Acidic phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) isoforms in snake venoms, particularly those from Bothrops jararacussu, have not been characterized. This article reports the isolation and partial biochemical, functional and structural characterization of four acidic PLA(2)s (designated SIIISPIIA, SIIISPIIB, SIIISPIIIA and SIIISPIIIB) from this venom. Antibodies against Bothrops asper myotoxin were purified from a polyvalent antivenom by affinity chromatography. These antibodies neutralized most of the myotoxic activity of crude B. asper venom, as judged by histologic evaluation of skeletal muscle and determination of plasma creatine kinase levels in mice. The coralsnake Micrurus dumerilii (Elapidae) is reported to cause envenomings of medical importance. Previous studies characterized the protein composition of its venom, with phospholipase A2 (PLA2) proteins the most abundant. Intravascular hemolysis has been described in envenomings by the Eastern coral snake, Micrurus fulvius, in dogs. An experimental model of intravascular hemolysis was developed in mice after intravenous (i.v.) injection of M. fulvius venom.
