Primary tubercular osteomyelitis of zygoma: A literature review and case report.

PURPOSE: This study presents a rare case of primary tubercular osteomyelitis of the zygoma, and addresses how combined surgical and medical treatments are effective managing rare presentations of tubercular osteomyelitis in facial bones. METHODS: A 57-year-old man presented with pain and purulent discharge from the right malar region following trauma. Initial treatments with empirical antibiotics had poor response, hence further investigations were done. Comprehensive diagnostic workup included lab tests, Computed tomography with contrast, and histopathological examination. The patient underw

Intraosseous venous malformation of the zygoma: Case report and pooled analysis.

The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive summary of the clinical and radiological features of zygomatic intraosseous venous malformations (IVM), as well as its treatment strategies. The aim is to establish preoperative diagnostic bases that will aid in the identification of zygomatic IVM and facilitate the implementation of effective treatment. Four cases of pathologically diagnosed zygomatic IVM with typical clinical and radiological features were reported. They exhibited comparable clinical and radiological features, and the En bloc excision and reconstruction yielded satisf

Zygoma Fractures Are Associated With Increased Morbidity and Mortality in the Pediatric Population.

BACKGROUND: Trauma involving the facial bones has been shown to be associated with high severity in previous studies. Characteristics of facial fractures in adults have been well described in the adult population, less so in the pediatric literature. Our investigation aims to define these epidemiological measures and risk factors for poor outcomes using the most recent data. METHODS: The 2016 Trauma Quality Improvement Program data bank was examined to study facial fracture pattern, mechanism of injury, and demographic descriptive data to characterize pediatric trauma patients. Multivariable

Reduction Malarplasty With Face-Lift for Older Asians With Prominent Zygoma.

BACKGROUND: In Asian culture, overly prominent zygomas are undesirable because they give a masculine and severe appearance. Thus, reduction malarplasty is now becoming one of the most popular procedures among Asian women. However, older patients present sagging facial soft tissue and have high incidence of cheek descent after surgery. To overcome these issues and achieve better cosmetic surgical outcomes, we performed a reduction malarplasty combined with a face-lift to achieve an oval and youthful midface. METHODS: It was a retrospective observational study of 22 older Asian women who compla

Not only "nurture", but also "nature", influence the outcome of zygoma repair.

The present study aims to elucidate the relationship between preoperative deviation patterns of fractured zygomas and treatment outcomes. Forty-five randomly selected patients with tri-pod type zygoma fractures were classified into a medial rotation group and a lateral rotation group, depending on preoperative deviation patterns. A minimum of 6 months after the operation, symmetry of the cheek was evaluated by three plastic surgeons using a VAS system. The evaluated scores were compared between the two groups. Furthermore, simulation of postoperative secondary deformity was performed by applyi

Correction of zygoma and zygomatic arch protrusion in East Asian individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Prominent zygoma is commonly seen in the East Asian population with the clinical characteristics of anteriorly and/or laterally projected zygoma and zygomatic arch resulting in an increased midfacial width. The esthetic surgical modification of zygoma is one of the major aspects of facial-contouring surgery in certain parts of the world. This article aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various surgical methods for reducing the prominent zygoma so as to obtain a harmonious and natural facial contour. METHODS: Surgical approaches, such as zygomatic complex shaving, I-shaped osteoto

Zygoma implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with a maxillary defect.

This clinical report describes the successful management of a patient who underwent extensive resection of a maxillary cancer, by introduction of a maxillary obturator prosthesis using zygoma implants. The patient was a 57-year-old man with cancer of the upper anterior gingiva. The maxillary bone in the affected region had been extensively excised by radical surgery. Owing to loss of teeth retaining the denture, the existing prosthesis was unstable, and the patient experienced severe speech and mastication disorders. Four zygoma implants (two on each side), and two conventional dental implants

The divided zygoma: a meta-analysis of its prevalence with a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Divided zygoma (DZ) is an important structure in the midfacial region. The anatomy of DZ is poorly researched, but knowledge about this entity could be useful during posttraumatic facial reconstructions. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and anatomy of DZ in different regions around the world. Therefore, the authors performed a meta-analysis, including all studies that report extractable data on the DZ. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The main online medical databases such as PubMed, EBSCO, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, SciELO, BIOSIS, Current Content Connect, Korean Jo

[Abscess of the skull base--therapy and reconstruction after zygoma resection].

Abscesses of the base of skull, if not correctly managed, can lead to the intracranial spread of infection - a life-threatening complication. Infection can spread from the upper and lower molar teeth through the retromaxillary area or the parapharyngeal space to reach the temporal, infratemporal or pterygopalatine fossa. Our recommended treatment of abscesses in these fossae is wide abscess incision together with resection of the midsection of the zygomatic arch ("Partsch method"). Two case reports are included. The first report is of a patient with cerebral abscess caused by an oral infection

Successful Reduction of Unilateral Zygoma Fracture Following Bilateral Malar Reduction Surgery.

Malar reduction surgery can increase its susceptibility to fractures in case of trauma. Patients who had malar reduction surgery and sustained a zygoma fracture pose unique challenges for treatment and management. This is a case of a 28-year-old female patient who presented with a unilateral zygoma fracture following bilateral malar reduction and augmentation rhinoplasty 6 years ago. Physical examination revealed a clicking sound when opening the mouth at the right zygomatic buttress and a depressed preauricular area, suggesting arch fracture. Computed tomography imaging demonstrated a loosene

Infraorbital nerve injury associated with zygoma fractures: documentation with neurosensory testing.

Persistent sensibility abnormalities after correction of zygoma fractures indicate injury to the infraorbital nerve and may produce pain. To investigate this, a retrospective study of 25 patients who had undergone surgical correction of a zygoma fracture was performed. Bilateral neurosensory measurements were obtained with the Pressure-Specified Sensory Device (Sensory Management Services, Baltimore, Md.). Seven of the 25 patients had required orbital floor reconstruction. Each patient had undergone fracture correction at least 6 months earlier and was interviewed, at the time of sensibility t

Reduction malarplasty using a simulated surgical guide for asymmetric/prominent zygoma.

BACKGROUND: The present study introduces a reduction malarplasty using a three-dimensional (3D)-printed surgical guide and evaluates the guide's technical applicability. METHODS: Twenty malarplasties were performed for 12 subjects with zygomatic asymmetry/prominency using the current method. 3D reconstruction of the craniomaxillofacial region and fine dental occlusion was made with image data from computed tomograpy and dental scanning. A computer-assisted surgical simulation was performed for reduction malarplasty and a surgical guide was designed for later 3D printing. The manufactured surg

Patient satisfaction after zygoma and mandible reduction surgery: an outcome assessment.

An ovoid and slender face is considered attractive in Oriental culture, and facial bony contouring is frequently performed in Asian countries to achieve this desired facial profile. Despite their popularity, critical analyses of patients' satisfaction after facial-bone contouring surgery is lacking in the current literature. Questionnaires were sent to 90 patients who had undergone zygoma and/or mandibular contouring by a single surgeon at the Craniofacial Center, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. The number of patients who had mandibular angle reduction and zygoma reduction were 78 and 36

Quantitative analysis of the orbital floor defect after zygoma fracture repair.

PURPOSE: Moderate-energy zygoma fractures result frequently in a posteromedially displaced bone fragment. Closed reduction using a force vector directed in an anterolateral direction frequently produces stable repair of these injuries. Exploration of the orbital floor (OF) is not routinely undertaken. However, as the zygoma forms a significant portion of the OF, realignment may create an unrecognized OF defect. Routine OF exploration may be unnecessary and carries the risks of eyelid malposition, scarring, and extraocular muscle injury. Our goal was to quantitatively describe the effect of zyg

Polyfracture and Cranial Injuries Drive the Cost and Inpatient Burden of Zygoma Fractures.

IMPORTANCE: Facial trauma makes up a significant number of emergency room visits, with morbidity costs in excess of 1 billion dollars each year. Few studies have evaluated the economic outcomes of management and inpatient burden of facial trauma, most focusing solely on the mandible and isolated midface fractures. OBJECTIVE: The authors aim to evaluate characteristics associated with increased cost and length of hospitalization of zygoma fracture management. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Level 1-trauma academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with zygoma fractures who pres

'Pillow technique' to improve lip support in the context of zygoma implant rehabilitation.

This study proposes a simple, off-the-shelf ancillary method for application in the dental rehabilitation of severe maxillary atrophy with zygoma implants, allowing simultaneous improvement of lip support in cases with a moderate lack of premaxillary projection. Three consecutive patients with an atrophic maxilla were evaluated retrospectively. All were treated with a fixed rehabilitation over four zygomatic implants and the pillow technique. The study variables included radiological assessment of the premaxilla volume, upper lip and perinasal soft tissue changes, clinical complications, and s

Central hemangioma of Zygoma - A rare case report with CT and MRI features.

Intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon, constituting less than 1% of all osseous tumors. The most frequent sites are the calvaria and the vertebral column. The involvement of the facial bones is rare, and if occurs, it can involve maxilla, mandible, nasal bones and zygomatic bone. Zygomatic hemangioma is a benign, slow-growing tumor occurring mostly in adult women. The radiographic findings are diagnostic. Total excision of the tumor with the primary reconstruction of the defect is the preferred treatment modality. Here, we are reporting a case of a 37-year-old woman who presented with a painle
