Anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders are common childhood psychiatric disorders. Behavioral inhibition (BI) is a widely studied risk factor for anxiety. Less is known about overcontrol, a related behavioral phenotype characterized by concern for errors, perfectionism, and inflexibility and also associated with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Both BI and overcontrol show associations with aberrant cognitive control and neural error responding (via the error-related negativity; ERN) yet it is unknown whether each imparts differential risk. Understanding whether overcontrol demon

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is a construct characterized by behaviors, emotions, and beliefs on eating healthy food and excessive attention to diet; moreover, dieting has been considered a risk factor in ON symptoms development. The principal aim of this study was to investigate the differences in clinical and non-clinical groups most at risk of ON. Aspects that could be associated with ON (Eating Disorders [EDs], obsessive-compulsive symptomatology, perfectionistic traits, anxiety, depression, Body Mass Index [BMI]) were investigated in all groups.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 32

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the field experiences and risk factors related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among disaster rescue workers.
METHODS: A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan on February 6, 2016. A standardized, paper-based, self-administered survey questionnaire including demographic information, field experiences and the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL) was conducted among emergency medical technicians (EMTs) one month after the earthquake. A multivariate regression model was used to analyze the associations between risk factors and the

OBJECTIVE: Current nosology conceptualises body dysmorphic disorder as being related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, but the direct evidence to support this conceptualisation is mixed. In this systematic review, we aimed to provide an integrated overview of research that has directly compared body dysmorphic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
METHOD: The PubMed database was searched for empirical studies which had directly compared body dysmorphic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder groups across any subject matter. Of 379 records, 31 met inclusion criteria and were reviewed

Certain clinical traits (e.g., ruminative response style, self-criticism, perfectionism, anxiety sensitivity, fear of negative evaluation, and thought suppression) increase the risk for and chronicity of emotional disorders. Similar to traditional personality traits, they are considered dispositional and typically show high temporal stability. Because the personality and clinical-traits literatures evolved largely independently, connections between them are not fully understood. We sought to map the interface between a widely studied set of clinical and personality traits. Two samples (N = 385

BACKGROUND: Women with bulimia nervosa (BN) have disturbances of mood and behavior and alterations of monoamine activity when they are bingeing and purging. It is not known whether these alterations are secondary to pathological eating behavior or traits that could contribute to the pathogenesis of BN.
METHODS: To avoid the confounding effects of pathological eating behavior, we studied 30 women after long-term recovery (>1 year with no bingeing or purging, normal weight, and regular menstrual cycles) from BN. Subjects were compared with 31 healthy volunteer women. We assessed psychiatric dia

The onset of running-related pain, whether during or after running training or during a running competition, is a very common phenomenon among runners. This type of pain is most often closely related to the occurrence of running injuries, which is why it is important how runners interpret and respond to it. This is a complex process involving several factors, but misconceptions and beliefs about pain have a significant impact on runners' decisions. It is important for doctors and physical therapists to understand how runners behave when they experience pain and what influences their decisions.

BACKGROUND: The Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) in the DSM-5 is a person-centered instrument for systematically appraising the impact of sociocultural factors in psychiatric assessment. The CFI has been shown to be feasible, acceptable, and useful in various clinical contexts. However, to this date there is only one published report describing the use of the CFI with patients with eating disorders.
AIMS: To explore the potential benefits and challenges of utilizing the CFI in the assessment of eating disorders.
METHODS: As an addendum to an ongoing qualitative study about barriers to tr

BACKGROUND: Māori (the Indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand) report higher rates of eating disorders than non-Māori, but access treatment at lower rates. Diagnostic terms lacking in cultural relevance likely contribute to Māori exclusion in eating disorder spaces. Developing terms in te reo Māori (the Māori language) presents an opportunity to challenge eating disorder stereotypes and increase cultural safety in the eating disorder workforce.
METHODOLOGY: Guided by a Māori worldview and the practice of wānanga (to meet, discuss, and think deeply about a topic), we present a Māori languag

BACKGROUND: Goal setting and goal-focused work is widely used in young people's mental health settings. However, little is known about how, why or for whom this is helpful. This study aims to explore the mechanisms of collaborative goal setting as part of therapeutic relationships: is it helpful for young people experiencing anxiety and/or depression, how and why/not, for whom, and under what circumstances?
METHODS: Online database searches generated 10,907 records. Seven unique studies are included, combined with insight analysis from directed discussions with international advisors with liv

Introduction: One of the major problems with inpatient treatment of adolescent girls with an eating disorder (ED) is that the strategies learned during their hospital stay are not easily applied or maintained in their daily lives, and this has been related to high rates of relapse and readmission. The ECHOMANTRA programme was developed to optimize outcomes during and following inpatient or day-patient treatment. ECHOMANTRA is based on interventions for carers (Experienced Carers Helping Others, ECHO) and patients (Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults, MANTRA) and is develope

BACKGROUND: Patients with anorexia nervosa-restricting type (AN-R) sometimes develop accompanying bulimic symptoms or the full syndrome of bulimia nervosa (BN). If clinicians could predict who might change into the bulimic sub-type or BN, preventative steps could be taken. Therefore, we investigated anthropometric and psychological factors possibly associated with such changes.
METHOD: All participants were from a study by the Japanese Genetic Research Group for Eating Disorders. Of 80 patients initially diagnosed with AN-R, 22 changed to the AN-Binge Eating/Purging Type (AN-BP) and 14 to BN

OBJECTIVE: A focus on transdiagnostic targets is one of the key strategies for developing effective, efficient, and scalable treatments for mental health conditions. We conducted an umbrella review of recent meta-analyses (August 2022 to May 2026) to update our understanding of critical transdiagnostic intervention targets that could inform cognitive behavioral therapy augmentation.
METHOD: We included prospective cohort, randomized controlled trials, and longitudinal data adopting the search strategy in Hazzard et al. (2023), who previously identified concern over mistakes, perfectionism, an

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the frequency and characteristics of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) in patients with Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS).
BACKGROUND: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic condition involving intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions), while Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is a personality disorder characterized by specific traits such as perfectionism, rigidity and need for control. Both conditions frequently overlap, but their prevalence in patients wi

BACKGROUND: Young musicians starting their professional education are particularly vulnerable to playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs). In the context of research on PRMDs, physical and psychological associated factors are frequently highlighted without investigating their complex interrelationships. The objective of this exploratory study was to examine the associations between lifestyle, music practice habits, physical and psychological variables, and PRMDs in student musicians.
METHODS: Students of the Geneva University of Music participated in the survey. The primary outcome w

INTRODUCTION: Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS), including testosterone and synthetic derivatives, are typically used to increase muscle mass. Many users develop a dependence on these substances, contributing to worsened physical and mental health outcomes. Aspects of personality and executive dysfunction may represent underlying vulnerabilities for developing dependence.
OBJECTIVE: To identify levels of AAS dependence within substance use disorder (SUD) treatment patients and assess the relationship between dependence severity and personality traits and executive function (EF).

OBJECTIVE: Musician's dystonia represents a special case of focal dystonia. It is described as a task-specific movement disorder which presents itself as muscular incoordination or loss of voluntary fine-motor control of extensively trained movements while a musician is playing the instrument. Several triggering factors have been identified, such as overuse, chronic pain, perfectionism, and anxiety disorders. As a common feature, dysfunctional self-management and stress-coping mechanisms are at the root of the aforementioned behaviors. Based on long-term experience from our musicians' medicine
