The purpose of the study was to define the impact of Zenker's diverticula on voice and potential benefit from repair. Retrospective chart review of prospectively collected data from eleven patients with a Zenker's diverticulum treated surgically in a tertiary care center from November 2014 through January 2016. The voice handicap index-10 (VHI-10) and eating assessment tool-10 (EAT-10) questionnaires were collected as part of pre- and post-operative evaluation, with an average post-operative follow-up of 69 days. Surgical techniques included: trans-oral endoscopic diverticulotomy with laser as

The pharyngeal pouch (Zenker's diverticulum) is a diverticulum of the mucosa of the pharynx, just above the cricopharyngeal muscle (i.e. above the upper sphincter of the oesophagus). It occurs commonly in elderly patients (over 70 year) and the typical symptoms include dysphagia, regurgitation, chronic cough, aspiration and weight loss. We are reporting a case of an oropharyngeal dysphagia due to a Zenker's diverticulum in 75 years old Sudanese man with a chronic history of dysphagia for solids. The pathophysiology of Zenker's diverticulum, clinical presentation, and management are reviewed.

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD), also known as cricopharyngeal, pharyngoesophageal or hypopharyngeal diverticulum, is a rare condition characterized by an acquired outpouching of the mucosal and submucosal layers originating from the pharyngoesophageal junction. This false and pulsion diverticulum occurs dorsally at the pharyngoesophageal wall between the inferior pharyngeal constrictor and the cricopharyngeus muscle. The pathophysiology of ZD involves altered compliance of the cricopharyngeus muscle and raised intrabolus pressure. Decreased compliance of the upper esophageal sphincter and failure

Zenker's diverticulum is the single most common diverticular event arising in the esophagus. Its physiopathology is universally recognized. Lack of coordination between the propulsive pharyngeal contractions and the release of the upper esophageal sphincter creates abnormally high pressure in the pharyngeal chamber, resulting in the collapse of the posterior wall of the hypopharynx, i.e., the Laimer-Killian triangle (or Killian's dehiscence). The mucosal hernia that develops constitutes the diverticulum, which grows in volume and above all in length and is compressed between two rigid structur

The objective of the present study is to determine whether the endoscopic stapling technique for the treatment of Zenker's diverticulum provides a relief of symptoms and an acceptably low number of complications. Previous studies have indicated that endoscopic stapling of the common wall between the oesophagus and the diverticulum is a safe and effective method that has a low complication rate and only necessitates a few days of hospitalization. To the present only a few investigations including a limited number of patients have reported the clinical outcome with regard to relief of symptoms a

We present an endoscopic technique of division of the common wall between the esophagus and the hypopharyngeal (Zenker's) diverticulum. The novelty of the technique, as compared with endoscopic sutureless coagulating methods, consists of stapling the esophageal to the diverticular wall using the Endo-GIA 30 stapler (US Surgical Corp, Norwalk, CT), which protects the neck from any contamination from the digestive lumen and ensures optimal hemostasis of the wound edges. The stapler has been designed such that perforation of the bottom of the diverticulum is not likely. The technique has been app

The authors review the literature about the pathogenesis -still unknown- of Zenker's diverticulum as well as their experience of endoscopic treatment of this disease. From 1964 till 1988, they have treated endoscopically 507 patients, 323 by electrocoagulation, 184 by CO2-laser. The endoscopic procedure is described, consisting in precise division of the tissue bridge between the oesophagus and the diverticulum by micro-endoscopic surgery under general anesthesia. In recent years, the CO2-laser was found preferable, since it may cause less tissue necrosis and consequently less fibrous scar tis

A case is reported of an elderly woman, a resident in a nursing home, who developed dysphagia over a short period. Clinical and radiological examination disclosed that she had a large laryngocele and a moderate sized consideration of her social circumstances, and careful ranking of the medical priorities. Both the laryngocele and the Zenker's diverticulum were excised at a single operation and she was successfully returned to her nursing home environment.

Zenker's diverticulum is a posterolateral pulsion diverticulum arising at Killian's triangle secondary to impaired relaxation of the cricopharyngeal muscle (CPM). Although its prevalence in the general population is estimated at 0.01-0.11 %, it predominantly affects elderly, comorbid patients in whom dysphagia, regurgitation, and aspiration risk translate into a disproportionate burden on quality of life.

Zenker's Diverticulum (ZD) is the most common hypopharyngeal diverticulum; however, it is often underdiagnosed. It results from the herniation of the mucosa and submucosa through Killian's Triangle. Dysphagia is the primary symptom, occurring in 80-90% of cases. The primary goal of treatment is to transect the cricopharyngeal muscle (CM) and connect the ZD cavity to the esophageal lumen. Traditional treatments include surgical open transcervical diverticulectomy and CM septomyotomy, using rigid or flexible endoscopes. However, surgery is burdened by technical difficulties and not negligible ra

BACKGROUND: Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is a rare condition with a reported prevalence of 0.01% to 0.11% in the general population. Endoscopic treatment consists of the division of the septum between the diverticulum and the esophagus, within which the cricopharyngeal muscle is contained. Diathermic monopolar current, argon plasma coagulation, and laser have been used to incise the muscular septum with satisfactory results. The main limitation of endoscopic treatment is the occurrence of complications. Perforation and hemorrhage are reported in as many as 23% and 10% of patients, respectively.

More than 200 years have passed since the pulsion diverticulum of hypopharynx was first described. This paper reviews different opinions on its etiology over the centuries. The German pathologist F.A. von Zenker, who successfully pursued research on a variety of topics, is often associated with this diverticulum through his classical work from 1867 "Krankheiten des Oesophagus", which deals with the pathogenesis and clinical presentations of this herniation of the posterior mucosal wall. Numerous surgical techniques, which have been practised mainly during this century, are also reviewed. Diffe

This report presents 10 patients with Zenker's diverticulum who were evaluated with simultaneous solid-state manometry and fluoroscopy. With this method, intrabolus forces are determined. Each patient had abnormal intrabolus forces regardless of the size of the diverticulum and cricopharyngeal muscle dysfunction. In the literature, there has been conflicting manometry results when studying Zenker's diverticulum. The use of analysis of intrabolus forces increases the sensitivity of manometric evaluation. This study establishes pressure abnormality in the pharyngoesophageal segment of patients w

Zenker's diverticulum is an outpouching of the hypopharyngeal wall through a triangular area of weakness in the inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscle. The current treatment of choice is a one-stage diverticulectomy, with or without a cricopharyngeal myotomy. Closure of the esophagus after diverticulectomy by conventional suturing techniques may be somewhat difficult and time consuming. In the past 2 decades, use of stapling devices has been suggested in four reports, the largest being a series of four patients. We have used the Proximate disposable linear stapler in seven cases of Zenker's di

Background and study aims Z-POEM is now an established therapy for symptomatic Zenker's diverticulum (ZD). Short-term follow-up of up to 1-year post Z-POEM suggests excellent efficacy and safety; however, long-term outcomes are not known. Thus, we sought to report on longer-term outcomes (≥ 2 years) following Z-POEM for treatment of ZD. Patients and methods This was an International multicenter retrospective study at eight institutions across North America, Europe, and Asia over a 5-year period (from December 3, 2015 to March 13, 2020) of patients who underwent Z-POEM for management of ZD wi
