Characterization of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) DRB exon 2 and DRA exon 3 fragments in a primary terrestrial rabies vector (Procyon lotor).

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) presents a unique system to explore links between genetic diversity and pathogens, as diversity within MHC is maintained in part by pathogen driven selection. While the majority of wildlife MHC studies have investigated species that are of conservation concern, here we characterize MHC variation in a common and broadly distributed species, the North American raccoon (Procyon lotor). Raccoons host an array of broadly distributed wildlife diseases (e.g., canine distemper, parvovirus and raccoon rabies virus) and present important human health risks as t

The golden jackal (Canis aureus): interaction of fur and fecal microbiota, host genetics and animal traits.

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is a medium-sized canid widely distributed across Europe and the Mediterranean region. As a synanthropic species, it often inhabits areas near human settlements and is associated with zoonotic diseases such as rabies. This study characterizes the golden jackal’s fur microbiota and examines its interactions with host traits, fecal microbiota, host genetics and environmental factors. Analysis of the 16S rRNA amplicons indicated that the golden jackal fur microbiota is dominated by four bacteria phyla (Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidota)

Post-mortem findings in southern right whales Eubalaena australis at Península Valdés, Argentina, 2003-2012.

Between 2003 and 2012, 605 southern right whales (SRW; Eubalaena australis) were found dead along the shores of Península Valdés (PV), Argentina. These deaths included alarmingly high annual losses between 2007 and 2012, a peak number of deaths (116) in 2012, and a significant number of deaths across years in calves-of-the-year (544 of 605 [89.9%]; average = 60.4 yr(-1)). Post-mortem examination and pathogen testing were performed on 212 whales; 208 (98.1%) were calves-of-the-year and 48.0% of these were newborns or neonates. A known or probable cause of death was established in only a small n

Sequence analysis of the phosphoprotein (P) genes of human parainfluenza type 4A and 4B viruses and RNA editing at transcript of the P genes: the number of G residues added is imprecise.

We cloned and sequenced the cDNAs against genomic RNAs and mRNAs for phosphoproteins (Ps) of human parainfluenza virus types 4A (PIV-4A) and 4B (PIV-4B). The PIV-4A and -4B P genes were 1535 nucleotides including poly(A) tract and were found to have two small open reading frames, neither of which was apparently large enough to encode the P protein. A cluster of G residues was found in genomic RNA and the number of G residues was 6 in both PIV-4A and -4B. However, the number of G residues at the corresponding site in the mRNAs to the genomic RNA was not constant. Three different mRNA cDNA clone

Detection of pathogens in dogs with respiratory disease during winter 2023-2024 using multiplex qPCR/RT-qPCR assays and next-generation sequencing.

Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), caused by a diverse range of viral and bacterial pathogens, is the leading cause of respiratory illness in dogs. In the winter of 2023-2024, the United States experienced a noticeable increase in cases consistent with CIRDC. This study investigated the potential association of emerging pathogens with CIRDC cases. It involved the analysis of 50 clinical specimens collected from CIRDC-suspected dogs from six US states between December 2023 and February 2024. All clinical cases presented with respiratory illness characterized mainly by coughi

Post-epizootic chronic dolphin morbillivirus infection in Mediterranean striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba.

Dolphin morbillivirus (DMV) has caused 2 epizootics with high mortality rates on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, in 1990 and 2006-07, mainly affecting striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba. Following the first epizootic unusual DMV infections affecting only the central nervous system of striped dolphins were found, with histological features similar to subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and old dog encephalitis, the chronic latent localised infections caused by defective forms of measles virus and canine distemper virus, respectively. Between 2008 and 2010, monitoring by microscopic and imm

Automated highly multiplex detection system for respiratory pathogens in canines.

INTRODUCTION: Canine infectious respiratory diseases (CIRDs) are prevalent causes of respiratory illnesses in dogs. Clinical signs are non-specific, including coughing, rhinorrhea, and fever, making it challenging for veterinarians, especially at the onset of symptoms, to identify the causative pathogens based on clinical presentation alone. On the other hand, early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for preventing progression to severe complications such as pneumonia and widespread outbreaks. The ability to differentiate between viral and bacterial etiologies can guide appropriate treatment an

Pathogenesis of wild-type- and vaccine-based recombinant peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) expressing EGFP in experimentally infected domestic goats.

Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) is a highly contagious morbillivirus related to measles and canine distemper virus, mostly affecting small ruminants. The corresponding PPR disease has a high clinical impact in goats and is characterized by fever, oral and nasal erosions, diarrhoea and pneumonia. In addition, massive infection of lymphoid tissues causes lymphopaenia and immune suppression. This results in increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infections, explaining the observed high mortality in some outbreaks. We studied the pathogenesis of PPR by experimental inoculation of

Serosurveillance and Parasite Survey of Swift Fox (Vulpes velox) from Southeastern Wyoming, USA.

The swift fox (Vulpes velox) is a small canid species occupying mixed and short-grass prairie ecosystems across western North America. Populations have declined across a large portion of their historical habitat distribution, mainly due to anthropogenic influences. Although some populations appear to be rebounding, the swift fox is classified as a species of greatest conservation need in Wyoming, USA, due to threats from predation, vehicular collisions, and habitat alterations that increase potential contact with humans and domestic animals. This potential contact with other species puts swift
