Small doses of endotoxin evoked a dramatic biphasic response of opioid peptide secretion into blood in sheep. The first phase began within minutes and coincided with a brief hypertensive response to endotoxin well before the appearance of fever or hypotension. The ratio of beta-endorphin to beta-lipotropin fell abruptly at the onset of the second phase of release, suggesting early depletion of a pool rich in beta-endorphin and subsequent emergence of a pool rich in unprocessed precursor. A patient with a left lower lung mass had muscle weakness, generalized hyperpigmentation, metabolic alkalosis, and profound hypokalemia. Pituitary adenomas containing adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in one case, and ACTH, beta-lipotropin, and beta-endorphin in the other, were demonstrated in two patients who had amenorrhea-galactorrhea and hyperprolactinemia with no manifestation of Cushing's disease. Neither adenoma contained prolactin (PRL). Initial bromocriptine therapy resulted in cessation of amenorrhea-galactorrhea and normalization of PRL levels. Emetic and antiemetic properties of opioid peptides, substance "P", beta-lipotropin, and ACTH1-39 have been investigated in experiments on cats. It was shown that morphine, enkephalin, beta-endorphin and DADLE caused vomiting in animals, which was blocked by naloxone. Pulmonary cancers produce many hormonal polypeptides. There is a tumor-specific pattern to the appearance of abnormal adrenal function and inappropriate secretion of vasopressin, which are frequently found in small cell undifferentiated carcinoma but occur only very rarely, if at all, in squamous tumors. To elucidate the nature of beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and its relationship with plasma beta-endorphin, plasma and CSF specimens were obtained simultaneously.
