternate-day 24-hour workers working 3 days a week, while Group C included 20 day-workers working 6

Who is too old for shift work? Developing better criteria.

Demographic and social trends in industrialized countries are expected to lead to increasing numbers of older shift workers, raising concerns about possible health and safety risks. For older night workers, the International Labour Organization has recommended options for transferring to day work or early retirement, but few States have adopted these measures. For commercial air transport pilots, the International Civil Aviation Organization has implemented a series of regulatory measures that could manage the risks associated with aging, including a mandatory retirement age, regular medical a

Night shift work as a potential risk factor for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: the Japan environment and children's study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to clarify the relationship between the night shift work and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). Moreover, we examined whether night shift work is associated with early-onset or late-onset HDP. METHODS: This nationwide prospective cohort study analyzed the data of 104,043 fetuses and their mother records from the Japan Environment and Children's Study. After excluding participants with multiple gestations, preconception hypertension, and insufficient data, 90,660 mother-child dyads were included for analysis. Night shift work was assessed using a second/thir

How Shift Work Impacts on Eating Behaviours Among Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

AIM: To evaluate differences in eating behaviours between nurses working exclusively daytime shifts and those engaged in night shift work. BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence suggests that night shift work exposed nurses to an increased risk of chronic conditions, including diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and cancer. DESIGN: An online cross-sectional study was conducted in May 2022. METHODS: Nurses were recruited through their social media pages on Facebook and Instagram. RESULTS: A total of 408 Italian nurses participated in the study. Of these, 26.7% worked exclus

A Pilot Study Using Casino Shifts to Improve Sleep for Emergency Medicine Fellows Working Night Shifts.

OBJECTIVES: Casino shifts, which end at 4 AM and allow sleep during the circadian "anchor period," may improve sleep and reduce fatigue for pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellows working night shifts. We hypothesized that using a casino shift model would improve perceived fatigue levels and measured sleep metrics. METHODS: In this pilot prospective observational cohort study, fellows worked traditional night shifts for one month (control) followed by casino shifts for one month (intervention). Sleep data were collected using a validated wrist actigraph (ReadiBand), and subjective percepti

The influence of night shift work and associated factors on serum uric acid in aircraft maintenance workers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of 12-hour shift work is increasing in various occupations. Shift work has been linked to circadian rhythm disruption, which may lead to hormonal changes and metabolic disorders, including alterations in glucose, lipid, and purine metabolism. Despite this, there is limited research on the potential connection between work shifts and abnormal serum uric acid (SUA) levels. Furthermore, the factors that contribute to abnormal SUA levels in shift workers are not well-understood. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the SUA levels of shift workers employed

Eating Habits of Surgical Intensive Care Nurses During Shifts: A Mixed-Methods Investigation of Food Craving, Acceptance and Eating Behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Shift-based work is a fundamental component of surgical intensive care nursing and has significant effects on health-related behaviours, particularly nutrition. Irregular working hours, high workload and limited access to healthy food options may contribute to unhealthy eating patterns among nurses. AIM: This study aimed to explore food craving, food acceptance and eating behaviours among surgical intensive care nurses during shift work using a mixed-methods approach in two hospitals located in northern Türkiye. STUDY DESIGN: The study employed a concurrent sequential nested quan

Decades of Night-Shift Work Induce Diurnal Disruption and Corneal Adaptations: Evidence from Pentacam Analysis.

We aimed to determine the effects of night-shift work on corneal parameters in thirty-five healthy individuals (24-59 years) in a retrospective cohort study. Among them, 12 hospital nurses regularly worked two shifts, spending a third of their nights awake, whereas 23 age-matched controls never worked shifts and slept regularly. Measurements were performed at least five times within 12 h. We analyzed the keratometric parameters of the corneal front (F) and back (B) surfaces, including the refractive power in the flattest and steepest axes (K1, K2), astigmatism (Astig); and corneal pachymetry (

Effects of Nightshift Work on Blood Metabolites in Female Nurses and Paramedic Staff: A Cross-sectional Study.

Nightshift work disturbs the circadian rhythm, which might contribute to the development of cardio-metabolic disorders. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to gain insight into perturbations of disease relevant metabolic pathways due to nightshift work. We characterized the metabolic profiles of 237 female nurses and paramedic staff participating in the Klokwerk study using the Nightingale Health platform. We performed analyses on plasma levels of 225 metabolites, including cholesterol, triglycerides, fatty acids, and amino acids. Using both principal component- and univariate-regression,

Predictive Modeling of Work-Rest Schedule for Agricultural Workers Using Heat Stress and Physiological Data.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSThis study provides practical, field-tested predictive tools to schedule work and rest in hot agricultural settings. Using routinely measured inputs (wet-bulb globe temperature [WBGT], heart-rate metrics, age, mechanization status, and simple lifestyle indicators), practitioners and supervisors can estimate safe continuous work durations and the necessary recovery periods for individual workers. Applicable to smallholder and mechanized tillage operations, these models support on-site decision-making to reduce heat-related fatigue, minimize injury risk, and maintain pro

A Prospective Observational Study Comparing Effects of Call Schedules on Surgical Resident Sleep and Physical Activity Using the Fitbit.

BACKGROUND: Surgical residency training has an extended tradition of long hours. Residency programs use a variety of call schedules to combat resident fatigue and sleep deprivation while maintaining adherence to duty hour restrictions. Nonetheless, there is a paucity of data regarding objective measurements of sleep during the different call schedules included in general surgery training. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to compare the quantity of sleep in 24-hour time frames across all types of shifts worked by general surgery residents at our institution. The secondary obj
