BACKGROUND: Tinnitus, the perception of sound in the absence of external auditory stimuli, is commonly associated with problems of the auditory system. Head and neck disorders can also be involved in tinnitus emergence. In such cases, the term somatosensory tinnitus is used. Physiotherapy treatments have been identified as a promising avenue in the treatment of somatosensory tinnitus.
PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to explore the effect of a physiotherapy program on the intensity and severity of somatosensory tinnitus and to identify the clinical characteristics of the patients who respond

BACKGROUND: Several years ago, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the auditory cortex has been introduced as a treatment approach for chronic tinnitus. Even if this treatment is beneficial for a subgroup of patients, the overall effects are limited. This limitation may be due to the fact that the auditory cortex is only one of several brain areas involved in tinnitus. Whereas auditory areas are considered to code for tinnitus loudness, conscious perception of and attention allocation to tinnitus is supposed to be reflected by network activity involving frontal and parietal

The objective of this research was to test whether efficient tinnitus suppression could be achieved by electrical stimulation of the single most basal electrode contact of a cochlear implant. This approach simulates the effects of electrical stimulation using a round-window electrode. The study was performed in 10 adult cochlear implant patients showing complete or almost complete tinnitus suppression during electrical stimulation with their standard fitting-MAP. In all patients, tinnitus appeared again when the implant was switched off. Five Nucleus implant (1 CI532, 4 CI24RE CA) users and 5

Users of bilateral cochlear implants and a cochlear implant combined with a contralateral hearing aid are sensitive to interaural time differences (ITDs). The way cochlear implant speech processors work and differences between modalities may result in interaural differences in shape of the temporal envelope presented to the binaural system. The effect of interaural differences in envelope shape on ITD sensitivity was investigated with normal-hearing listeners using a 4 kHz pure tone modulated with a periodic envelope with a trapezoid shape in each cycle. In one ear the onset segment of the tra

Exploding head syndrome is a sensory parasomnia characterized by the perception of loud noises and/or a sense of explosion in the head that occurs when transitioning to or from sleep. Despite receiving little attention from both researchers and clinicians, studies suggest that approximately 10%-15% of individuals have episodes, with significant levels of fear occurring in a subset of cases. Using two independent samples, we examine sleep and well-being variables associated with exploding head syndrome. We focused on insomnia symptoms, life stress, anxiety and depression symptoms, and sleep exp

HYPOTHESIS: Applying neurotrophins to the round window immediately after a single noise exposure will prevent noise-induced hidden hearing loss.
BACKGROUND: Loud noise can eliminate neural connections between inner hair cells and their afferent neurons (thereby diminishing sound perception) without causing a detectable change on audiogram. This phenomenon is termed hidden hearing loss.
METHODS: Guinea pigs were exposed for 2 hours to 4 to 8 kHz noise at either 95 or 105 dB SPL. Immediately afterward a 4 μl bolus of neurotrophins (brain-derived neurotrophic factor 1 μg/μl, and neurotrophin-3

BACKGROUND: Sounds that cause disturbances and perturbations to the vestibular (inner ear organ responses) and visual (acute oculomotor responses) systems can impact postural stability. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of different types of sounds and noises on both static and dynamic PS.
METHODS: A total of 20 participants (12 females and 8 males; age: 21.35 ± 1.79 years; height: 170.7 ± 9.3 cm; mass: 66.725 ± 14.1 kg) were tested using the limits of stability (LOS) test on the BTrackS™ balance plate and a Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, when exposed to four different sounds an

Hearing loss caused by frequent and persistent exposure to loud noise is one of the most common diseases in modern society. Many studies have demonstrated the characteristics of noise-induced hearing loss in human and non-human vertebrate models, including frequency-specific noise-induced hearing loss and sex-biased differences. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a useful hearing research model because its lateral line is easy to access and because of its detailed perception of sound. Despite the increasing popularity of zebrafish as a model for NIHL, a better understanding of this model is needed to

The role of stress and its neuroendocrine mediators in tinnitus is unclear. In this study, we measure cortisol as an indicator of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis alterations and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) as a marker of adaptive neuroplasticity in hair of chronic tinnitus patients to investigate relationships with tinnitus-related and psychological factors. Cross-sectional data from chronic tinnitus inpatients were analyzed. Data collection included hair sampling, pure tone audiometry, tinnitus pitch and loudness matching, and psychometric questionnaires. Elastic net re

Unilateral auditory deprivation induces a reduction in the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) and an increase in loudness. These findings have been interpreted as a compensatory change in neural gain, governed by changes in excitatory and inhibitory neural inputs. There is also evidence to suggest that changes in neural gain can be measured using the auditory brainstem response (ABR). The present study extended Munro et al. (2014) [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 135, 315-322] by investigating changes after 4 days of unilateral earplug use to: (i) ART, (ii) ABR and (iii) loudness. Because changes may occur d

Munro and Trotter [Inter J Audiol 45, 684-688, 2006] reported an asymmetry in uncomfortable loudness levels (ULLs) in a preliminary study using 12 experienced unilateral hearing aids users. The aim of the present study was to investigate ULLs in a larger sample of listeners with unilateral and bilateral hearing aid experience. Participants were adults with symmetrical high-frequency hearing impairment. There were 48 listeners with unilateral experience, 13 listeners with bilateral experience and a control group of 47 listeners with no hearing aid experience. The minimum duration of hearing aid

Animal research has shown that loss of normal acoustic stimulation can increase spontaneous firing in the central auditory system and induce cortical map plasticity. Enriched acoustic environment after noise trauma prevents map plasticity and abolishes neural signs of tinnitus. In humans, the tinnitus spectrum overlaps with the area of hearing loss. Based on these findings it can be hypothesized that stimulating the auditory system by presenting music compensating specifically for the hearing loss might also suppress chronic tinnitus. To verify this hypothesis, a study was conducted in three g

Phantom electrode (PE) stimulation is achieved by simultaneously stimulating out-of-phase from two adjacent intra-cochlear electrodes with different amplitudes. If the basal electrode stimulates with a smaller amplitude than the apical electrode of the pair, the resulting electrical field is pushed away from the basal electrode producing a lower pitch. There is great interest in using PE stimulation in a processing strategy as it can be used to provide stimulation to regions of the cochlea located more apically than the most apical contact on the electrode array. The result is that even lower

OBJECTIVES: Nonauditory or facial-nerve sensations limit the electrical dynamic range of some cochlear implant (CI) users with inner ear malformations (IEMs). Triphasic pulses, which redistribute charge over three phases, can raise comfortable current levels without provoking side effects, but their effect on everyday listening remains unclear. We asked whether triphasic stimulation improves speech perception and spectral-temporal processing in CI users with IEM and whether the same change benefits-or degrades-performance in users with normal inner ear anatomy (NIE). We hypothesized that triph

BACKGROUND: People with laryngectomy who use a tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis for communication experience changes to respiratory function resulting in reduced breath support and increased secretions. This impacts tracheoesophageal voice quality and volume. Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) is an effective treatment for cough management, voice and respiratory function in other clinical populations, such as neurodegenerative conditions and benign voice disorders. There is limited evidence for the use of EMST in people with laryngectomy. This study explores EMST feasibility and prel

Examination was made of the behaviors exhibited on selected binaural tasks by 556 persons with diagnosed peripheral hearing loss or central nervous system damage. The tasks used included loudness balancing (LB), intracranial midline imaging (MI), masking level differences (MLD), and binaural beats (BB). The methods used were chosen for their clinical utility. Loudness balancing and midline imaging were of the most diagnostic value when hearing loss was present. Masking level differences were best at detecting pathology which did not produce hearing loss. None of the techniques were sensitive t

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a symptom defined as the perception of sound in the absence of an external source. In England alone there are an estimated ¾ million general practice consultations every year where the primary complaint is tinnitus, equating to a major burden on healthcare services. Clinical management strategies include education and advice, relaxation therapy, tinnitus retraining therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, sound enrichment using ear-level sound generators or hearing aids, and drug therapies to manage co-morbid symptoms such as sleep difficulties, anxiety or depression.
