Reading, writing and erasing mRNA methylation.

RNA methylation to form N6-methyladenosine (m6A) in mRNA accounts for the most abundant mRNA internal modification and has emerged as a widespread regulatory mechanism that controls gene expression in diverse physiological processes. Transcriptome-wide m6A mapping has revealed the distribution and pattern of m6A in cellular RNAs, referred to as the epitranscriptome. These maps have revealed the specific mRNAs that are regulated by m6A, providing mechanistic links connecting m6A to cellular differentiation, cancer progression and other processes. The effects of m6A on mRNA are mediated by an ex

Mirror writing after perimesencephalic subarachnoid haemorrhage.

We report a case of a right-handed Caucasian woman who developed mirror writing following a non-aneurysmal, non-traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage. The patient was unaware of having this phenomenon, and it was detected by clinical staff when the patient was writing a card to a family member. Serial imaging has ruled out a stroke as well as an underlying vascular abnormality. This phenomenon resolved after two months. Whilst there is a body of literature surrounding mirror writing, to our knowledge, this is the first description of mirror writing in the setting of a perimesencephalic subarachno

Thalamic stimulation for primary writing tremor.

We report a patient with primary writing tremor whose tremor was treated with thalamic stimulation. He had undergone trials of multiple oral medications with no benefit for his tremor. An electrode lead was implanted in the thalamic nucleus ventralis intermedius with nearly complete control of his tremor and no postoperative complications. We conclude that nucleus ventralis intermedius thalamic stimulation is safe and effective for primary writing tremor.

Writing tremor after discrete cortical infarction.

BACKGROUND: Hand tremor is a rare manifestation of stroke, and writing tremor has not been reported to be produced by stroke. We describe a patient who developed a unilateral hand tremor mimicking primary writing tremor after discrete cerebral cortical infarction. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 67-year-old man developed mild right hemiparesis. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a discrete cortical infarct in the left frontal area. After recovery of motor power, the patient showed significant right hand tremor exclusively during writing or similar motor activities including tooth brushing or shaving

Representations of grapho-motor patterns unique to Chinese character writing: evidence from a patient with mirror writing.

This study investigated the grapho-motor patterns used in writing Chinese characters. A Chinese patient, CSC, who demonstrated post-brain-injury mirror writing, was recruited. In Experiment 1, non-mirrored writing responses were obtained when CSC was instructed to copy asymmetrical non-verbal symbols and pictures. Resembling the patterns observed in a patient's writing reported in a previous study, it was hypothesized that CSC's mirror writing was a result of untransformed preserved grapho-motor patterns. In Experiments 2 and 3, CSC was further instructed to copy real Chinese characters, pseud

Reclaiming the writing process using AI: a scaffolded writing assignment that promotes critical thinking, reflection, and accountability.

As the educational landscape changes with the widespread use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), we have made the deliberate choice to adapt with intention through the constructive integration of this tool within the curriculum. Writing assignments are often vulnerable to AI shortcuts, and therefore, we reimagined the project in our online microbiology lab to incorporate AI in a structured and pedagogically sound way that prioritizes both the writing process and the final product. Students must work with AI to create a script for a 5-minute video which they then illustrate and record o

Technology-Based Writing-Qualitative Study of the Writing Process When Students With Dyslexia Use Speech-to-Text.

This qualitative study examines the writing processes of four students (aged 10-12) with severe dyslexia in an educational context, using Hayes and Berninger's (2014) writing process model as the theoretical framework. The participants attended a 7-week instructional program focusing on speech-to-text (STT). Their writing processes were examined through screencasts of verbal protocols during writing with reading and writing technology (RWT), with a particular focus on STT. The transcribed screencasts were coded and analysed. Our analysis shows that although no conventional spelling errors were

Assessment of children's writing features: A pilot method study of pen-grip kinetics and writing surface pressure.

The writing process is a complex task involving dexterous manipulation of the writing instrument by the hand digits and biomechanical ergonomic factors that contribute to handwriting efficiency and productivity. We describe a pilot study using an instrumented writing apparatus - a sensor (pen) and a digitized writing surface (tablet) - to measure the pen-grip kinetics (digit forces) and the pen pressure applied to the tablet during a writing task. Eight elementary school students with no handwriting difficulties copied a short story. The mean digit forces on the pen were compared with the mean

"I Knew I Could Write": A Novel Narrative Writing Intervention for Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer.

PURPOSE: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer often experience social and emotional challenges across the illness course. Recent evidence suggests that engagement with narrative writing may have a positive influence on adolescent wellbeing; however, the potential feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact of narrative writing interventions remains under-explored in the AYA cancer patient population. METHODS: This qualitative study aimed to explore AYAs' perceptions of the feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact of a longitudinal narrative writing intervention for AYA

The Insufficiency of Norm-Referenced Writing Assessment for Identifying Writing Weaknesses in Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

PURPOSE: This study examined the internal consistency reliability, interrater reliability, and concurrent validity of the norm-referenced Test of Early Written Language-Third Edition (TEWL-3) to determine if it is an appropriate measure to use when determining if elementary children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) meet grade-level writing expectations. METHOD: Participants included 111 second-grade children across three groups: children with typical hearing (CTH), children who use cochlear implants, and children who use hearing aids. Reliability and validity were compared across all gr

A novel approach for monitoring writing interferences during navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation mappings of writing related cortical areas.

BACKGROUND: It has recently been shown that navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) is useful in preoperative neurosurgical mapping of motor and language brain areas. In TMS mapping of motor cortices the evoked responses can be quantitatively monitored by electromyographic (EMG) recordings. No such setup exists for monitoring of writing during nTMS mappings of writing related cortical areas. NEW METHOD: We present a novel approach for monitoring writing during nTMS mappings of motor writing related cortical areas. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S): To our best knowledg

Investigating the Writing Achievement of Deaf Learners.

This study investigated writing achievement in a Canadian cohort of school-aged deaf learners (N = 64). In the current context, in which most students are educated in inclusive settings and use hearing technologies, the goal was to establish whether outcomes approach those of hearing-age peers and identify demographic factors (e.g., gender, grade, additional disability, home language, hearing loss, hearing technology, auditory perception) influencing performance. Results indicated that a high percentage of participants performed in the average range or higher on a standardized, norm-referenced

A reflection on plasticity research in writing dystonia.

Much attention has focused on the hypothesis that there is enhanced plasticity of sensorimotor circuits in patients with dystonia. A common experimental method to assess plasticity in dystonia research is paired associative stimulation (PAS). Excessive, nonfocal effects of PAS were observed in early studies of dystonia; however, these large effects have not been uniformly replicated. In this viewpoint, data from 15 patients with writing dystonia are presented. We suggest that, as in healthy individuals, the effects of PAS are highly variable. A review of previous studies examining PAS in writi

Writing, Asperger syndrome and theory of mind.

This research compared the written compositions of 16 adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders and 16 neurotypical control participants, and examined the influence of theory of mind on their writing. Participants ranging in age from 17 years to 42 years, matched on Vocabulary subtest scores from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (1997), completed the Social Attribution Task and wrote an expository and a narrative text. Texts were assessed on 18 variables representing quality, mechanics, and length. It was found that adults with HFASD wrote lower quality narrative and exposito
