Size-controlled hydroxyapatite nanoparticles as self-organized organic-inorganic composite materials.

This paper presents some results concerning the size-controlled hydroxyapatite nanoparticles obtained in aqueous media in a biopolymer matrix from soluble precursors salts. Taking the inspiration from nature, where composite materials made of a polymer matrix and inorganic fillers are often found, e.g. bone, shell of crustaceans, shell of eggs, etc., the feasibility on making composite materials containing chitosan and nanosized hydroxyapatite was investigated. A stepwise co-precipitation approach was used to obtain different types of composites by means of different ratio between components.

[A rare case of Hymenolepis diminuta infection in a small child].

Unlike Hymenolepis nana that transmits directly from person to person, the transmission of Hymenolepis diminuta to human is via accidentally ingesting of arthropods carrying cysticercoid larvae as intermediate host. In places with poor hygienic conditions, this cestod may cause seldom infections especially in children. Studies carried out on various populations have reported the prevalence rate of H.diminuta between 0.001% and 5.5%. Although the reported cases are mostly children, the disease can be seen in every age group. In this report, a pediatric case of H.diminuta infection is presented.

Effects of T-2 toxin on reproductive performance and health of laying hens.

Purified T-2 toxin was fed to S.C.W.L. hens at levels of 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 p.p.m. of an otherwise balanced diet. Feed consumption, egg production and shell thickness were significantly (P less than 0.05) decreased in hens fed 8 p.p.m. as compared with control hens. The fertility and progeny performance were not depressed by feeding T-2 toxin, but the hatchability of fertile eggs of hens fed 2 and 8 p.p.m. was significantly (P less than 0.05) lower than that of hens fed the control diet. The weights of liver, heart, gizzard and spleen were not influenced by T-2 toxin. Seru

Escherichia coli isolates from commercial chicken meat and eggs cause sepsis, meningitis and urinary tract infection in rodent models of human infections.

The zoonotic potential of Escherichia coli from chicken-source food products is important to define for public health purposes. Previously, genotypic and phenotypic screening of E. coli isolates from commercial chicken meat and shell eggs identified some E. coli strains that by molecular criteria resembled human-source extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). Here, to clarify the zoonotic risk of such chicken-source E. coli, we compared selected E. coli isolates from chicken meat and eggs, stratified by molecularly defined ExPEC status, to human-source ExPEC and to laboratory E. coli for vi

Integrated transcriptomic and WGCNA analyses identify RBP7 as a regulator of skeletal muscle development in chickens.

Skeletal muscle development determines meat yield and quality in chickens. We performed transcriptomic profiling of breast muscles from fast-growing Arbor Acres (AA) and slow-growing Lushi blue-shelled-egg (LS) chicken - an indigenous dual-purpose type breed - at 1, 3, and 5 weeks. A total of 1727 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Functional enrichment indicated that AA-specific DEGs were enriched in MAPK signaling, whereas LS-specific DEGs were associated with Hedgehog signaling and branched-chain amino acid degradation. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis identi

High incidence of the gullet worm, Gongylonema pulchrum, in a squirrel monkey colony in a zoological garden in Japan.

Histological examination revealed the gullet worm (Gongylonema pulchrum) embedded in the lingual mucosa of two of four dead Bolivian squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) from a zoological garden in Kyushu, Japan. The zoo had kept the monkeys as a colony of approximately 80-100 individuals in a moated, open ground since 1981. To assess the incidence of G. pulchrum infection in this colony, lingual scraping with disposable plastic sticks was conducted in February during 2 consecutive years (2003 and 2004). The oval, thick-shelled egg containing a larva was found in 15 of 27 arbitrarily-chosen

Infection status of Baylisascaris transfuga in captive Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) from three bile farms in South Korea, with molecular analyses.

Bears harbor various endoparasites that pose risks to humans and other animals. However, information on parasitic infections in Asiatic black bears in South Korea (Korea) is limited, and potential hazards still exist because of the close contact between bears and humans on bile farms. The present study was conducted to assess the gastrointestinal parasite infection status in captive Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) at bile farms in Korea. Additionally, we aimed to characterize the molecular aspects of Baylisascaris transfuga (Nematoda: Ascarididae), the sole species investigated througho

Developmental toxicity in early chicken embryos on exposure to an organophosphorus flame retardant, tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate.

Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) is an organophosphate flame retardant detected in the environment and eggs, feathers, and livers. Early-developmental-stage avian embryos are vulnerable to the toxic effects of chemicals. However, studies on the specific effects of TCIPP on avian embryonic development are limited. We aimed to investigate the toxicity of TCIPP in early chicken embryos using a previously developed shell-less incubation system. Fertilized chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) eggs (n = 220) were exposed to 50 or 500 nmol TCIPP/(g egg) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a vehicl

Scanning electron microscopy of Onchocerca fasciata (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) adults, microfilariae and eggs with notes on histopathological findings in camels.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerca fasciata is a prevalent filarial species in camelids of Asia and Africa forming nodules in the skin of dromedary and Bactrian camels. In spite of recent advances in the biology and epidemiology of this nematode species, a relatively scant number of studies have focussed on the morphology of this parasite. The main objective of this study was to describe morphological characteristics of adults, microfilariae and eggs of O. fasciata by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), staining and histology. METHODS: From April 2016 to March 2017 dromedary camels (n = 456) were inspect

Time-Dependent Effect of Eggshell Membrane on Monosodium-Iodoacetate-Induced Osteoarthritis: Early-Stage Inflammation Control and Late-Stage Cartilage Protection.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease that causes chronic pain, swelling, stiffness, disability, and significantly reduces the quality of life. Typically, OA is treated using painkillers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). While current pharmacologic treatments are common, their potential side effects have prompted exploration into functional dietary supplements. Recently, eggshell membrane (ESM) has emerged as a potential functional ingredient for joint and connective tissue disorders due to its clinical efficacy in relieving joint pain and stiffness. Des

Effect of stocking density and age on physiological performance and dynamic gut bacterial and fungal communities in Langya hens.

BACKGROUND: The characterization of colonization and dynamic changes related to gut microorganisms might be vital, as it presents an opportunity to quantify the co-variation between stocking densities and gut microbiome of dynamic distribution. The objective of this study was to determine the stocking density on physiological performance and dynamic distribution of gut microbiome (including bacterial and fungal communities) of Langya laying hens in the two development stages. METHODS: A randomized design with 2 × 3 factorial controls consisting of two development stages (24, 43 weeks-old) wit

Fasciola hepatica: Histology of the testis in egg-producing adults of several laboratory-maintained isolates of flukes grown to maturity in cattle and sheep and in flukes from naturally infected hosts.

A total of 8 calves approximately 6 months old and 22 lambs of similar age were infected with metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica of various laboratory-maintained isolates including: Cullompton (sensitive to triclabendazole) and Sligo, Oberon and Leon (reported as resistant to triclabendazole). Ten to 16 weeks after infection, flukes were harvested from these experimental animals and the histology of the testis tissue was examined in a representative sample of flukes from each population. Adult wild-type flukes were also collected from 5 chronically infected cattle and 7 chronically infected sh

High-zinc diets accelerate molting and recovery by remodeling the cecal microbiome in laying hens.

INTRODUCTION: Conventional fasting molting can restore laying performance but imposes substantial physiological stress and welfare concerns. High-zinc diets (2% ZnO) have been proposed as a less stressful alternative, but their mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: This study compared fasting-induced molting with zinc oxide supplementation in 384 Lohmann Pink hens (65 wk). Serum, cecal contents, and ovaries were sampled across six stages from pre-molt to post-molt recovery. RESULTS: ZnO accelerated cessation of lay (5.75 vs. 8.87 d) and earlier recovery to 50% production (15.25 vs. 16.62 d) wi

Identification and characterization of estrogen and progesterone receptors from the oviduct of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

A protein extract prepared from the egg shell fiber-secreting region of the oviduct of Alligator mississippiensis was assayed for the presence of receptors for estrogen and progesterone. In the presence of [3H]-estradiol-17 beta, the extract contained an estrogen-binding activity which reached equilibrium at 25 degrees C in 1 h. Scatchard analysis demonstrated that a single estrogen-binding activity was present in the extract with a Kd of 0.5 nM for [3H]estradiol-17 beta. A steroid specificity competition assay showed the estrogen binding activity strongly recognized estradiol-17 beta and diet
