Occupational and Driving Challenges Within Sleep Medicine.

Shift work is a necessity for a society that requires 24/7 services. However, working around the clock can cause a misalignment with our sleep-wake cycle, resulting in sleepiness, impaired cognition and poor health. Due to the prevalence of shift work within safety-critical contexts, there is a need to further understand the causes and consequences of non-typical work on sleep, wellbeing, health and safety, as well as ways to effectively reduce this risk. Furthermore, disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea, which is the most prevalent medical cause of sleepiness, compound the adverse healt

Explaining the negative impact of workplace incivility on work and non-work outcomes: The roles of negative rumination and organizational support.

Research studies have shown that workplace incivility is associated with numerous negative work and non-work outcomes. The underlying mechanisms explaining why workplace incivility is associated with these outcomes, as well as contextual buffers of these relationships, have received less attention. This study extends workplace incivility research by examining the mediating role of negative rumination as a potential factor undergirding the relationship between experiences of incivility from colleagues at work and detrimental outcomes. We also investigated perceived organizational support and fa

Assessing Your Job: When to Consider Changing Jobs.

Over half of orthopedic surgeons will change jobs prior to their fifth year in practice. Commonly cited reasons behind the change include compensation, work-life balance, poor job fit, and dissatisfaction with management. Many of these factors are difficult to vet as a job applicant and are often only realized during the course of real-life practice. Possessing the tools and knowledge for effective self-reflection is crucial. It enables a clear understanding of why the current job may not be working and provides insights on how to transition to a different career path.

Work-family conflict, overwork and mental health of female employees in China.

INTRODUCTION: The "Green Paper on the Mental Well-being of Chinese Career Women" indicates that around 85% of Career Women face mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and anger, with these issues being more common than in their male counterparts in China. Both work and family are identified as two major contributors to these problems. Utilizing Conservation of Resources theory, this paper examines work-family conflict and overwork as significant explanatory variables and develops a moderated mediation model to investigate the mechanisms affecting mental health issues among Chine

Time Management for the (Busy) Otolaryngologist.

Otolaryngologists face growing challenges in balancing clinical duties, research productivity, and personal well-being. Increasing administrative burdens, rising health care system complexity, and heightened academic/research expectations contribute to an ever-expanding workload. Additionally, evolving generational perspectives emphasize the importance of work-life balance, requiring all of us to learn efficient time management strategies. Effective initiative, organization, prioritization, and delegation are key to optimizing productivity. Techniques such as structured task management, focus-

Barriers Pushed Aside: Insights on Career and Family Success from Women Leaders in Academic Otolaryngology.

OBJECTIVE: Although the literature adequately identifies the current gender inequality that exists in academic otolaryngology and describes the barriers to advancement of women in academic medicine, there is little information regarding the daily details of how successful women in academic otolaryngology achieve work-life balance. This study was designed to better understand how women in academic otolaryngology achieve work-life balance while negotiating family and childrearing commitments, clinical workload, and scholarly activity, as well as to highlight coping strategies and behaviors that

The role of recovery from work and work-life spillover in the association between chronotype and mental health problems: A population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the moderating and mediating role of work-life balance issues on mental health among circadian types using 2266 working participants of the population-based Healthy Finland Study (mean age = 44 years, 57% women). METHODS: Mental health was assessed with validated questionnaires: Mental Health Inventory (MHI-5), General Anxiety Scale (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire depression module (PHQ-9), a separate item for suicidal thoughts, and as actualized healthcare visits. Circadian type was assessed by the widely used single item from the Morningness/Eveningness Ques

Relationships between work-family conflict and family structure in the lives of working mothers in Hungary - a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The family, as the basic socialization environment, is a complex dynamic system that - as a whole and through its subsystems - is in relationships with other social systems (Bagdy in Family socialization and personality disorders. Nemzeti Tankönyvkiadó, Budapest, 2002; Lakatos et al. in Mentálhigiéné és Pszichoszomatika 21(1):56-85, 2020). The system with which the family system has long-term relationships is the work system/environment. Creating and maintaining a work-life balance has become a central issue in our societies, as they are two of the most organising forces, and recon

[Mentorship to support career development among women physicians].

Mentorship is a critical mechanism for the growth and career development of young physicians and plays an especially decisive role in addressing the "leaky pipeline" faced by women in medicine. In this article, we first clarify the distinctions between four forms of support-mentor, sponsor, ally, and coach-and review initiatives at the levels of professional societies, institutions, and individuals. We then present concrete examples from Japan: the Japanese Data Center for Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, which combines a registry scientist training program with flexible work arrangements;

Linking citizenship pressure to work-family conflict: the mediating role of citizenship fatigue and the moderating role of mindfulness.

BACKGROUND: With volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, employees are often encouraged to take on tasks beyond their responsibilities, which may lead to citizenship fatigue, and be associated with work-family conflict. As an important individual resource, mindfulness may buffer this process. METHODS: drawing on resource conservation theory and role pressure theory, this study examines the mechanism underlying the relationship between citizenship pressure and employees’ work-family conflict and constructs a mediating model that includes citizenship fatigue and mindfulness. The data

The selected articles were required to include an outcome criterion representing a negative effect of OA on employment, such as work loss, sick leave, disability pension (DP), loss of productivity, health at work, and work-life balance. RESULTS: The outcome criteria were grouped into 7 categories, including work participation, disability pensio

The experience of employees using telework as an accommodation for health-related reasons: the importance to focus on the employee-manager relationship.

BACKGROUND: Workers living with chronic illness or fulfilling caregiving responsibilities may encounter specific challenges in maintaining employment, often necessitating workplace accommodations. The rise of telework following the COVID-19 pandemic has drawn attention to its potential as an accommodation measure, notably by offering greater flexibility, facilitating work-life balance, and reducing physical and logistical barriers to job retention. METHODS: This qualitative study examined the experiences of individuals with chronic illness or caregiving responsibilities who use telework as an

The role of leisure crafting for emotional exhaustion in telework during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: After the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, many employees transitioned from in-office work to telework to slow down the spread of the virus. Building on the Job Demands-Resources model, we examined day-level relationships between job demands, home demands and emotional exhaustion during telework. Moreover, we tested if leisure crafting (i.e., the proactive pursuit and enactment of leisure activities targeted at goal setting, socializing, growth and development) is negatively related to emotional exhaustion. We expected that proactive personality would be positively related t

Psychosocial work experience after implementing hybrid work: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Hybrid work has become a prevalent work model, referring to the combination of office and remote work. Previous studies have found that hybrid work arrangements may positively affect psychosocial factors such as job satisfaction, work-life balance, and retention. However, hybrid work has also been observed to blur the boundaries between work and private life and increase work-family conflict, and more knowledge is needed on how hybrid work influences the psychosocial work environment from a longitudinal perspective. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the transition to hy
