How I do it: endoscopic evacuation of intraventricular lesions using a flexible endoscope in combination with an angiographic catheter.

BACKGROUND: In intraventricular surgery using a flexible endoscope, the lesion is usually aspirated via the working channel. However, the surgical view during aspiration is extremely poor because the objective lens is located adjacent to the working channel. METHOD: To address this issue, we developed a novel surgical procedure using an angiographic catheter. In this procedure, the catheter is inserted into the working channel, and the lesion is aspirated through the catheter. Besides, continuous intraventricular irrigation is performed via the gap between the catheter and the working channel

[An improvement in occupational medical expertise in dermatology and venereology].

Poor organization of medical expert evaluation results in unjustified labor time loss and waste of social insurance money. Test controls and check-ups of the activities of outpatient prophylactic centers have revealed inadequate theoretical knowledge of the basic aspects of medical expert evaluation of the working capacity and poor practical skills of physicians in keeping files and records. Analysis of the status of medical expert evaluation of the working capacity of dermatological and venereological patients and analysis of physicians' scope of knowledge in this field help outline a compreh

A Longitudinal Examination of the Persistence of Late Emerging Reading Disabilities.

There are some children who encounter unexpected reading difficulties in the fourth grade. This phenomenon has been described as late emerging reading disabilities (LERD). Using Grade 4 as a starting point, this study examined the reading development of 964 children between kindergarten and Grade 7. The results showed that 72.0% of children had typical reading performance in Grade 4, whereas there was 0.7% with poor word reading, 12.6% with poor reading comprehension, 2.5% with poor word reading and comprehension, and 12.2% with borderline performance. We also showed that there were similar pr

'We were treated like we are nobody': a mixed-methods study of medical doctors' internship experiences in Kenya and Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: Medical interns are an important workforce providing first-line healthcare services in hospitals. The internship year is important for doctors as they transition from theoretical learning with minimal hands-on work under supervision to clinical practice roles with considerable responsibility. However, this transition is considered stressful and commonly leads to burn-out due to challenging working conditions and an ongoing need for learning and assessment, which is worse in countries with resource constraints. In this study, we provide an overview of medical doctors' internship expe

Social factors and outcome in a five-year follow-up study of 276 patients with sciatica.

Social factors of 179 operated and 97 non-operated patients one year after hospitalization due to low back pain and sciatica were tested by multi-variate regression analysis in relation to the five-year outcome evaluated according to the WHO Handicap Classification. For operated men a subjective working incapacity (relative risk RR = 4.6) and co-morbidity (RR = 2.7) predicted a poor outcome. For operated women the predictive factors were subjective working incapacity (RR = 3.2) and older age (RR = 1.9). For non-operated men an increased occurrence of occupational hazards (RR = 3.6) and for non

Hierarchical recruitment of competition alleviates working memory overload in a frontoparietal model.

The storage limitations of visual working memory have been the subject of intense research interest for several decades, but few studies have systematically investigated the dependence of these limitations on memory load that exceeds our retention abilities. Under this real-world scenario, performance typically declines beyond a critical load among low-performing subjects, a phenomenon known as working memory overload. We used a frontoparietal cortical model to test the hypothesis that high-performing subjects select a manageable number of items for storage, thereby avoiding overload. The mode

'Why wouldn't I want to go?': doctor migration, retention, return, and Ireland's future medical workforce.

Health workforce shortages pose a challenge to European health systems. Challenging working conditions in healthcare were intensified by the global financial crisis and the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In Ireland deteriorating working conditions for hospital doctors triggered a pattern of emigration and an increased dependence on international medical graduates. This article seeks to better understand doctor emigration and its implications for Ireland's future workforce, drawing on the case of Irish doctors who emigrated to Australia. The paper draws on three forms of data:

Pathways through which health influences early retirement: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Due to the aging of the population, there is a societal need for workers to prolong their working lives. In the Netherlands, many employees still leave the workforce before the official retirement age of 65. Previous quantitative research showed that poor self-perceived health is a risk factor of (non-disability) early retirement. However, little is known on how poor health may lead to early retirement, and why poor health leads to early retirement in some employees, but not in others. Therefore, the present qualitative study aims to identify in which ways health influences early r
