New Species of Rhabdosynochus Mizelle and Blatz 1941 (Monogenoidea: Diplectanidae) From the Gills of the Cultured Centropomus viridis (Perciformes) in the Mexican Eastern Tropical Pacific.

PURPOSE: There are currently nine monogenoidean species of Rhabdosynochus infecting the gill lamellae of wild and cultured centropomid fishes from tropical and subtropical waters of the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific Oceans. The purpose of the present study was to describe the morphological distinctiveness of two new species of Rhabdosynochus found on the cultured Centropomus viridis collected from floating cages from the Mexican eastern Tropical Pacific in 2018. METHODS: monogenoideans were fixed with 4-5% formalin solution, observed and measured as temporary or permanent mounts staine

Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in South Atlantic Cetaceans over a Decade of Surveillance.

This decade-long surveillance study (2016-2025) investigates the acquisition of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in South Atlantic cetaceans to evaluate how ecological niches modulate exposure to biological pollution. Analyzing clinical isolates from stranded cetacean carcasses (n = 346), we used Generalized Linear Mixed-Effects Models (GLMMs) to mitigate multi-center analytical biases and compare resistance profiles across coastal and oceanic species. We observed a significant, progressive upward trend in the overall MDR probability over the decade. Although raw MDR was higher in the demers

Unravelling the anthropogenic pressures in deep waters of the N Iberian Peninsula in the last centuries through the study of sediment cores.

The greatest degradation of marine ecosystems has occurred in the last two centuries, coinciding with changes in economic and production models such as the industrialisation. We reconstructed the recent history (last centuries) of marine pollutants (metals and microplastics) in the deep sea of the NW Mediterranean and the Cantabrian Sea (NE Atlantic), analysing 8 sites (cores) at depths between 87 and 1151 m with different levels of terrestrial/oceanic influence. The 210Pb dating showed higher sedimentation rates (MAR) in the upper slope and/or closer to the mainland (0.063-0.078 g/cm2/yr off

Reproductive Science Methods for Wild, Fully-Marine Mammals: Current Approaches and Future Applications.

Determining reproductive rates of marine mammal populations can give insight into their persistence and resilience in changing environments. As our marine environments continue to degrade along developed coastal fringes and as mankind's influences extend across even our widest oceans, there is a concern that the reproductive functioning of marine mammals may be affected adversely. Since many marine mammal species and populations are still in the recovery phase post-commercial harvest, and yet others are endangered or threatened by ongoing pressures, further environmental changes may represent

Surveillance of Ixodes ricinus ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in Iceland.

BACKGROUND: Ixodes ricinus is a three-host tick, a principal vector of Borrelia burgdorferi (s.l.) and one of the main vectors of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus. Iceland is located in the North Atlantic Ocean with subpolar oceanic climate. During the past 3-4 decades, average temperature has increased, supporting more favourable conditions for ticks. Reports of I. ricinus have increased in recent years. If these ticks were able to establish in a changing climate, Iceland may face new threats posed by tick-borne diseases. METHODS: Active field surveillance by tick flagging was conducted a

Mortality caused by tropical cyclones in the United States.

Natural disasters trigger complex chains of events within human societies1. Immediate deaths and damage are directly observed after a disaster and are widely studied, but delayed downstream outcomes, indirectly caused by the disaster, are difficult to trace back to the initial event1,2. Tropical cyclones (TCs)-that is, hurricanes and tropical storms-are widespread globally and have lasting economic impacts3-5, but their full health impact remains unknown. Here we conduct a large-scale evaluation of long-term effects of TCs on human mortality in the contiguous United States (CONUS) for all TCs

Are known cyanotoxins involved in the toxicity of picoplanktonic and filamentous North Atlantic marine cyanobacteria?

Eight marine cyanobacteria strains of the genera Cyanobium, Leptolyngbya, Oscillatoria, Phormidium, and Synechococcus were isolated from rocky beaches along the Atlantic Portuguese central coast and tested for ecotoxicity. Strains were identified by morphological characteristics and by the amplification and sequentiation of the 16S rDNA. Bioactivity of dichloromethane, methanol and aqueous extracts was assessed by the Artemia salina bioassay. Peptide toxin production was screened by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. Molecular analysis of the genes in

Identifying potential nutrient acquisition mechanisms for long-term survival: adaptive evolution of Halomonas isolated from subseafloor crustal fluids.

In nature, microbes must often survive for long periods of time under conditions of nutrient and carbon limitation while also facing extremes in temperature, pressure, and competition with other microbes. One low-carbon, cold, and high pressure environment is the subseafloor crustal aquifer, where fluids circulate through old ocean crust. While microbial communities are known to be present in these fluids and contribute to biogeochemical cycling, the survival strategies of microbes in these communities is poorly constrained. In this study, multiple Halomonas strains were isolated from subseafl

Polar cod early life stage exposure to potential oil spills in the Arctic.

Arctic amplification of climate change is causing sea ice to retreat at unprecedented rates, potentially opening up large vulnerable Arctic areas for oil and gas exploration and new shipping routes. This rapid warming marginalizes sympagic species habitats making them more sensitive to other anthropogenic pressures. Here, we assess potential impacts of hypothetic oil spills from the northernmost licensed oil field Wisting and additional neighbouring spill sites in areas currently not open to oil exploitation on the key ice-associated Arctic fish species polar cod (Boreogadus saida). We do this

Is the diel cycle of routine metabolic rate in mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) affected by near-infrared lighting used for visualizing behavior of fishes at night?

The metabolic rate of a freely moving fish (routine metabolic rate) is tightly coupled with volitional movement (spontaneous activity), both of which commonly show strong daily cycles linked to the species-specific diel activity pattern. Mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus), an important estuarine fish in the north western Atlantic Ocean, are historically reported as diurnal (i.e., more active during daylight). Our recent laboratory studies on a Bay of Fundy population, however, showed a free-running (i.e., similarly active daytime and night-time) or even nocturnal (i.e., more active at night-tim

Signature of an early genetic bottleneck in a population of Moroccan sardines (Sardina pilchardus).

Fishery assessment models meant to determine sustainability of commercial marine fish failed to predict recent stock collapses due to overexploitation. One flaw of assessment models is that they strongly rely on catch and age-composition statistics, but largely ignore the genetic background of the studied populations. We examined population genetic structure of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in the centraleastern and northeastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea to aid fishery management of this heavily fished small pelagic species. We found that sardine has a striking mitochondrial control

Radiological impact assessment of hypothetical accident scenarios for an advanced PWR at the Sidi Boulbra candidate nuclear site, Morocco.

Radiological consequence assessment is essential for evaluating emergency preparedness at nuclear power sites, especially where plant-specific licensing data are not yet available. In Morocco, Sidi Boulbra was historically retained as a candidate nuclear power plant site; however, site-specific screening assessments of hypothetical large advanced pressurized water reactor (PWR) accident consequences using long-term local meteorology remain limited. Therefore, this study evaluates two hypothetical accident scenarios using a literature-based representative large advanced PWR source term applied

Wide-spread dispersal in a deep-sea brooding polychaete: the role of natural history collections in assessing the distribution in quill worms (Onuphidae, Annelida).

BACKGROUND: Modern integrative taxonomy-based annelid species descriptions are detailed combining morphological data and, since the last decades, also molecular information. Historic species descriptions are often comparatively brief lacking such detail. Adoptions of species names from western literature in the past led to the assumption of cosmopolitan ranges for many species, which, in many cases, were later found to include cryptic or pseudocryptic lineages with subtle morphological differences. Natural history collections and databases can aid in assessing the geographic ranges of species

Mercury contamination and potential health risks to Arctic seabirds and shorebirds.

Since the last Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) effort to review biological effects of mercury (Hg) on Arctic biota in 2011 and 2018, there has been a considerable number of new Arctic bird studies. This review article provides contemporary Hg exposure and potential health risk for 36 Arctic seabird and shorebird species, representing a larger portion of the Arctic than during previous AMAP assessments now also including parts of the Russian Arctic. To assess risk to birds, we used Hg toxicity benchmarks established for blood and converted to egg, liver, and feather tissues. S

Metal resistance genes enrichment in marine biofilm communities selected by biocide-containing surfaces in temperate and tropical coastal environments.

Microorganisms able to form biofilms in marine ecosystems are selected depending on immersed surfaces and environmental conditions. Cell attachment directly on toxic surfaces like antifouling coatings suggests a selection of tolerant (or resistant) organisms with characteristics conferring adaptive advantages. We investigated if environment would drive metal resistance gene abundance in biofilms on artificial surfaces. Biofilms were sampled from three surfaces (a PVC reference and two antifouling coatings) deployed in three coastal waters with dissimilar characteristics: The Mediterranean Sea

Methylmercury effects on migratory behaviour in glass eels (Anguilla anguilla): an experimental study using isotopic tracers.

The effect of methylmercury (MeHg) on glass eels' propensity to migrate, mitochondrial activity and antioxidative defence systems was investigated. Marine glass eels were first sorted in an experimental flume according to their response to dusk. Fish responding to the decrease in light intensity by ascending in the water column and moving with or against the flow were considered as having a high propensity to migrate (migrant). Glass eels still sheltering at the end of the 24 h catching period were considered as having a low propensity to migrate and were called non-migrant. Migrant and non-mi

Using Plasma Vitellogenin in Loggerhead Sea Turtles to Assess Reproductive Maturation and Estrogen-Like Contaminant Exposure.

Vitellogenin (VTG), an egg yolk precursor, is abnormally produced by male and juvenile oviparous species after exposure to estrogens. Plasma VTG in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) helped us understand their reproductive maturation and investigate it as a biomarker of contaminant exposure. The presence of VTG was screened in plasma from 404 loggerheads from the northwestern Atlantic Ocean using a freshwater turtle antibody in western blots. The concentrations of VTG were semiquantified using band intensities calibrated to results from a loggerhead antibody enzyme-linked immunoassay. Th
