Starting a regional collaborative research group for COVID-19 in pregnancy: the Southern Michigan experience.

The outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 elicited a surge in publications. Obstetric reports were with few exceptions characterized by small sample sizes with potentially limited generalizability. In this review, evidence suggests increased susceptibility to COVID-19 in pregnancy; common pregnancy comorbidities may help explain worse outcomes. While the risk of death is low, pregnancy may be associated with increased need for ventilation. Prematurity rates seem to be increased but may be accounted for in part by higher cesarean rates, to a large degree accounted for by elective decision to shorten the c

Collaborative Approaches to the Support of People with Disabilities: The Underserved and Unserved.

BACKGROUND: Underserved and unserved people are individuals who lack necessary health services. They can be found in both high- and low-income countries with disabilities in areas such as speech, language, hearing, swallowing, physical, and neurological, as well as other health problems. In addition, academic programs that prepare students to serve underserved or unserved communities do not exist in some countries. Collaborative projects allow those with expertise to share their knowledge, strategies, methods, and technologies with health practitioners, administrators, educators, students, and

Perceptions and acceptability of drone-based larviciding using Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis in rice fields in Madagascar, 2022: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Madagascar's malaria burden has been increasing for several years despite continued investments in vector control. Supplemental measures to reduce vector populations and outdoor biting, such as larval source management (LSM), may be required in some settings. Madagascar piloted drone-delivered microbial larviciding using Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) in rice fields in two districts with populations unfamiliar with drones during Feb-Jul 2022. METHODS: We assessed knowledge and perceptions among purposefully selected rice farmers, rice field workers, and community members

Operationalizing the One Health approach in a conflict-affected setting: A scientometric review of policy foundations, systemic gaps, and future pathways in Ukraine.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The One Health approach integrates human, animal, plant, and environmental health through multisectoral collaboration and is increasingly recognized as essential for addressing zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), food security, and ecosystem degradation. Ukraine has formally adopted One Health principles through national strategies and international partnerships; however, the ongoing full-scale military conflict has profoundly disrupted health, veterinary, and environmental systems, challenging effective implementation. This study aimed to evaluate the curren

Barriers and enablers to emergency obstetric and newborn care services use in Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia: a qualitative case study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 11.4 million untreated obstetric complications did not receive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) services yearly, with the highest burden in low and middle-income countries. Half of the Ethiopian women with obstetric complications did not receive EmONC services. However, essential aspects of the problem have not been assessed in depth. This study, therefore, explored the various aspects of barriers and enablers to women's EmONC services utilization in southern Ethiopia. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative case study research design was used in nine districts of the Wol

Eliminating onchocerciasis within the Meme River Basin of Cameroon: A social-ecological approach to understanding everyday realities and health systems.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis affects some of the world's most marginalized people, perpetuating poverty and inequalities. Mass Drug Administration (MDA) with Ivermectin has taken place within the Meme River basin region in Cameroon for over 15 years. Despite this, onchocerciasis is still prevalent in the region due to existing and emerging contextual challenges. Using a social-ecological approach we explore the everyday realities of communities, highlighting the challenges and potential solutions that could support Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) programmes when transitioning from control to el

One Health in Practice: Using Integrated Bite Case Management to Increase Detection of Rabid Animals in Tanzania.

Rabies is a neglected zoonotic disease that causes an estimated 59,000 human deaths worldwide annually, mostly in Africa and Asia. A target of zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies has been set for 2030, and large-scale control programs are now advocated. However, in most low-income endemic countries surveillance to guide rabies control is weak and few cases of rabies are recorded. There is an urgent need to enhance surveillance to improve timely case detection and inform rabies control and prevention, by operationalizing a "One Health" approach. Here we present data from a study piloting

Implementation factors of non-communicable disease policies and programmes for children and youth in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Despite declared life-course principles in non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention and management, worldwide focus has been on older rather than younger populations. However, the burden from childhood NCDs has mounted; particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). There is limited knowledge regarding the implementation of paediatric NCD policies and programmes in LMICs, despite their disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality. We aimed to understand the barriers to and facilitators of paediatric NCD policy and programme implementation in LMICs. METHOD

Navigating healthcare for adults with intellectual disabilities in Singapore: a qualitative study of barriers and facilitators to healthcare system access and care-seeking.

BACKGROUND: Despite Singapore's robust healthcare infrastructure, adults with intellectual disabilities (AWIDs) and caregivers face insufficient support. Singapore's multicultural context, ageing population, and income inequality further complicate equitable care. These challenges underscore the need to reassess the healthcare system for this group. Therefore, this study aimed to: (1) catalogue barriers and facilitators affecting health system access and care-seeking for AWIDs, caregivers, and health professionals before intervention; and (2) provide recommendations to address the barriers and

(In)coherence between Chagas disease policy and the experiences of those affected in Mexico: The need for a transdisciplinary approach.

Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a significant public health challenge in México, symbolizing systemic neglect in healthcare. Despite longstanding efforts to control its transmission, there are critical gaps in the alignment of public health policies with the lived experiences of affected individuals. This study examines these dissonances by analyzing qualitative interviews with 61 individuals diagnosed with T. cruzi and reviewing relevant Mexican public health regulations, including national standards and action programs. Findings reveal that most diagnoses oc

Rabies awareness and dog ownership among rural northern and southern Chadian communities-Analysis of a community-based, cross-sectional household survey.

Canine rabies represents a major - but preventable - public health threat in Chad. In preparation for a nation-wide canine parenteral mass vaccination campaign we conducted a community-based, cross-sectional multi-stage cluster survey in 40 villages in two southern and two northern regions of Chad. Our objective was to investigate rabies awareness and dog-ownership among the rural population. Almost half of the households (45%) owned dogs, with an overall dog:human ratio of 1:7.8. Southern households owned almost two thirds (701/918) of all dogs and the number of dogs per household was twice a

Understanding child mental health care pathways in community-based services: a qualitative study in a French child and adolescent medico-social centre (CMPP).

BACKGROUND: Child and adolescent mental health is increasingly recognized as a major public health concern worldwide. However, access to timely and coordinated mental health care remains uneven, particularly for children experiencing psychosocial, developmental or learning difficulties. Fragmentation across health, social care and education systems often contributes to discontinuous care pathways, especially in resource-constrained and rural settings. While a substantial body of literature on child mental health services originates from high-income countries, the organization of services diffe
