Plastic changes along auditory pathway during salicylate-induced ototoxicity: Hyperactivity and CF shifts.

High dose of salicylate, the active ingredient in aspirin, has long been known to induce transient hearing loss, tinnitus and hyperacusis making it a powerful experimental tool. These salicylate-induced perceptual disturbances are associated with a massive reduction in the neural output of the cochlea. Paradoxically, the diminished neural output of the cochlea is accompanied by a dramatic increase in sound-evoked activity in the auditory cortex (AC) and several other parts of the central nervous system. Exactly where the increase in neural activity begins and builds up along the central audito

Cochlear ablation effects on amino acid levels in the chinchilla cochlear nucleus.

Inner ear damage can lead to hearing disorders, including tinnitus, hyperacusis, and hearing loss. We measured the effects of severe inner ear damage, produced by cochlear ablation, on the levels and distributions of amino acids in the first brain center of the auditory system, the cochlear nucleus. Measurements were also made for its projection pathways and the superior olivary nuclei. Cochlear ablation produces complete degeneration of the auditory nerve, which provides a baseline for interpreting the effects of partial damage to the inner ear, such as that from ototoxic drugs or intense sou

Temporomandibular joint disorder complaints in tinnitus: further hints for a putative tinnitus subtype.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is considered to be highly heterogeneous with respect to its etiology, its comorbidities and the response to specific interventions. Subtyping is recommended, but it remains to be determined which criteria are useful, since it has not yet been clearly demonstrated whether and to which extent etiologic factors, comorbid states and interventional response are related to each other and are thus applicable for subtyping tinnitus. Analyzing the Tinnitus Research Initiative Database we differentiated patients according to presence or absence of comorbid temporomandibular joint (T

PTSD and Audio Vestibular Symptoms: A Two-Way Street Driven by the Amygdala? A Speculative Hypothesis.

Background/Objective: Auditory and vestibular (AV) symptoms can be considered functional neurological disorders (FND) when they do not arise from structural abnormalities. These symptoms can arise as expressions of underlying neuropsychological or psychiatric conditions, yet they may also play a role in precipitating or maintaining such disorders. This systematic review aimed at exploring the prevalence of AV symptoms in post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) as well as to understand if they correlate with each other. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature including PubMed

Strain Comparison in Rats Differentiates Strain-Specific from More General Correlates of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss and Tinnitus.

Experiments in rodent animal models help to reveal the characteristics and underlying mechanisms of pathologies related to hearing loss such as tinnitus or hyperacusis. However, a reliable understanding is still lacking. Here, four different rat strains (Sprague Dawley, Wistar, Long Evans, and Lister Hooded) underwent comparative analysis of electrophysiological (auditory brainstem responses, ABRs) and behavioral measures after noise trauma induction to differentiate between strain-dependent trauma effects and more consistent changes across strains, such as frequency dependence or systematic t

Noise Trauma-Induced Behavioral Gap Detection Deficits Correlate with Reorganization of Excitatory and Inhibitory Local Circuits in the Inferior Colliculus and Are Prevented by Acoustic Enrichment.

Hearing loss leads to a host of cellular and synaptic changes in auditory brain areas that are thought to give rise to auditory perception deficits such as temporal processing impairments, hyperacusis, and tinnitus. However, little is known about possible changes in synaptic circuit connectivity that may underlie these hearing deficits. Here, we show that mild hearing loss as a result of brief noise exposure leads to a pronounced reorganization of local excitatory and inhibitory circuits in the mouse inferior colliculus. The exact nature of these reorganizations correlated with the presence or

Neural changes in the auditory cortex of awake guinea pigs after two tinnitus inducers: salicylate and acoustic trauma.

Tinnitus, also called phantom auditory perception, is a major health problem in western countries. As such, a significant amount of effort has been devoted to understanding its mechanisms, including studies in animals wherein a supposed "tinnitus state" can be induced. Here, we studied on the same awake animals the effects of a high-dose of salicylate and of an acoustic trauma both at levels known to induce tinnitus. Recordings of cortical activity (local field potentials) from chronically implanted electrodes in the same animals under each condition allowed direct comparison of the effects of

[Chronic migraine: clinical manifestations and differential diagnosis].

Chronic migraine is a condition that has been present since the dawn of medicine, although only recently has progress been made in characterising it nosologically. It is the result of the evolution of episodic migraine which, at one particular moment and in relation to certain risk factors, changes its characteristics. The diagnostic criteria of chronic migraine, which were initially very restrictive and based on the specific type of patient from the most important headache units, are gradually being adjusted to match the real situation experienced in most neurology departments. The considerat

A model for the speech-reception threshold in noise without and with a hearing aid.

This paper presents a summary of the main results of our current research programme on the speech-reception threshold for sentences as a function of the sound-pressure level of interfering noise. The experimental results agree with a simple quantitative model in which every hearing loss for speech is interpreted as the sum of a class-A loss (attenuation), characterized by a reduction in the levels of both speech signal and noise, and a class-D loss (distortion), comparable to a reduction in S/N ratio. The experiments confirm the model's prediction that a hearing aid can compensate for class-A

Longitudinal analysis of the risk factors for onset and change in tinnitus in the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study.

INTRODUCTION: Effective prevention and intervention strategies for tinnitus rely on identifying risk factors and understanding its progression over time. However, longitudinal data on these aspects are limited. This study therefore aimed to (1) assess the incidence of tinnitus and identify risk factors associated with tinnitus development, and (2) assess the impact of tinnitus and change in impact over time and identify factors associated with this change. METHODS: Data from the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study, a population-based cohort of individuals born between 1946-1964, were used. Informa

Noise trauma induced plastic changes in brain regions outside the classical auditory pathway.

The effects of intense noise exposure on the classical auditory pathway have been extensively investigated; however, little is known about the effects of noise-induced hearing loss on non-classical auditory areas in the brain such as the lateral amygdala (LA) and striatum (Str). To address this issue, we compared the noise-induced changes in spontaneous and tone-evoked responses from multiunit clusters (MUC) in the LA and Str with those seen in auditory cortex (AC) in rats. High-frequency octave band noise (10-20 kHz) and narrow band noise (16-20 kHz) induced permanent threshold shifts at high

Red ear syndrome precipitated by a dietary trigger: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Red ear syndrome is a rare condition characterized by episodic attacks of erythema of the ear accompanied by burning ear pain. Symptoms are brought on by touch, exertion, heat or cold, stress, neck movements and washing or brushing of hair. Diagnosis and treatment of this condition are challenging. The case we report here involves a woman whose symptoms were brought on by a dietary trigger: orange juice as well as stress, causing significant physical and psychological morbidity. Avoidance of triggers resulted in symptomatic improvement. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old Caucasian
