IMPORTANCE: At a time when diversity in higher education is increasingly perceived as beneficial only to minority students and disadvantaging to majority-group students, it is crucial to investigate its benefits broadly.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether meaningful interactional diversity (ie, cross-cultural engagement that influences knowledge or opinions) is associated with key educational outcomes among White medical students.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study included self-identified White-only medical students who matriculated to a US allopathic medical school bet

Unequal representation of black nurses in the workforce continues to plague the nursing profession. Preconceptions and understandings of the discipline are underpinned by the dominant white racial makeup, which may challenge ethnically diverse nursing students' perceptions of their ability for success. The need for a diverse nursing workforce includes the challenge of enticing minority students into and successfully through prelicensure programs. This study of attributes of grit in the lived experiences of black nursing students revealed evidence including consistent efforts and perseverance t

Individuals with disabilities are significantly underrepresented in research and are often not included in discussions on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. The Advisory Committee to the National Institutes of Health Director Working Group on Diversity formed an ad hoc Subgroup on Individuals with Disabilities to develop recommendations on how to enhance the inclusion of people with disabilities in the scientific workforce as well as throughout the research ecosystem. The article summarizes those recommendations and how they came about, then contextualizes them for the spinal cor

BACKGROUND: The cardiothoracic surgery workforce remains underrepresented in racial and ethnic diversity. Achieving greater representation at national levels is vital for signaling inclusivity and encouraging aspiring trainees. We aimed to characterize the diversity of individuals selected as moderators in the setting of a national cardiothoracic surgical meeting.
METHODS: Program records from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Annual Meetings (2015-2024) were reviewed. Moderators selected by the STS program taskforce were identified, and their perceived race/ethnicity was assessed by 5 i

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The United States is experiencing a public health workforce shortage, elevating the importance of workplace initiatives that support employee retention. In recent years, state health agencies (SHAs) have increasingly implemented diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies to promote fairness in the workplace, which have been associated with employee satisfaction and intentions to stay. SHAs have also increased investments in health equity infrastructure, aiming to address population health inequities. Less is known about the connection between these 2 forms of eq

The United States holds the distinction of being the developed country with the worst perinatal outcomes despite spending the most per capita on health care. Black women are three to four times more likely than White women to experience adverse birth outcomes. These outcomes persist despite access to prenatal care, insurance, and college education. A long overdue racial reckoning has arrived, beginning with acknowledging the fallacy of race-based medicine and the role of enduring systemic racism as foundational to obstetric racism in the reproductive lives of Black women. IMPORTANCE: Alzheimer disease (AD) disproportionately affects racial and ethnic populations underrepresented in US clinical research, raising concerns about the generalizability of AD trial findings and the evaluation of treatment safety and efficacy for populations most affected by AD.
OBJECTIVE: To examine patterns and trends in the reporting and representation of patient race and ethnicity in US-based phase 3 AD clinical trials.
EVIDENCE REVIEW: This systematic review examined US-based phase 3 AD drug trials identified through the Trialtrove trial database between 1997 and 2023. Trials we

With Taiwan's advance into a super-aged society, the growing care needs associated with chronic diseases, multimorbidity, acute illness, and critical care compounded by the persistent nursing workforce shortage are reshaping the nursing profession. As part of this transition, a growing number of males are entering nursing education and clinical practice as members of gender-diverse teams. However, nursing has long been constructed as a feminized occupation, and its gendered work imaginaries and interactional norms have not dissipated as more males enter its ranks. This article is framed as a p

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) patients continue to experience stigma, discrimination, and inadequate knowledge among mental health and medical professionals. These barriers can negatively impact health care outcomes, leading to delayed treatment, mistrust, and unmet medical needs within LGBTQI+ communities. Providing culturally competent care to LGBTQI+ people remains a critical challenge within health and social care. The development and use of reliable and valid assessments examining LGBTQI+ health care professional competency continue to be i

BACKGROUND: Equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) is associated with improved decision-making and team functioning. Despite these benefits, the field of vascular surgery remains predominantly Caucasian and men, with underrepresentation of other groups. This qualitative study assessed the perceived EDI within the field of vascular surgery and explored strategies to foster a more inclusive organizational culture.
METHODS: This qualitative study involved semi-structured online interviews with vascular surgeons and surgical residents (November 2023-May 2024). Interviews focused on participants

Eating disorders (EDs) are often stereotyped as affecting the SWAG, that is, as affecting mostly skinny, White, affluent girls. Over the last decade, however, significant progress has been made toward increasing diversity in ED research. There is consensus that EDs affect individuals of all genders, ages, sexual orientations, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, with recent studies exploring social determinants of ED etiology, ED presentation, and developing diversity-affirming ED assessments. This article provides a brief summary of current developments related to diversity as a research t

BACKGROUND: Medical schools worldwide are integrating social accountability into admissions to address health inequities, improve workforce distribution and enhance population health outcomes. While foundational frameworks exist, implementation outcomes of specific admissions policies remain underexplored. This scoping review maps how social mission mandates are operationalized within medical school admissions and examines reported impacts on applicant diversity, geographic representation and workforce alignment.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute and Ark

Amid escalating public health challenges, the communications workforce plays a vital but under-resourced role in government public health. Using 2024 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey data, we provide the first national profile of this workforce (N = 48 518). The majority identify as female (83%), white (65%), and are relatively new to the workforce, with 73% having held their position for 5 years or less. While nearly half (49%) report spending some time working in Communications/Public Information and 73% in Health Education, only 11% and 8%, respectively, identify these as

Nursing remains female-dominated globally, with gender stereotypes hindering workforce diversity. Male nurses account for 2% to 5% of China's nursing workforce, and Guangdong/Guangxi lack studies on patients' perceptions of male nursing interns. This study aims to explore relationships between gender stereotypes, patient satisfaction, and willingness to receive care from male/female nursing interns in Guangdong/Guangxi and identify influencing factors. In this study, a multicenter cross-sectional survey (Mar-Jun 2025) enrolled 460 inpatients from 4 tertiary hospitals (2 each in Guangdong/Guang

What accounts for variation across racial and ethnic groups in drug use and harms related to substance use? While explanatory mechanisms for racial and ethnic disparities include differential access to and use of health services, a myriad of other factors, including racism and historical trauma, contribute to drug-related disparities. Furthermore, the addiction scientific workforce, like the full biomedical research enterprise, lacks diversity. This deficit undercuts U.S. scientific leadership and is a major challenge for the field. To address these entrenched problems, the National Institute

The current U.S. sociopolitical climate-marked by recent targeted anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) legislation and executive orders (i.e., sociopolitical stressors)-including those focused on antidiversity, equity, and inclusion-leads to heightened minority stress among current LGBTQ+ public health trainees, threatening their well-being and career trajectories. Macro-level (distal) stressors, such as discriminatory funding cuts, institutional censorship, and sociopolitical hostility interact with proximal stressors (i.e., expectatio
