Interaction of wrestling shoe and competition surface: effects on coefficient of friction with implications for injury.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a significant difference in the co-efficient of friction (Fc) between old versus new wrestling shoes and mats and to investigate the effect of perspiration. Fc was measured by dragging a weighted shoe over a wrestling mat surface and measuring the vertical and horizontal forces produced. Three different shoe conditions were assessed over two mat types for both wet and dry conditions for a total of 12 conditions. To simulate the wet condition, saline solution was smeared over the surface of the mat. There was a significant effect of sh

Radiographic and neurobehavioral profile of sports-related concussion associated with scholastic wrestling: a case report.

Sports-related concussions (SRCs) are typically characterized by transient neurologic deficits due to physiologic and metabolic brain injury. However, following an SRC, subsequent insults may lead to severe and permanent injury in the affected brain cells. We present the case of a 15-year-old female scholastic wrestler who developed acute encephalopathy, macroscopic white matter injury on imaging, and chronic behavioral changes from inadequate neuro-recovery after a documented SRC. We also compare her case with established SRC data, demonstrating that wrestling-related concussions and repetiti

Prophylactic valacyclovir to prevent outbreaks of primary herpes gladiatorum at a 28-day wrestling camp.

Herpes gladiatorum (HG) plagues the sport of wrestling, especially in high school wrestlers and summer camps they attend. This study evaluated the usage of valacyclovir to prevent acquisition of primary HG, due to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), in high school wrestlers at a 28-day wrestling camp. At the beginning and end of camp, IgM and IgG anti-HSV-1 antibodies were collected. Out of 332 male wrestlers, aged 13-20, who entered camp, 94 elected to participate in blood sampling. Sixty-four were on antiviral medication. Among the 94 wrestlers, 28 (29.8%) had positive IgG anti-HSV-1 titers

Injury patterns and technique-specific determinants in competitive arm wrestling: implications for performance-oriented rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Arm wrestling is characterized by high torsional and compressive forces acting on the upper limb, predisposing athletes to both acute traumatic and overuse injuries. Despite increasing recognition of injury patterns, quantitative evaluation of technique-specific determinants and their relationship to injury localization remains limited. The aim of the study is to investigate the patterns and mechanisms of upper limb injuries in competitive arm wrestling and to identify technique- and experience-related determinants associated with injury occurrence. METHODS: A cross-sectional obse

Clonal Outbreak of Trichophyton tonsurans Causing Tinea Capitis Among a Wrestling Team in Beijing, China.

Trichophyton tonsurans mostly causes tinea capitis and tinea corporis and often associates with outbreaks among combat sports athletes. Here, we report an outbreak of tinea capitis caused by T. tonsurans among five juvenile athletes in a wrestling team in Beijing, China. Scrapings from the lesions of the five patients were performed by direct microscopic examination and fungal culture. The fungal pathogens were all identified as T. tonsurans by morphology and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. Multilocus genotyping analysis was performed by sequencing of 13 gene loci.

Does the inspiratory muscle warm-up have an acute effect on wrestling recovery performance?

This study aims to investigate the acute effects of inspiratory muscle warm-up (IMW) in young wrestlers. Wrestling is a high-intensity sport that demands anaerobic metabolism, with rapid recovery and endurance playing crucial roles in subsequent performance. Inspiratory muscle warm-up specifically targets the inspiratory muscles, reducing fatigue during exercise and helping to sustain performance. Our study compares three different warm-up protocols (traditional wrestling warm-up, wrestling warm-up (WWIW) +  IMW, and wrestling warm-up +  placebo (WWPL)) to analyse changes in inspiratory muscle

Wrestling-related concussions and closed head injuries predominantly occur in high school age athletes.

BACKGROUND: Sports-related concussions (SRC) and closed head injuries (CHI) have recently garnered national attention given mounting concern for long-term neurological sequelae resulting from repetitive head trauma. Despite historically dangerous techniques in wrestling that involve impacts to the head, there is a paucity of epidemiologic data in regard to wrestling-related concussions (WRCs) in the United States (USA). METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was queried (2000-2018) to report national estimates and demographic characteristics of patients 6

Humeral Fractures Sustained During Arm Wrestling: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis and Review of the Literature.

Arm wrestling places significant torque on the humeral shaft. A spiral distal humeral shaft fracture is an unusual but significant injury that can result. Of 93 patients who presented between 2009 and 2017 with closed humeral shaft fractures that were managed nonoperatively, 9 sustained the fractures while arm wrestling. Outcomes were compared with those of all other patients with nonoperatively managed humeral shaft fractures sustained through other mechanisms. The Student's t test was used to compare cohorts. All patients had spiral fractures that occurred in the distal one-third of the hume

Episodes of injuries and frequent usage of traditional Chinese medicine for Taiwanese elite wrestling athletes.

Wrestling normally places extreme demands on the body and thus may cause various kinds of injuries. An in-depth understanding of the episodes of injured sites, types, timings, and treatment modalities would help participants be aware of wrestling-related injury occurrences so as to develop effective preventive measures. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the gender-specific injuries among elite wrestling athletes. Subjects were selected from the 2009 Taiwanese National Wrestling Sport Championship. Participants were adolescent wrestling athletes, ages 16-18, who must have received at le

Humeral shaft fracture sustained during arm wrestling: report on 30 cases and review of the literature.

Thirty cases of humeral shaft fracture sustained during arm wrestling were analyzed. Twenty eight were men and two were women. Eighteen were fractures of the right arm and 12 were of the left. The patients ranged in age from 15 to 60 years old, averaging 30 years. Although there was no prominent tendency for the injuries to occur at a certain phase of the match, they happened in all cases while full force was being exerted in an effort to win or to change the tide of the contest. All cases were spiral fractures, of which 23% presented with a medial butterfly fragment, and also 23% of which had

Skill Differentiation in Wrestling: Relationship Between Muscle Complexity and Local Dynamic Stability in Neuromuscular Control.

Complexity and local dynamic stability (LDS) of electromyographic (EMG) signals are valuable indicators for understanding motor control mechanisms and distinguishing skill levels in dynamic sports such as wrestling. This study investigates the relationship between complexity and LDS of EMG signals to understand the neuromuscular mechanisms underlying skill differentiation in wrestling. The complexity [using the Higuchi fractal dimension (FD)] and LDS [using the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE)] activity of the upper limb muscles were calculated in elite and sub-elite wrestlers (N = 72) during t
