[The academician N. N. Burdenko - the participant of four wars (to the seventy fifth Anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War)].

On the eve of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, one should recall the great neurosurgeon, scientist, organizer of military medical science, founder of prominent scientific school, academician N. N. Burdenko. His first experience as direct participant in warfare occurred in 1904 when he was medical student. He went through four wars being permanently at the front line. He carried out extremely complicated surgery operations, improved medical care and organized evacuation of the wounded. During the Great Patriotic War 1941 -1945, he, being the chief surgeon of the R

Linking spinal cord injury rehabilitation between the World Wars: The R. Tait McKenzie legacy.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) medicine emerged after World War II due to mass casualties, which required specialized treatment centers. This approach to categorical care, however, was first developed during World War I, led by pioneers R. Tait McKenzie and George Deaver, who demonstrated that soldiers disabled by paralysis could return to society through fitness/mobility, recreational and vocational training. McKenzie, a Canadian and the first professor of physical therapy in the US, influenced Deaver and military physicians in Britain, Canada, and the U.S. with his achievements and publications. A

History of military psychology.

Military psychology is a specialist discipline within applied psychology. It entails the application of psychological science to military operations, systems and personnel. The specialty was formally founded during World War I in the UK and the USA, and it was integral to many early concepts and interventions for psychological and neuropsychological trauma. It also established a fundamental basis for the psychological assessment and selection of military personnel. During and after World War II, military psychology continued to make significant contributions to aviation psychology, cognitive t

Plastic Surgery Contributions to the World Wars: Historical Foundations for Modern Craniofacial Techniques.

INTRODUCTION: Plastic surgery played a crucial role during the World Wars. Surgeons dedicated their careers to reconstructing facial injuries and residual deformities incurred during combat. Times of unprecedented trauma led to rapid innovation in plastic surgery, with invaluable impact on practice today. Pioneers such as Harold Gillies are well-known for their work. There are numerous additional contributors who deserve wider recognition. METHODS: A literature review was performed to identify key surgeons who treated soldiers' craniofacial injuries during World Wars I and II. Biographical in

Malaria-Associated Mortality in the Australian Defence Force during the Twentieth Century.

Malaria has been a military problem throughout history capable of causing epidemics that stop military operations. Individual mortality was examined from records of the three major wars of the 20th century that involved Australia in which 133 (1914-1919), 92 (1943-1945), and two (1965-1967) soldiers are known to have died with malaria. Those dying were predominately enlisted soldiers with a mean age of 29 years often complicated by other infections such as influenza, pneumonia or scrub typhus. Lethal epidemics of falciparum malaria occurred in Palestine/Syria in October 1918 and New Guinea in

Two manic-depressives, two tyrants, two world wars.

Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin were tyrants who attained absolute power, and misused it in a gargantuan fashion, leaving in his wake a trail of hatred, devastation and death. All made war on their perceived enemies and on their own countrymen. In "A Brotherhood of Tyrants: Manic Depression and Absolute power" (1994) Amherst, Prometheus Books, D. Jablow Hershman and I expose manic-depressive disorder as the force that drove them to absolute power and the terrible abuse of it. We uncover manic-depressive disorder as a hidden cause of dictatorship, mass killing and war, and s

THE HEALTH SYSTEM OF THE FIRST CZECHOSLOVAK REPUBLIC AND ITS ROLE IN COMBATING CONTAGIOUS DISEASES IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FIRST WORLD WAR (THE 1920s).

A complex epidemiological situation marked the health system at the time of the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic. Reducing the number of infectious diseases was an essential task of the State Administration of Health. It required new legislation and various steps directed at reducing infectious diseases. Serious infectious diseases, such as scarlet fever, diphtheria, typhoid, dysentery, smallpox, and malaria, were among the most significant health problems in Czechoslovakia. In 1920, Act No. 412 Coll. regarding compulsory smallpox vaccination was issued, as well as government Regulat

René Cruchet (1875-1959), beyond encephalitis lethargica.

René Cruchet (1875-1959) was a pediatrician from Bordeaux known for his seminal description of encephalitis lethargica during World War I, at the same time as Constantin von Economo (1876-1931) in Vienna published his own description, which, unlike Cruchet's description, provided precious anatomopathological data in addition to the clinical data. Cruchet was interested in tics and dystonia and called for treatment using behavioral psychotherapy that was, above all, repressive. Cruchet was also a physiologist and an innovator in aeronautic medicine-notably, he helped pioneer the study of "aviat

Changing dogmas: history of development in treatment modalities of traumatic pneumothorax, hemothorax, and posttraumatic empyema thoracis.

Development of treatment modalities for chest wounds and traumatic empyema thoracis is reviewed in the light of war experience. Mortality from thoracic injury was more than 50% before World War I and was about 25% during World War I. It came down to 10% in World War II and was about 5% during the Korean War. It improved further during the Vietnam War, until it ranged at 2% to 4%, where no further improvement could be imagined. Thoracic surgery was born in the field hospitals of World War I. Established drainage methods and standardized anesthesia made thoracotomy a standard procedure in World

News from the Western Front: Guidelines for the excavation of casualties of the First and Second World War (Flanders, Belgium).

In cooperation with many other actors, the Flanders Heritage Agency (Flemish Government) set up a guideline with procedures how to act when human remains are found in the soil of Flanders (the northern part of Belgium). The basic principle is that human remains with an archaeological value always must be excavated by archaeologists and physical anthropologists, according to the Flemish legislation on archaeology. This also applies for casualties of the First and Second World War: excavating using archaeological techniques does not conflict at all with the principles of the Geneva Convention, o

Major General Malcolm C. Grow, M.D. (1887-1960) Soldier, Surgeon, Airman.

World War I (WWI) and World War II (WWII) both presented physicians with challenges unseen before in history. New inventions such as the machine gun and poisonous gas in WWI and the massive aircraft battles in WWII required physicians and surgeons to adapt and innovate to provide the best care and preventative measures for service members. One physician, Malcolm Cummings Grow, distinguished himself as an innovator, a researcher, and a leader. His contributions to the field of military medicine, flight surgery, and medical administration led to countless lives being saved during the two World W

Rudolph Weigl (1883-1957)--a scientist in Poland in wartime plus ratio quam vis.

Rudolph Weigl gained a high estimation for his spectacular invention of the first efficient vaccine against typhus fever. Although born a German native speaker, he changed into a great Pole with Polish education and upbringing in a patriotic atmosphere. His scientific career developed in the Universities of Lvov, Cracow and Poznan. For him, academic employment was a constant exploration of practical truths and a response to human needs, and this remained a deep obligation during his lifetime. His vaccine saved millions, particularly during World War II. Despite many nominations, he was never a

Dr Agnes Savill: Pioneer, polymath and dermatology's renaissance woman.

Dr Agnes Savill was the UK's first female consultant dermatologist with a career journey which was, by any standards, extraordinary. She was awarded her MA in 1893 making her the first female graduate from St Andrews University. She then trained as a doctor in Glasgow in the earliest cohort of women granted the opportunity to study medicine. Following qualification, and during her early professional years, she maintained an involvement in the women's suffrage movement by publicly indicting the government for its brutal treatment of women suffrage prisoners in the 'Votes for Women' campaign. OSTEOPOROSIS FROM YESTERDAY TO TODAY – A NARRATIVE REVIEW.

Despite different lifestyles, humankind has suffered from osteoporosis for thousands of years. A literature review concerning the history of osteoporosis in the following databases: Index Medicus, Medline, PubMed, and PMC Citations was done. In the final analysis, 18 review articles and 31 original papers were included. The works were published during the period 1705-2020. Although there is evidence of the existence of osteoporosis for many centuries, it was first described as a disease at the beginning of the 18th century. It was first perceived as an unavoidable course of aging with no possi

Lost Lessons of the 1918 Influenza: The 1920s Working Hypothesis, the Public Health Paradigm, and the Prevention of Deadly Pandemics.

In standard historical accounts, the hyperlethal 1918 flu pandemic was inevitable once a novel influenza virus appeared. However, in the years following the pandemic, it was obvious to distinguished flu experts from around the world that social and environmental conditions interacted with infectious agents and could enhance the virulence of flu germs. On the basis of the timing and geographic pattern of the pandemic, they hypothesized that an "essential cause" of the pandemic's extraordinary lethality was the extreme, prolonged, and industrial-scale overcrowding of US soldiers in World War I,
