Levers to decrease exposure to harmful chemicals: the case of Personal Care Products and cosmetics.

Many chemicals used in personal care products (PCPs) have suspected health effects. Thus, PCP use may be an important modifiable source of chemical exposures. We conducted a five-day intervention during which women (N = 103, ages 18-30) in Grenoble, France, were asked to refrain from using their usual PCPs and were provided with alternative products free from the chemicals of interest. These included eleven phenols, sixteen phthalates, and two glycol ethers. Participants collected a sample of each urinary event for 24-hour periods before and on the last day of the intervention, from which chem

Dietary patterns and exposure to non-persistent endocrine-disrupting chemicals during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to non-persistent endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is widespread, causing various adverse health effects, especially during pregnancy. Diet is a major source of EDCs and the identification of dietary patterns that give rise to higher exposure levels is crucial. We aimed to explore the relationship between dietary patterns during pregnancy and exposure to non-persistent EDCs. METHODS: We included 640 pregnant women from the Barcelona Life Study Cohort (BiSC), Spain. Using food frequency questionnaires (2nd trimester), we estimated ultraprocessed food (UPF) consumption

Association between endocrine-disrupting chemical mixtures and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with metabolic syndrome as a mediator among adults: A population-based study in Korea.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may play a role in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); however, studies on the combined effects of EDC mixtures on NAFLD development are limited. Here, we explored the association between exposure to EDC mixtures and NAFLD and investigated the potential mediating role of metabolic syndrome (MetS). We included participants from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey Cycle 4 (2018-2020) and quantified the urinary concentrations of various EDCs-eight phthalate metabolites, three phenols, one antibacterial compound, four parabens, four polycycl

Exposure to Environmental Pollutants and Risk of Diarrhea: A Systematic Review.

This systematic review investigates the association between environmental pollutants and the risk of diarrhea, a critical public health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The review synthesizes findings from various studies that highlight the impact of contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), microplastics, and parabens on gastrointestinal health. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive literature search across databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar yielded 496 articles, of which 11 met the inclusion crit

Prenatal exposure to synthetic chemicals in relation to HPA axis activity: A systematic review of the epidemiological literature.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant people are widely exposed to numerous synthetic chemicals with known endocrine-disrupting properties (e.g., phthalates, phenols, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)). To date, most epidemiological research on how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) disrupt hormone pathways has focused on estrogens, androgens, and thyroid hormones. Far less research has examined the impact of EDCs on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, despite its central role in the physiologic stress response and metabolic function. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the epidemiolog

Early-life exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and autistic traits in childhood and adolescence: a systematic review of epidemiological studies.

AIMS: Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) during critical neurodevelopmental windows has been associated with the risk of autistic traits. This systematic review of epidemiological studies examined the association between maternal exposure to EDCs during pregnancy and the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the offspring. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar from inception to November 17, 2022, for studies investigating the association between prenatal exposure to EDCs and outcomes related to ASD. Two independent reviewers screened studie

Systematic evidence mapping informs a class-based approach to assessing personal care products and pubertal timing.

BACKGROUND: Personal care products (PCPs) contain many different compounds and are a source of exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including phthalates and phenols. Early-life exposure to EDCs commonly found in PCPs has been linked to earlier onset of puberty. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the human and animal evidence on the association between puberty-related outcomes and exposure to PCPs and their chemical constituents and, if there is sufficient evidence, identify groups of chemicals and outcomes to support a systematic review for a class-based hazard or risk assessment. Chemicals of concern in personal care products used by women of color in three communities of California.

BACKGROUND: Personal care products (PCPs) may contain chemicals associated with adverse health effects. Prior studies found differences in product use by race/ethnicity and suggest some women are disproportionately exposed to chemicals of concern (CoCs). OBJECTIVE: We quantified chemicals linked to cancer, reproductive or developmental harm, or endocrine disruption in PCPs used by women of color. METHODS: We documented PCPs in stores frequented by Black, Latina, and Vietnamese women in their communities in California and CoCs on ingredient labels of 546 unique hair, skin, makeup, nail, deodo

Bone Disruption and Environmental Pollutants.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) are ubiquitous and may significantly contribute to environmental pollution and contamination in humans and wildlife. Ecological pollutants could interfere with bone homeostasis through different mechanisms, including hormonal imbalance, direct osteoblast toxicity, and enhancement of osteoclasts activity, leading to either osteopenia or osteoporosis. Among these chemicals, bisphenols, dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorobiphenyls, poly- and perfluoroalkyl, phthalates, parabens, organotins, and cadmium may play a role in the bone

Endocrine disrupting chemicals in indoor and outdoor air.

The past 50 years have seen rapid development of new building materials, furnishings, and consumer products and a corresponding explosion in new chemicals in the built environment. While exposure levels are largely undocumented, they are likely to have increased as a wider variety of chemicals came into use, people began spending more time indoors, and air exchange rates decreased to improve energy efficiency. As a result of weak regulatory requirements for chemical safety testing, only limited toxicity data are available for these chemicals. Over the past 15 years, some chemical classes commo

Oryza Ceramax in Dermatologic Care: A Multi-pathway Approach to Skin Hydration and Barrier Repair.

Environmental stressors, including climate change, pollution, and lifestyle factors, can disrupt the skin barrier, leading to dryness and exacerbating conditions such as atopic dermatitis (AD), acne, and psoriasis. Effective barrier repair requires maintaining hydration and lipid balance, particularly the ceramide-cholesterol-fatty acid ratio of 3:1:1, which is recommended by dermatological societies for optimal skin restoration. Although traditional moisturizers provide hydration through occlusives, humectants, and emollients, they often do not achieve sustained barrier repair or adequate int

Fabrication of microporous organic network incorporated monolithic column for improved high performance liquid chromatographic separation of small molecules.

BACKGROUND: As a class of boomingly developed porous material, microporous organic networks (MONs) demonstrated great prospects in HPLC because of their unique structures and excellent stabilities. However, the agglomerated, irregular, and sub-micron sized MONs obtained via the traditional synthesis methods inevitably cause high column pressure and low column efficiency, rendering the main obstacles for their applications in HPLC. Monolithic column has the characteristics of continuous porous structure, fast mass transfer rate, excellent permeability, and low column pressure. Therefore, the in

Nephrotoxic Effects of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals: A Systematic Review.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are widespread environmental pollutants that interfere with hormonal regulation and are increasingly linked to kidney dysfunction. The kidney's central role in xenobiotic filtration and excretion makes it vulnerable to cumulative toxic exposures that trigger oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and related disorders. This systematic review synthesized evidence from human, animal, and computational studies assessing exposure to multiple EDC classes, including bisphenols, phthalates, parabens, alkylphenols, v

Cosmetics and Cancer: Adverse Event Reports Submitted to the Food and Drug Administration.

There have been numerous controversies surrounding cosmetic products and increased cancer risk. Such controversies include associations between parabens and breast cancer, hair dyes and hematologic malignancies, and talc powders and ovarian cancer. Despite the prominent media coverage and numerous scientific investigations, the majority of these associations currently lack conclusive evidence. In 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made publically available all adverse event reports in Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition's Adverse Event Reporting System (CAERS), which incl

Highly efficient and compatible shampoo for use after hair transplant.

BACKGROUND: Sensitive or hyperreactive skin is a common condition defined by prickling, burning, pain, and pruritus. Although this skin problem was initially described on the face, the scalp is often affected. A sensitive scalp can react with irritation to harsh surfactants or other additives which are often present in shampoos. For this reason, we developed a new rinse-off hypertolerant shampoo specifically designed for the hypersensitive and problematic scalp. METHODS: The shampoo formulation is based on an extremely mild surfactant system and contains bisabolol, an anti-irritant and anti-i

Exposure to propylparaben induces craniofacial bone developmental toxicity through ROS-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos.

Propylparaben (PrP) is an extensively utilized antimicrobial preservative in food industry, cosmetics, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals. Nevertheless, the toxicological effects of PrP on animals are still not well characterized. In this study, zebrafish embryos and larvae were exposed to PrP at concentrations of 5, 7.5, and 10 μM from 10 h post-fertilization (hpf) to 4 days post-fertilization (dpf), reflecting international safety standards. PrP exposure induced severe craniofacial cartilage deformities in larvae at 4 dpf, concomitant with a significant elevation in oxidative stress

Identification of Bacterial Metabolites Modulating Breast Cancer Cell Proliferation and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition.

Breast cancer patients are characterized by the oncobiotic transformation of multiple microbiome communities, including the gut microbiome. Oncobiotic transformation of the gut microbiome impairs the production of antineoplastic bacterial metabolites. The goal of this study was to identify bacterial metabolites with antineoplastic properties. We constructed a 30-member bacterial metabolite library and screened the library compounds for effects on cell proliferation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. The metabolites were applied to 4T1 murine breast cancer cells in concentrations correspond

A Novel In Vitro Assay Using Human iPSC-Derived Sensory Neurons to Evaluate the Effects of External Chemicals on Neuronal Morphology: Possible Implications in the Prediction of Abnormal Skin Sensation.

Neuronal morphological changes in the epidermis are considered to be one of causes of abnormal skin sensations in dry skin-based skin diseases. The present study aimed to develop an in vitro model optimised for human skin to test the external factors that lead to its exacerbation. Human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived sensory neurons (hiPSC-SNs) were used as a model of human sensory neurons. The effects of chemical substances on these neurons were evaluated by observing the elongation of nerve fibers, incidence of blebs (bead-like swellings), and the expression of nicotinamide mononucleo
