This study investigated the effects of arginine, with/without sodium fluoride (NaF), on mature oral microcosm biofilms and enamel calcium loss (ECL). Saliva-derived biofilms grown on bovine enamel for three days were subsequently assigned to their respective test groups and cultured until day seven (n = 9/group). Biofilm parameters and ECL were assessed. Reductions in the number of lactobacilli were observed with arginine at 2.5%/8% concentrations, with/without NaF, while 8% arginine, with/without NaF, reduced the number of all microorganism groups. The addition of 8% arginine and combinations

Biofilms are a virulence factor for Candida albicans, a common pathogen in human fungal infections, making them resistant to many commercial antifungals. Therefore, the discovery of compounds that inhibit and eradicate biofilms is a priority. As thiosemicarbazones have had their effect on Candida biofilms little explored, this study investigated the inhibitory and eradication activity of 30 thiosemicarbazones and analogues against C. albicans biofilms. After initial screening, four compounds were selected and compound 28 emerged as the most potent with BIC50 at 31.55 ± 1.18 µM. By scanning ele

Strategies focusing on natural compounds and nanotechnology have been explored to overcome the limitations of conventional therapies in managing Candida infections. In this context, metal nanoparticles, both non-functionalised and combined with gallic acid, may offer a promising alternative. This study investigated the effects of gold nanoparticles non-functionalised (AuNp) and associated with gallic acid (AuNpGA) against planktonic cells and biofilms of Nakaseomyces glabratus, Pichia kudriavzevii, Candida parapsilosis, and Candida tropicalis. Both AuNp and AuNpGA inhibited the growth of all s

The emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens linked to mixed biofilm infections is a significant concern due to limited therapeutic options. This health risk has renewed interest in developing new antibiofilm alternatives. In this study, the antibiofilm potential of a phosphonium-based ionic liquid against a mixed-species biofilm of Candida albicans and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus haemolyticus (MRSH) was assessed preliminarily using the microbroth dilution assay. The ionic liquid inhibitory profiles were further explored by confocal Raman mapping, scanning electron microscopy (SEM),

Although Streptococcus pyogenes and Candida albicans may colonize tonsillar tissues, the interaction between them in mixed biofilms has been poorly explored. This study established an interkingdom biofilm model of S. pyogenes and C. albicans and verified the dose-response validation of antimicrobials. Biofilms were formed on microplates, in the presence or absence of a conditioning layer of human saliva, using Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth or artificial saliva (AS) as a culture medium, and with variations in the microorganism inoculation sequence. Biofilms grown in AS showed higher mass tha

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are exacerbated by bacterial colonisation. Here, a high prevalence of Enterococcus faecalis was observed in DFU patients from an Argentinean hospital. E. faecalis was frequently co-isolated with Escherichia coli, Morganella morganii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The effect of interspecies interactions on bacterial growth was investigated in mixed-species macrocolony biofilms developed in Lubbock-Glc-agar. Similar cell counts were found for E. faecalis and M. morganii growing in mixed and single-species biofilms. An E. faecalis strain showed 1 Log higher cell counts in
