The number of viral-associated neoplasms reported in wildlife has increased over the last decades, likely because of growing research efforts and a potentially greater burden of carcinogenic pathogens. Herein, we describe a primary gastric T-cell lymphoma in one free-ranging giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus) from Brazilian Pantanal infected by a novel gammaherpesvirus, proposed as Cingulatid gammaherpesvirus 1 (CiHV-1). By chromogenic in situ hybridisation against Epstein-Barr virus some neoplastic cells were labeled. Subsequently, a molecular screening was carried out to detect the occurre

The Xist gene belongs to the class of long noncoding regulatory RNA genes which play a key role in the process of inactivation of one of the X chromosomes in females of placental mammals. Based on interspecific comparative sequence analysis performed using a set ofbioinformatic programs and approaches, the exon-intron gene structure was first described in two species, elephant and armadillo, belonging to the most primitive placental mammal groups, Afrotheria and Xenarthra. Using multiple sequence alignment of the species representing all main groups of placental mammals (12 species), consensus

The enzootic cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi in the nature is maintained for millions of years, in great part by oral route, through the ingestion of infected triatomines by edentates(Xenarthra), marsupials and primates and by carnivores eating other infected mammals. The other phases of the natural history of Chagas disease--Anthropozoonosis, Zoonosis or Anphixenosis and Zooanthroponosis are more recent. The most ancient human mummies found with DNA of T. cruzi by PCR, from northern Chile and southern Peru, dated of 9.000 years and the infection must be acquired from the forest or in the caves as

A review of the literature on the anatomy of the lower female genital tract in therian mammals reveals, contrary to the general perception, a large amount of inter-specific variation. Variation in female external genitalia is anatomically more radical than that in the male genitalia. It includes the absence of whole anatomical units, like the cervix in many Xenarthra, or the absence of the urogenital sinus (UGS), as well as the complete spatial separation of the external clitoral parts from the genital canal (either vagina or UGS). A preliminary phylogenetic analysis shows two patterns. Some m

An anorexic 5-yr-old female giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) developed multifocal ulcerative and vesicular lesions affecting the rostrum, oral cavity, and tongue. Disseminated skin lesions were also found on the body, affecting the feet, flanks, and genital area. Polymerase chain reaction confirmed a systemic viremic orthopoxvirus infection. Cowpox virus was considered to be the only likely etiological agent. Intensive supportive treatment, including daily fluid therapy, force-feeding, and anti-inflammatory administration achieved a successful outcome after 3 wk. To the authors' knowle

Pneumocystis carinii is a eukaryotic organism capable of causing life-threatening pneumonia (PCP) in immunocompromised hosts. Despite intensive investigation in human and laboratory animal hosts, information on the occurrence and nature of infections in wild animals is scarce, although characterisation of infections in wild-animal populations may help to elucidate the life-cycle and transmission of this elusive organism. Due to the interspecific differences in prevalence and intensity of P. carinii infection, and to the antigenic and genetic diversity of P. carinii organisms originating from v

Formation and subsequent break down of ovarian germ cell (GC) cysts is a key and an evolutionary-conserved developmental event, described in phylogenetically diverse species of invertebrates and vertebrates. In mammals, cyst break down (CBD) ends at the time of, or soon after, birth with the formation of primordial follicles enclosing single oocytes, which constitute the sole reservoir of gametes available through the whole female's reproductive life. In this study, we challenge this paradigm demonstrating the constitutive presence of a large number of cysts, enclosing two-thirty GCs, in the o

BACKGROUND: The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is a toothless mammal that feeds mainly on termites and ants. Therefore, like other toothless mammals, this species has morphological and physiological adaptations of the salivary glands related to eating habits. Saliva is essential for the health of the oral cavity, chewing and lubrication of the mouth and it is constituted by an aqueous fluid containing electrolytes, enzymes, and glycoproteins which play an important role in modulating the oral microbiota. The present study investigated the morphology, glycan pattern and the aquaporin

Reproductive management of the southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) should include timed introductions for breeding to minimize aggression and pregnancy monitoring. Since serial blood sampling could cause unnecessary stress, and urinary progesterone metabolites are found in very low concentrations, this study sought to validate progesterone and estradiol enzyme immunoassays for measuring fecal progesterone metabolite (FPM) and fecal estrogen metabolite (FEM) concentrations in two females. Peaks in FEM concentrations coincided with breeding and conception, were 5-6 times higher than baseli

The blood meals of 2,569 phlebotomine sandflies from areas endemic for cutaneous leishmaniasis in the central Amazon of Brazil were tested by the microcapillary precipitin method to determine their vertebrate hosts. The two-toed sloth, Choloepus didactylus, was the predominant host of two incriminated vectors of Leishmania braziliensis guyanensis in the region, Lutzomyia umbratilis and Lu. anduzei (64.0% and 63.6%, respectively). The Lu. "shannoni" group, a complex of several species in which females are indistinguishable, also fed predominantly on sloths (73.0%). Species comprising the Lu. "s

A young male free-ranging giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) was found with paralysis of pelvic limbs on a highway and kept under human care. Radiographs confirmed multiple incomplete fractures in the thoracolumbar vertebrae. Due to the poor prognosis, euthanasia was chosen. The infection was established by viral SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection in the rectal swab, spleen and kidney samples. Immunohistochemistry detected the viral nucleocapsid protein in sections of the lungs, liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and large intestine sections, and spike protein antigen in the lung tissue. Pilosa order spe

The Brazilian savannah-like area, the Cerrado region, covers large areas of the country and provides a habitat for a multitude of different animal species. The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is geographically widespread and one of the typical inhabitants of the Cerrado. They are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. A population loss of at least 30 % over the past 10 years has been estimated based on local extinctions, habitat loss and deaths caused by fires, roadkills and hunting. Little is known about ecological and in par

1. This study attempts to elucidate unique heart and blood pressure responses seen in sloths in response to tilting by blocking autonomics with atropine, propranolol, or a combination of these. 2. Atropine produces less heart rate increase in sloths than in other mammals but blocks reflex bradycardia as expected. 3. Propranolol reduces heart rate to about the same degree as in man and completely blocks all cardiac responses to tilting, both direct and reflex. 4. Atropine slightly diminishes blood pressure responses to tilting whereas propranolol tends to augment the already marked increases.

At varying periods of time following the successful establishment of systemic infections with Mycobacterium leprae or M. lepraemurium in the mouse and the nine-banded armadillo eyes were examined by light microscopy. Inoculation of bacilli was by the intravenous or intraperitoneal route or directly into the hind footpads; eyes were not directly inoculated in this study. During periods of up to 3 years under laboratory conditions no animal showed evidence of impaired vision or blindness, and the external appearance of both eyes was normal. The ocular histopathology and the sites of accumulation

Eight of twenty armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus L.) developed severe lepromatous leprosy 3 to 3.5 years after inoculation with viable Mycobacterium leprae. A total of 988 grams of lepromas containing an estimated 15 to 20 grams of leprosy bacilli has been harvested from these animals. The large amounts of material now available will permit in-depth studies of the biochemistry and metabolism of the leprosy bacillus, and the animal model should make possible definitive studies on the immunology, chemotherapy, and epidemiology of the disease.

Xenarthrans face increasing viral threats from anthropogenic pressures and domestic animals. In this study, we investigated the presence of coronaviruses, paramyxoviruses, and poxviruses in anteaters and armadillos from Brazilian biomes. We screened 236 individuals for these viruses by molecular methods. Canine distemper virus (CDV) was identified in four giant anteaters and one six-banded armadillo. A poxvirus, showing 88% sequence identity to molluscum contagiosum virus, was detected in one giant anteater. No coronaviruses were detected. These findings expand our knowledge on the host range
