Patients cured from craniopharyngioma or nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma (NFMA) suffer similarly from increased daytime somnolence despite normal sleep patterns compared to healthy controls.

OBJECTIVE: Adults patients previously treated for craniopharyngioma have increased general and physical fatigue compared to healthy controls. This could be related to disturbed sleep patterns. The aim of this study was to compare sleepiness and sleep patterns in those patients to healthy controls and to patients treated for nonfunctioning macroadenomas (NFMA) of the pituitary. DESIGN: Case-control study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sleepiness and sleep patterns were assessed in 27 adult patients [14 men, 8 patients diagnosed at childhood age, mean age of 53 years (range 27-80 year)] after long-ter

Associations Between Sleep Traits and Risk of Suicide Attempt: Insight from A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related traits were associated with the risk of suicide attempt (SA) in observational epidemiological studies. However, little is known regarding the causal associations between them. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the potential causal associations between sleep traits and risk of SA using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) design. METHODS: Genetic instruments robustly associated with sleep traits were selected from corresponding genome-wide association studies. Summary statistics for SA were obtained from the FinnGen consortium and the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC)

Correlates of weekday sleep duration before and during the COVID-19 lockdown: Evidence from two Austrian national surveys from 2017 and 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly disrupted daily life, including sleep behaviour. While several international studies report longer sleep durations during lockdown, most relied on convenience samples and only few influencing factors were considered. The aim of this study was to identify correlates of weekday sleep duration before and during Austria's first lockdown using two population-based cross-sectional surveys. Data were drawn from online surveys in September 2017 (n = 784) and May 2020 (n = 847), weighted to match the Austrian adult population by age and sex. Weekday sleep duration was d

Adolescent circadian sleep health: a review of multimodal assessment strategies and clinical implications.

The adolescent developmental period is marked by increased social and academic demands, as well as biological changes that lead to profound shifts in sleep and circadian timing. Circadian misalignment, short sleep duration, and irregular sleep patterns are prevalent among adolescents and are linked to a wide range of negative outcomes, including impaired emotional regulation, diminished academic performance, and increased cardiometabolic disease risk. While efforts to promote adolescent sleep health have grown, the multidimensional nature of circadian sleep health remains underassessed in both

The Interactions Between Circadian Rhythm, Gut Microbiota, and Anxiety: From Mechanisms to Intervention Strategies.

The circadian rhythm is an internal timing system formed by the body's adaptation to the Earth's rotation, which helps maintain homeostasis by regulating physiological, metabolic, and behavioral activities. The gut microbiota (GM), the largest microbial ecosystem in the human body, exhibits a bidirectional regulatory relationship with the host circadian clock. Emerging evidence indicates that circadian rhythm disruption (CRD) is linked to disturbances in the diurnal oscillations and compositional balance of the GM, accompanied by reduced short-chain fatty acid levels, increased lipopolysacchar

The Gastro-Circadian Metabolic Axis: A Comprehensive Framework for Chronotherapy in Gastroenterology.

Circadian rhythms exert fundamental control over gastrointestinal and metabolic physiology, governing 24-hour patterns of motility, secretion, nutrient absorption, microbial activity, immune regulation, and hepatic metabolism. Accumulating evidence indicates that the gastrointestinal tract is not an isolated system but is tightly integrated with systemic metabolic and neuroendocrine networks, forming a coordinated gastro-circadian metabolic axis (GCMA). This axis links molecular clocks in the gut, liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle with rhythmic inputs from the gut microbiome, feeding-

Suicide and Sleep Disorders: The Role of Insomnia, Nightmares, and Circadian Disruption.

Suicide remains a leading global cause of preventable mortality, with sleep disturbances, particularly insomnia, nightmares, and circadian disruption, emerging as critical yet underrecognized contributors to suicidal ideation and behavior. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the multifaceted links between sleep disorders and suicidality, integrating findings from epidemiological, neurobiological, and interventional studies. Insomnia contributes to suicide risk through pathways of hyperarousal, hopelessness, and impaired emotion regulation, while nightmares are associated with

Maternal sleep trajectories from preconception to postpartum in a population-based cohort: The Generation R next study.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep is known to change around pregnancy. Yet current studies often do not take into account the multidimensionality of sleep and its changes from preconception to postpartum. Therefore, this study aims to explore maternal multivariate sleep trajectory from preconception to 6 months postpartum and related determinants. METHODS: We included 556 women of the Generation R Next Study with sleep measurements between preconception and postpartum at ≥2 time points, and 850 women with sleep measurements at ≥2 time points from pregnancy onwards. Sleep duration, sleep midpoint, sleep laten

Chrononutrition in Gestational Diabetes: Toward Precision Timing in Maternal Care.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a heterogeneous disorder that compromises maternal and offspring health. Conventional medical nutrition therapy focuses on nutrient composition and caloric targets but largely omits timing and individualized biology. This narrative review synthesizes mechanistic, epidemiologic and interventional evidence linking circadian biology and meal timing (chrononutrition) to maternal glycemic control. Observational cohorts associate late eating and breakfast skipping with worse glycemia, while pilot interventions and CGM-based studies indicate that front-loading c

Late Bedtime and Altered Diurnal Axial Length Rhythms of the Eye.

PURPOSE: Affecting one-third of the population worldwide and increasing, the sight-threatening condition myopia is causing a significant socio-economic burden. To better understand its etiology, recent studies investigated the role of ocular and systemic rhythms, yet results are conflicting. Here we profiled 24-h variations of axial length of the eye and salivary melatonin concentration in young adults with and without myopia and explored the potential impacts of bedtime on these rhythms. METHODS: A total of 25 healthy young adults (age 25.0 ± 4.8 years, 13 females) completed this study, incl

Association between commuting and mental health among Japanese adolescents.

AIM: Mental health issues in adolescence contribute to various disease burdens later in life and are associated with violence, crime, and suicide. Activities such as sleep, diet, exercise, and time spent using electronic devices are related to declining mental health. However, few studies have examined the association between commuting times to school and mental health. This study tested the hypothesis that high school students' long commuting times are associated with poor mental health. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted between October and December 2022 among 2067 students at tw

No evidence linking sleep traits with white blood cell counts: Multivariable-adjusted and Mendelian randomization analyses.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances in habitual sleep have been associated with multiple age-associated diseases. However, the biological mechanisms underpinning these associations remain largely unclear. We assessed the possible involvement of the circulating immune system by determining the associations between sleep traits and white blood cell counts using multivariable-adjusted linear regression and Mendelian randomization. METHODS: Cross-sectional multivariable-adjusted linear regression analyses were done using participants within the normal range of total white blood cell counts (>4.5 × 109 and <

Night shift-induced circadian disruption: links to initiation of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and risk of hepatic cancer.

The circadian system plays a crucial role in regulating metabolic homeostasis at both systemic and tissue levels by synchronizing the central and peripheral clocks with exogenous time cues, known as zeitgebers (such as the light/dark cycle). Our body's behavioral rhythms, including sleep-wake cycles and feeding-fasting patterns, align with these extrinsic time cues. The body cannot effectively rest and repair itself when circadian rhythms are frequently disrupted. In many shift workers, the internal rhythms fail to fully synchronize with the end and start times of their shifts. Additionally, e

Validation and performance of the sleep inertia questionnaire in central disorders of hypersomnolence.

BACKGROUND: Optimal measurement tools for problematic sleep inertia, common in some central disorders of hypersomnolence (CDH), have not yet been determined. We evaluated the performance of the Sleep Inertia Questionnaire (SIQ) in CDH, and how well it distinguished hypersomnolent groups from controls, and IH (idiopathic hypersomnia) from narcolepsy type 1 (NT1). METHODS: This prospective, bi-centric study included 63 control, 84 IH, 16 NT1, 18 narcolepsy type 2 (NT2), and 88 subjective excessive daytime sleepiness (sEDS) participants, using ICSD-3 criteria. 126 (47.2 %) participants were on a
