Knockout of hyaluronidase Spam1 reduces age-related bone and cartilage changes in mouse knee.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of Spam1 hyaluronidase in age-related bone and cartilage changes in the mouse knee. DESIGN: Spam1-/- and WT mice were euthanised at different ages from 10 to 52 weeks. The right hindlimbs were dissected, scanned with peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT) and then decalcified for histological analysis (modified Mankin score). In other mice, cartilages of both tibiae were sampled at 10, 30 and 52 weeks of age for RNA extraction and qPCR analysis. We assessed the expression of hyaluronidases Hyal1 and Hyal2, hyaluronan synthase HAS2, extracellular

Medication-related osteonecrosis and osteoradionecrosis of the jaws: Update and current management.

Medication related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) and osteoradionecrosis of the jaws (ORNJ) are two different diseases of quite similar appearance. MRONJ is mainly due to antiresorptive or antiangiogenic drug therapy and ORNJ to radiotherapy. The present work aimed at presenting and comparing the current knowledge on MRONJ and ORNJ. They both present as an exposure of necrotic bone and differ in some clinical or radiological characteristics, clinical course and mostly in treatment. They share similar risk factors. A tooth extraction is more frequently found as a triggering factor in MRONJ.

Legg Calvé Perthes disease in the dog.

Legg Calvé Perthes disease (LCPD) is a developmental abnormality that usually affects young small breed dogs. Although the etiology is still uncertain, the pathogenesis is very similar to that described in humans. Diagnosis with physical examination and medical imaging is relatively easy. Treatments offered in dogs, mainly surgical, are also presented. Legg Calvé Perthes disease has many similarities between children and puppies. Dog is therefore an interesting spontaneous model of aseptic osteonecrosis.

Hibiscus sabdariffa renews pancreatic β-cells in experimental type 1 diabetic model rats.

This study evaluated the antidiabetic potentials of flavonoid-rich aqueous fraction of methanolic extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx (HSCE) on the pancreatic β-cells of experimental type I diabetic model rats. Type 1 diabetes mellitus was induced in Wistar rats by a single intraperitoneal injection of 80mg/kg b/w streptozotocin (STZ) dissolved in 0.1M citrate buffer (pH 6.3). The rats were divided into five groups (n=12) including normal control group, test group I, diabetic negative control, test group II, and diabetic positive control. The test groups received 1.75g/kg b/w of HSCE by gavag

Towards safe and efficient preoperative planning of transcatheter mitral valve interventions.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: Transcatheter mitral valve interventions are emerging as a viable alternative for patients at high risk. Two key aspects are crucial during the preoperative planning: left ventricular outflow tract assessment and anatomical analysis. Given that the manual anatomical analysis is time-consuming, an automated approach may introduce efficiency during preoperative planning. In this study, we present an automatic method to detect the mitral valve annulus and discuss possible implementation of this method in clinical practice. PATIENTS: This retrospective study used the data

Air spaces neighbouring the infraorbital canal.

OBJECTIVE: The infraorbital canal (IOC) courses through the roof of the maxillary sinus (MS). Different grading systems concerning the topography of the IOC have been proposed. Further, it has been suggested that a transantral IOC would be morphologically related to Haller's cells (HCs). However, we hypothesized that this is not necessarily the case. Hence, we aimed to study the anatomical possibilities of the air spaces located medially to the IOC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) files of 40 adult patients were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS: The transant

Unexpected phenotype in a patient with two chromosomal deletions involving 6pter and 22q11.

The 6p terminal deletions are rare and usually early diagnosed because of their association with eye and cranio-facial anomalies, particularly as part of Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome in relation with the haploinsufficiency of FOXC1 gene. Deletions in the 22q11 region are frequent, highly correlated with DiGeorge syndrome also named CATCH22, and may be associated with many clinical features of various severities. We report a 31-year-old man with an unbalanced 45,XY,der(6)t(6;22)(p25;q11.2),-22 karyotype leading to monosomies in both 6p25 and 22q11 regions, confirmed by FISH and array-CGH. The lengt

Variations of the 6th cranial nerve (nervus abducens) in the petroclival region: A microsurgical study.

The aim of this study is to present the variations of nervus abducens in localization and number as it pierces the clival dura mater. The calvaria of 16 cadaveric heads were removed by making horizontal incisions from Glabella to Inion in both sides of the head. The dura mater was dissected. Cerebrum and cerebellum were taken out by obtuse dissection. Dissections of cavernous sinus were made under the stereomicroscope and the findings were photographed. Out of 16 specimens, one of them was excluded. Fifteen heads were bilaterally analyzed. Analysis of these nerves presented four different vari

Hox-A2 protein expression in mouse embryo middle ear ossicles.

The origin of the mammalian middle ear ossicles from mandibular and hyoid pharyngeal arches remains controversial and discussed. Two adverse theories are proposed. The first claims that malleus and incus derive from the Meckel's cartilage of the mandibular arch, and stapes from Reichert's cartilage of the hyoid arch. The second postulates that handle of malleus and long process of the incus are derived from the second arch as well as the stapes. Contradictory analyses support alternatively each theory without any experimental evidence. In order to bring new data, we analyzed by immunohistochem

[Contributions of embryology and comparative anatomy for teaching of cranial nerves].

Some authors propose a global approach, including imaging, to describe cranial nerves from a clinical point of view. If we can agree to a certain extent with this proposal, we consider that the use of a medical point of view can neglect histological and embryological features which contribute to a better understanding of nerve function. For example, it is false to consider totally "nerves" I and II as "sensory cranial nerves". They are not true nerves, but derive manly from direct expansions of the central nervous system. They differ fundamentally from cranial nerves, except for the fibers pre

Update on the cellular and molecular aspects of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) and male fertility.

CFTR protein regulates electrolyte and fluid transport in almost all tissues with exocrine function, including male reproductive tract. Mutation of CFTR gene causes cystic fibrosis (CF), which affects the function of several organs, and impairs male fertility. The role of CFTR protein in different compartments of male reproductive tract (testis, epididymis, sperm) as well as an impact of CFTR mutation(s) on male fertility phenotype is discussed in relation with the choice of optimal technique for Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) management.

Unusual array of neural communications in the infratemporal fossa: Useful for skull base surgery.

Variations in the branching pattern of the mandibular nerve frequently accounts for failure to obtain adequate local anesthesia in routine oral and dental procedures, and also for unexpected injury to the nerves during surgery. The knowledge of the neurovascular relationships of the infratemporal region is relevant in odontostomatology practice. In this article we present a rare case of atypical communication between the inferior alveolar nerve and lingual nerve and the mylohyoid and lingual nerves. Further, the clinical implications of these communications on the development of the supplement

A cadaveric study of variations of external iliac artery and its implication in trauma and radiology.

OBJECTIVES: A severe and potentially lethal complication in pelvic injuries is arterial bleeding commonly involving the iliac arteries. Hence, the objective of our study was to systematically document the morphology and variations of the external iliac artery in human cadaveric pelvises. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study was conducted on 48 pelvic halves which were obtained by making mid-line saw cuts through formalin embalmed adult human male cadaveric pelvises. The external iliac artery was cleaned, its length and diameter were measured using a scale. Following parameters were noted: variations

The round ligament of the uterus: Questioning its distal insertion.

PURPOSE: Classically, the round ligament of the uterus (RLU) attaches distally in the ipsilateral labia majora. This attachment has rarely been described in adults. That is why we have performed an anatomical study focused on this distal ending. PATIENTS: We performed in 2015 the cadaveric dissection of 19 RLU. METHODS: In all cases, the RLU was individualized on its entire length from its uterine origin to the inguinal canal. Then this canal was open from its internal orifice to its external orifice. We described the distal attachment of the RLU according four areas: before the internal ing

Rare anatomic variation: Giant unilateral concha bullosa superior.

The lateral nasal wall attaches the nasal turbinates, which could be, either pneumatized, or paradoxically curved. The turbinate pneumatization-concha bullosausually indicates the pneumatization of the middle turbinate. However, concha bullosasuperior (CBS) is also, although rare, anatomic possibility of variation. We report here a case of unilateral giant septated CBS, which was not, to our knowledge, previously reported. The case was documented in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Subtle pneumatizations of inferior turbinates were found bilateral, as also were the middle conchae bullosae
