African trypanosomosis is a major threat to livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa. Although the disease mainly concerns cattle, dogs can also be infected by Trypanosoma spp. transmitted by tsetse flies. Between 1997 and 2003, the parasite Trypanosoma congolense was identified in French military dogs sent to Africa. On infected dogs, the diagnosis was made during the mission or just after the return to France, depending on when the symptoms appeared. The high incidence and mortality rate among these dogs led veterinarians of the French Health Service to implement a systematic chemoprophyla

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a life-threatening condition in dogs and other species in which the stomach dilates and rotates on itself. The etiology of the disease is multi-factorial, but explicit precipitating causes are unknown. This study sought to determine if there was a significant association between changes in hourly-measured temperature and/or atmospheric pressure and the occurrence of GDV in the population of high-risk working dogs in Texas. The odds of a day being a GDV day, given certain temperature and atmospheric pressure conditions for that day or the day before, was est

INTRODUCTION: Working dogs deployed to disaster settings face exposure risks to environmental contaminants. On June 24, 2021, a 12-story beachfront condominium partially collapsed in Surfside, FL, leading to the deployment of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urban search and rescue (US&R) teams including working dogs. Hazards identified at the site during ongoing US&R operations included concrete/silica dust, biological materials, household chemicals, pool chemicals/fuel/other regulated materials (ORM), and products of combustion.
METHODS: Samples were analyzed from areas of standin

INTRODUCTION: Military working dogs (MWDs) are deployed to and work in the same environments as Service members and, therefore, are exposed to the same hazards. To better understand the potential consequences of military-related exposures on health, the Exposure Science Program, Department of Veterans Affairs partnered with Army Veterinary Services and the Joint Pathology Center to create the Deceased MWD Database (DMWDD). This database includes all MWDs that had completed veterinary records from January 1991 onward, with demographics, deployment information, and pathology findings of 2,922 MW

BACKGROUND: Tail wounds in military working dogs (MWDs) are a clinically significant and challenging condition characterized by recurrent trauma and delayed healing. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has been proposed as a non-invasive therapy to enhance wound repair.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical presentation of tail wounds in MWDs and to evaluate the effect of PBM as an adjunctive treatment.
METHODS: This prospective study included an observational cohort of 21 active MWDs (age 4.1 ± 2.2 years; 95% male; predominantly Belgian Malinois [57%]) with clinically evident tail wounds and a rando

BACKGROUND: Age-related changes in physiological parameters are crucial in understanding the health and performance of working dogs, particularly those in demanding roles such as military and law enforcement. However, limited research exists on how aging affects the hematological and biochemical health of these dogs.
AIM: This study aims to characterize age-related variations in hematological and biochemical parameters in working Belgian Shepherd dogs to provide insights that could inform health management strategies for these animals.
METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 26 male Belgi

Traditionally, canine degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLS) has been defined as a multifactorial syndrome characterized by lumbosacral pain triggered by the compression of the nerve rootlets of the cauda equina. There is still no consensus on the treatment of this condition, probably because there are a plethora of possible causes. In addition to compression, inflammation is a very important factor in the physiopathology of the disorder. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) consists of an increased concentration of autologous platelets suspended in a small amount of plasma. Platelets are a source of s

CASE HISTORY: A 5-year-old male Heading dog (working Collie) and a 2-year-old female Huntaway each presented with non-weight-bearing lameness of a hindlimb after jumping or falling with the leg trapped in a gate or motorbike carrier.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Pain and swelling were localised to the stifle, and radiographs revealed a fracture of the medial condyle of the distal femur in each case.
DIAGNOSIS: Medial unicondylar, intra-articular fractures of the distal femur.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Open reduction and internal fixation provided an excellent outcome in each case. Open reduction was achiev

One of the primary objectives of the Oncology Pathology Working Group (OPWG) is for oncologists and pathologists to collaboratively generate consensus documents to standardise aspects of and provide guidelines for oncologic pathology in veterinary species. Consensus is established through critical review of the peer-reviewed literature relevant to a subgroup's particular focus. In this article, the authors provide a critical review of the current literature regarding methods for the diagnosis and classification of primary nodal lymphomas of dogs, including histopathology, cytopathology, immuno

Working dogs are at a high risk of canine non-pyrogenic hyperthermia, a life-threatening condition that can occur due to physical exertion or environmental factors that inhibit dogs' ability to cool themselves. Two frequently recommended cooling methods to reduce body temperature are water immersion and the application of isopropyl alcohol to paw pads. This cross-over study compared the relative efficacy of these methods in 12 working-dogs-in-training with post-exertional heat stress. On each study day, dogs had a physical exam and performed a warm-up exercise followed by sequential recalls in

BACKGROUND: Military working dogs (MWDs) are a major asset in the theater of operations. Their unique abilities make them ideal for tasks such as tracking, patrol, and scent detection. MWDs deployed to a war zone are exposed to harsh environments and battlefield dangers that increase their risk of disease, injuries, and death. Although canines have been used extensively in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), no published studies have reported detailed causes of death among MWDs deployed to these conflicts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Potential cases were defined as

Rabies virus (RABV), canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus type-2 (CPV-2), and canine influenza A virus (CIV) are important contagious pathogens in canine populations. To assess post-vaccination immunity against RABV, CDV and CPV-2, and serological evidence of exposure to influenza A virus in military working dogs (MWDs) in Korea, we tested blood samples of 78 MWDs by fluorescent antibody virus neutralization (FAVN) for RABV, and by commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for CDV, CPV-2, and CIV. Korean MWDs had high antibody-positive rates against RABV (97.4

Early olfactory imprinting has been proposed as a strategy to enhance the performance of detection dogs, yet empirical evidence from operational contexts remains limited. This study evaluated the effects of early exposure to target odours on four core detection variables: sensitivity under tight-containment conditions, reaction distance, work endurance, and detection reliability. Twenty operational adult dogs served as controls, and four dogs underwent an early-learning protocol beginning during sensitive stages of neurosensory development. All dogs completed parallel test batteries under equi
