Oral orthopedics and movement of maxillary segments. A roentgen stereophotogrammetric study.

An infant with a complete unilateral cleft of the lip and palate underwent maxillary expansion treatment using an oral orthopedic appliance. Movement of the maxillary bone segments was studied by means of metallic implants and roentgen stereophotogrammetry, and intra-oral changes were recorded by measuring transverse dimensions on casts. Expansion treatment had almost no influence on the positions of the maxillary segments, and movements of the segments showed little agreement with measures on casts. The findings suggest that the appropriate use of the term oral orthopedics and the evaluation

Study protocol for a pilot randomized crossover trial: Comparing the clinical utility, feasibility, and patient outcomes of remote 3D-printed orthosis fabrication using an innovative heat-reshapable PCL.

INTRODUCTION: Orthotic fabrication is a widely used option of the conservative management of carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis, where conventional low-temperature thermoplastic orthosis requires in-person expertise and adjustments, which limit access to care. Advances in 3D printing and smartphone-based scanning offer opportunities for remote orthosis fabrication. However, the feasibility, accuracy, and patient outcomes compared with traditional methods remain unclear. METHODS: This randomized crossover pilot trial will compare remote 3D-printed orthoses, fabricated using a novel heat re-s

Granular stockpile volume dataset.

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) applications are growing for vision-based volume measurement to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and automation. Despite the growing applications of UAS, no comprehensive dataset is currently available for researchers to determine the effects of visual data collection parameters such as camera angles, image overlaps, and flight patterns, on the outcomes. These outcomes consist of but are not limited to the number of images, the density of point clouds, and the quality of 3D models. This study introduces an annotated UAS dataset to allow researchers and practitioners

Respiration rates and inferred mass-specific field metabolic rates decline with body size among five sympatric cetaceans.

Metabolic rates in animals scale allometrically with body mass, a relationship well-established in terrestrial mammals. Whether these scaling laws apply to fully aquatic mammals remains uncertain, due to key physiological and ecological differences. We estimated field metabolic rates (FMRs) for five sympatric cetaceans of varying sizes, inhabiting sub-Arctic Icelandic waters: harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena; mean body length ± s.d = 1.35 ± 0.19 m), white-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris; 2.42 ± 0.17 m), minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata; 7.53 ±  0.82 m), humpback whales

Kinematic Analysis of the Lower Limb in Uchi-Mata: Comparison Between Elite Athletes Specializing and Non-Specializing.

Background: Uchi-mata is one of the most frequently used throwing techniques in judo, yet little is known about the kinematic factors distinguishing specialists from non-specialists. This study compared lower-limb kinematics during uchi-mata across its three phases in elite judokas. Methods: Forty athletes (12 female, 28 male; 24.5 ± 5.9 years) were classified as specialists (n = 20) or non-specialists (n = 20). Photogrammetry assessed hip, knee, and foot displacement, velocity, acceleration, and timing during the Approach, Turning, and Throw phases. Analyses were performed using mixed-effects

Develop remote orthotic fabrication workflow using 3D modeling and 3D printing technology for carpometacarpal osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis often requires orthotic intervention to reduce pain and improve function. Traditional orthosis fabrication typically demands in-person clinical visits, which can be a barrier to care. PURPOSE: To develop and validate a fully remote workflow for fabricating custom orthoses using mobile 3D scanning, web-based assessment, and 3D printing technologies for patients with CMC osteoarthritis. STUDY DESIGN: Pilot validation study. METHODS: A five-step workflow was created: (1) a web-based application ("Hand Scan") for assessing pain, sensory function,

Facial asymmetry in unilateral coronal synostosis: long-term results after fronto-orbital advancement.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral coronal synostosis causes asymmetry of the forehead and face. The authors set out to document asymmetry and rotation of the middle/lower facial soft tissues using three-dimensional photogrammetry in adolescent and adult patients with unilateral coronal synostosis who underwent correction in infancy. METHODS: All patients older than 10 years who had bilateral fronto-orbital advancement in infancy for nonsyndromic unilateral coronal synostosis were eligible for this study. The following paired anthropometric distances were measured: medial canthus to facial midline distan

Incorporation of 3D stereophotogrammetry as a reliable method for assessing scar volume in standard clinical practice.

Significant disfigurement and dysfunction is caused by hypertrophic scarring, a prevalent complication of burn wounds. A lack of objective tools in the assessment of scar parameters makes evaluation of scar treatment modalities difficult. 3D stereophotogrammetry, obtaining measurements from 3D photographs, represents a method to quantitate scar volume, and a 3D camera may have use in clinical practice. To validate this method, scar models were created and photographed with a 3D camera. Measurements from 3D image analysis of these scar models were compared to physical measurements of scar model

Longitudinal Photogrammetric Analysis of the Columellar-Labial Angle following Primary Repair of Bilateral Cleft Lip and Nasal Deformity.

BACKGROUND: The changing nasolabial dimensions after repair of bilateral cleft lip and nasal deformity can be documented by anthropometry; however, the columellar-labial angle is rarely measured. METHODS: This is a study of white patients who had synchronous repair of bilateral cleft lip performed by one surgeon (J.B.M.). The columellar-labial angle was measured on lateral photographs with the subject in neutral head position. Average values for columellar-labial angle at two or more time points were analyzed with a general estimating equation and cubic modeling. Values for complete and incom

The Accuracy of Conformation of a Generic Surface Mesh for the Analysis of Facial Soft Tissue Changes.

PURPOSE: Three dimensional analysis of the face is required for the assessment of complex changes following surgery, pathological conditions and to monitor facial growth. The most suitable method may be "dense surface correspondence". MATERIALS AND METHODS: This method utilizes a generic facial mesh and "conformation process" to establish anatomical correspondences between two facial images. The aim of this study was to validate the use of conformed meshes to measure simulated maxillary and mandibular surgical movements. The "simulation" was performed by deforming the actual soft tissues of t

Dynamic facial asymmetry in patients with repaired cleft lip using 4D imaging (video stereophotogrammetry).

BACKGROUND: Unilateral cleft lip is a profoundly asymmetrical condition affecting all hard and soft tissue layers from the nose to the upper lip. Although the asymmetry is minimized through cleft lip repair, a degree of asymmetry inevitably persists. Studies investigating asymmetry in patients with cleft lip have used facial measurements, and static 2D and 3D photography. The nose/lip/mouth area, however, is rarely static in our day to day social interactions. METHODS: Non-syndromic patients with cleft lip and palate, and a control group without orofacial clefts underwent 50 frames per second

Assessment of soft tissue facial asymmetry in medically normal and syndrome-affected individuals by analysis of landmarks and measurements.

We investigated soft tissue facial asymmetry in normal and syndrome-affected individuals ranging in age from 1 year to adulthood. The purposes of our study were to determine if facial asymmetry was greater in syndrome-affected individuals than in normal individuals and, if true, to distinguish those measurements that could be used in routine screening to identify the presence of syndromes in uncertain patients and, lastly, to investigate the causes of measurement asymmetry at the level of the landmarks. The last purpose was possible because we used a stereophotogrammetric method with which the
