Zygomatic bone forms major buttress of the facial skeleton and plays an important role in facial contour. Fractures of zygomatic complex are second most common only next to nasal bone fractures. Motor vehicle accidents and interpersonal violence are common causes. Bilateral fractures of zygomatic complex and zygomatic arch are very rare. We present a case report of isolated fractures involving bilateral zygomatic complex and zygomatic arch with oral submucous fibrosis, which is unique and first of its kind to be reported.

BACKGROUND: In the evaluation of isolated zygomatic arch (ZA) fractures, a standardized guideline for recommending operative intervention is lacking.
PURPOSE: The study purpose was to measure the association between fracture displacement and operative treatment following isolated ZA fractures.
STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: This is a retrospective cohort study identifying adult subjects with isolated ZA fractures presenting to the emergency department between September 2011 and October 2022. Subjects with non-ZA zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures or concurrent facial fractures were exclud

In 1 week two patients with depressed fractures of the malar/orbital/zygomatic complex presented with roentgen evidence of fractures of the underlying coronoid process caused by the transmitted impact of the malar/orbital/zygomatic fragment without direct injury to the mandible. No similar cases had been seen in the previous 12 years, and reports found in the literature stated that this type of fracture occurs in only about 2% of all mandible fractures. Conservative treatment is recommended unless there is obvious displacement.

Falls, assaults, road traffic accidents and sporting injuries are some of the common causes of facial bone fractures. Fractures to the zygomatic complex, or cheekbone, are one of the most common fractures to the facial skeleton. These fractures can be easily missed on assessment and examination and thus left undiagnosed. This can lead to aesthetic deformities to the facial region and, rarely, orbital compartment syndrome due to a retrobulbar haemorrhage or other ocular complications. Emergency department advanced nurse practitioners are usually the clinicians responsible for ensuring that pati

The authors present the case of a 32-year-old patient treated for a left, isolated zygomatic fracture following assault. The injury was reduced without fixation via the Keene approach. The same patient presented to the emergency room 16 months later with a right-sided fracture similar to the previous contralateral injury. This fracture was left untreated. Repeated assaults over a 4-year period provide us with a natural history of both injuries, allowing for comparison between the 2 approaches. The authors found that reduction of the arch without fixation led to an outcome without palpable or v

BACKGROUND: The zygomatic bone constitutes the prominence of the cheek. Fractures of the zygomatic bone are the second most treatment of zygomatic bone fractures and can be examined under two headings, open and closed reductions. This paper describes a new technique in the closed reduction of tripod fractures using a towel clip.
METHODS: Seventeen consecutive patients (three females, 14 males) with a mean age of 35.5 years (range = 18-66 years) with zygomatic tripod fracture were treated using the towel clip technique between December 2011 and February 2014.
RESULTS: Patients were assessed i

BACKGROUND: The Kirschner wire (K-wire) technique allows stable fixation of bone fragments without periosteal dissection, which often lead to bone segment scattering and loss. The authors used the K-wire fixation to simplify the treatment of laborious comminuted zygomatic bone fracture and report outcomes following the operation.
METHODS: A single-institution retrospective review was performed for all patients with comminuted zygomatic bone fractures between January 2010 and December 2013. In each patient, the zygoma was reduced and fixed with K-wire, which was drilled from the cheek bone and

The study aimed to identify factors associated with treatment complications in zygomatic complex fractures (ZCF) through statistical analysis of clinical and radiologic data, providing evidence-based guidance for clinical management. Clinical records, CT scans, and follow-up data of ZCF patients treated between 2013 and 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Key clinical features were extracted based on previous epidemiological studies. Distribution of baseline information, univariate analysis, and multivariate logistic regression were conducted to assess factors associated with treatment complic

Traditionally, surgical management of zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) and orbital fractures occurs within two to three weeks of the injury, followed by an overnight admission to allow for extended eye observations. This is due to the risk of postoperative retrobulbar haemorrhage (RBH) or orbital compartment syndrome (OCS), a rapidly progressive and sight threatening emergency that requires immediate intervention. In September 2016 the oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals redesigned their trauma service with a full-time trauma consultant, a dedicated cl

BACKGROUND: Zygoma is a very crucial component for the anteroposterior positioning of the midface and for the maintenance of facial contours. Zygomatic fractures are considered as the second most common type of facial fractures following nasal fractures. We have developed a new reduction technique called "lever," which is based on the application of lifting force as an alternative to the methods in which the pulling force is applied.
PATIENTS: Over a 12-year period, 90 patients were treated with minimal access approach and 130 patients were treated with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF)

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the epidemiological and operative characteristics of patients undergoing surgery for zygomatic fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between May 2008 and October 2013, a total of 121 patients (98 males, 23 females; mean age 27 years; range, 9 to 63 years) who were operated for zygomatic fractures in our clinic were retrospectively analyzed. Age and sex of the patients, symptoms, fracture and incision sites, length of hospital stay, plate type, treatment options, and complications were recorded.
RESULTS: Assault was the leading cause of trauma (39%), foll

Diagnosis of zygomaticomaxillary fractures is a major problem in radiographic interpretation. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate several radiographic examinations performed in an emergency room to diagnose zygomatic complex (ZC) fractures, in order to determine which is the single best radiographic projection for this purpose. Radiographs of 160 patients with ZC fractures were evaluated retrospectively. The modified P-A projection (10 degrees-20 degrees) provided a clear image of the frontozygomatic, infra-orbital rim and temporozygomatic fracture lines in all cases. In half the

PURPOSE: To describe a new method of zygomatic surface marker navigation to treat delayed unilateral zygomatic fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The computed tomography (CT) data for 6 patients were obtained before surgery and imported into the surgical planning software. After 3-dimensional (3D) construction and segmentation, 3D cylindrical-shaped objects in stereolithographic format were placed in position and merged with the data from the fractured segments to mark the area for surface reduction. Data from the unaffected side were used to guide the reduction data for the segments with marke

BACKGROUND: The study aims to assess the safety and effectiveness of BoneTape™, a new resorbable bone fixation device, using a zygomatic fracture model in rabbits.
METHODS: The study followed BoneTape™ samples and control (sham) groups over 2-, 6-, and 12-week periods post-zygomaticomaxillary (ZM) osteotomy and zygomaticofrontal (ZF) disarticulation. The osteotomized segments were analyzed for bone healing, inflammatory response, and tissue healing. µCT imaging and histological analysis were used to examine the axial alignment, offset, and quality of new bone formation.
RESULTS: BoneTape™ sa

Fractures of the zygoma are relatively frequent and their management has been extensively described. Above all, isolated zygomatic arch fractures comprise about 10% of all zygomatic fractures. Temporal approach is common surgical method, Gillies approach, but it has the limitation of blinded surgical approach. So, the mobile intraoperative fluoroscan is used famously for more suitable reduction, but it needs an additional man to control the machine and increases irradiation doses. The authors got the simple idea, but so helpful tool, and it has been performed since 2012. The authors have gotte

This case describes an injury to a 40-year-old woman, employed as a softball team coach, who presented to an emergency department (ED) after sustaining a line drive hit to the right side of the face with a softball during practice. Upon arrival to the ED, the patient complained of moderate pain, swelling, and bruising over the right side of her midface area. After evaluation in the ED, the patient received a diagnosis of a zygomatic arch fracture that was further managed by an occupational medicine nurse practitioner, a plastic surgeon, and an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physician specialist.

In comminuted fractures of the zygoma open reduction of the malar arch is essential for correct anatomic repair. Avoiding exposure of this landmark may result in severe functional and aesthetic impairment. Exposure of the malar arch necessitated traditionally a coronal incision. However, recently several authors reported good results in malar fracture repair with minimal incisions and endoscopic assistance. To establish this technique a cadaver study was performed. Different approaches to the malar arch, fracture reduction and internal fixation were evaluated. After establishment of a satisfac
