Evolution of resistance to Rhynchosporium secalis (Oud.) Davis in barley composite cross II.

Changes in resistance to scald disease which occurred in barley composite Cross II over 45 generations were analyzed genetically. This population, which was synthesized in 1929 by pooling equal numbers of f1 seeds from 378 pair wise crosses among 28 barley varieties, has subsequently been grown at Davis, California under standard agricultural conditions without conscious selection. Progenies derived from self-pollinated seeds from random plants taken from four generations (F8, F13, F23, and F45) were tested against four different races of scald (40, 61, 72, and 74), and rated as resistant, sus

Health status, sanitary gaps, and management practices in honey bee colonies within a tropical production system in Colombia.

Honey bees are essential livestock for pollination and agricultural sustainability, but their health and productivity in tropical regions remain incompletely documented. This study assessed the sanitary and productive status of managed honey bee colonies in the Cauca Department, Colombia, using a One Health approach. A total of 77 apiaries were monitored across two seasons to evaluate management practices, colony strength, sanitary deficiencies, Varroa mites' infestation rates, and the presence of pesticide residues in bee bread. Beekeeping in the territory was predominantly small-scale and fa

Seasonal Stability Assessment of Reference Genes for Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction Normalization in Bombus terrestris.

Bumblebees (B. terrestris) play a crucial role as highly efficient biological agents in commercial pollination. Understanding the molecular mechanisms governing their adaptation to diverse seasonal environments may pave the way for effective management strategies in the future. With the burgeoning advancement in post-genetic studies focusing on B. terrestris, there is a critical need to normalize quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) data using suitable reference genes. To address this necessity, we employed RefFinder, a software-based tool, to assess the suitability of several candidate endoge

A novel free-air diesel and ozone enrichment (FADOE) research platform.

Air pollution is an escalating concern in the modern world, posing substantial threats to ecosystem processes. While the importance of comprehending the impact of pollutants on natural environments is evident, conducting rigorous field-based experiments presents formidable challenges. Elevating pollutant concentrations within open air environments in a controlled manner is complex. Nonetheless, such real-world experiments are invaluable for revealing the genuine influence of air pollutants on ecosystems and their functioning. Field-scale measurements have emerged as a pivotal avenue for advanc

Loss-of-Function of a Tomato Receptor-Like Kinase Impairs Male Fertility and Induces Parthenocarpic Fruit Set.

Parthenocarpy arises when an ovary develops into fruit without pollination/fertilization. The mechanisms involved in genetic parthenocarpy have attracted attention because of their potential application in plant breeding and also for their elucidation of the mechanisms involved in early fruit development. We have isolated and characterized a novel small parthenocarpic fruit and flower (spff) mutant in the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cultivar Micro-Tom. This plant showed both vegetative and reproductive phenotypes including dwarfism of floral organs, male sterility, delayed flowering, altered

Population demography of Australian feral bees (Apis mellifera).

Honey-bees are widespread as feral animals in Australia. Their impact on Australian ecosystems is difficult to assess, but may include competition with native fauna for floral resources or nesting sites, or inadequate or inappropriate pollination of native flora. In this 3-year study we examined the demography of the feral bee population in the riparian woodland of Wyperfeld National Park in north-west Victoria. The population is very large but varied considerably in size (50-150 colonies/km2) during the study period (1992-1995). The expected colony lifespan for an established colony is 6.6 ye

Allergenic pollens in the southern Mediterranean area.

In the Mediterranean area there are characteristic climatic conditions (mildness of winter, summer dryness, etc.) that facilitate the growing of a typical vegetation with production of allergenic pollen, such as those from Parietaria and Olea europaea, very different from that of central and northern Europe. We present in this article the results of an 8-year pollen count in the atmosphere of Naples, Italy. The pollen content was examined with a volumetric spore trap (Lanzoni VPPS-2000) like that of Hirst. The results of the pollen counts were subsequently compared with results of skin tests o

Arabidopsis leucine-rich repeat malectin receptor-like kinases regulate pollen-stigma interactions.

Flowering plants contain tightly controlled pollen-pistil interactions required for promoting intraspecific fertilization and preventing interspecific hybridizations. In Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), several receptor kinases (RKs) are known to regulate the later stages of intraspecific pollen tube growth and ovular reception in the pistil, but less is known about RK regulation of the earlier stages. The Arabidopsis RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE IN FLOWERS1 (RKF1)/RKF1-LIKE (RKFL) 1-3 cluster of 4 leucine-rich repeat malectin (LRR-MAL) RKs was previously found to function in the stigma to promote

Honeybees Produce Millimolar Concentrations of Non-Neuronal Acetylcholine for Breeding: Possible Adverse Effects of Neonicotinoids.

The worldwide use of neonicotinoid pesticides has caused concern on account of their involvement in the decline of bee populations, which are key pollinators in most ecosystems. Here we describe a role of non-neuronal acetylcholine (ACh) for breeding of Apis mellifera carnica and a so far unknown effect of neonicotinoids on non-target insects. Royal jelly or larval food are produced by the hypopharyngeal gland of nursing bees and contain unusually high ACh concentrations (4-8 mM). ACh is extremely well conserved in royal jelly or brood food because of the acidic pH of 4.0. This condition prote

Metatranscriptome Analysis of Fig Flowers Provides Insights into Potential Mechanisms for Mutualism Stability and Gall Induction.

A striking property of the mutualism between figs and their pollinating wasps is that wasps consistently oviposit in the inner flowers of the fig syconium, which develop into galls that house developing larvae. Wasps typically do not use the outer ring of flowers, which develop into seeds. To better understand differences between gall and seed flowers, we used a metatranscriptomic approach to analyze eukaryotic gene expression within fig flowers at the time of oviposition choice and early gall development. Consistent with the unbeatable seed hypothesis, we found significant differences in gene

Nano-enabled agrochemicals as ecological technologies: Ecotoxicity, non-target effects, and a safe-and-sustainable-by-design framework.

Nanofertilizers and nanopesticides provide significant agricultural benefits through enhanced nutrient efficiency and reduced pesticide application; however, their nanoscale properties raise environmental safety concerns. As emerging ecological technologies designed to minimize environmental footprints, these nano-enabled agrochemicals require systematic safety evaluation. However, conventional ecotoxicity tests-designed for soluble chemicals-cannot adequately capture nanoparticle stability, aggregation, or time-dependent exposure, creating a 'measurement gap' in risk assessment. This review s

Sensing volatiles throughout the body: geographic- and tissue-specific olfactory receptor expression in the fig wasp.

An essential adaptive strategy in insects is the evolution of olfactory receptors (ORs) to recognize important volatile environmental chemical cues. Our model species, Ceratosolen fusciceps, a specialist wasp pollinator of Ficus racemosa, likely possesses an OR repertoire that allows it to distinguish fig-specific volatiles in highly variable environments. Using a newly assembled genome-guided transcriptome, we annotated 63 ORs in the species and reconstructed the phylogeny of Ceratosolen ORs in conjunction with other hymenopteran species. Expression analysis showed that though ORs were mainly

Effects of Florivory on Floral Visitors and Reproductive Success of Sagittaria lancifolia (Alismataceae) in a Mexican Wetland.

Florivores consume floral structures with negative effects on plant fitness and pollinator attraction. Several studies have evaluated these consequences in hermaphroditic plants, but little is known about the effects on monoecious and dioecious species. We characterize the florivory and its effects on floral visitors and reproductive success in a monoecious population of Sagittaria lancifolia. Five categories of florivory were established according to the petal area consumed. Visits were recorded in male and female flowers within the different damage categories. Reproductive success was evalua

From molecules to organisms: A multi-level approach shows negative effects of trace elements from sewage sludge used as soil improver on honeybees.

The use of sewage sludge as a soil improver has been promoted in agroecosystems. However, sludges can contain toxic trace elements because of suboptimal wastewater treatment. Nonetheless, field studies investigating the negative effects of these practices on pollinators are lacking. We collected honeybees from an area where sewage sludge use is widespread, and one where it is precluded. Trace elements in soils and bees were quantified. Cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and nickel were investigated because they were the least correlated elements to each other and are known to be toxic. Their le

Genomic divergence between two sister Ostrya species through linked selection and recombination.

Studying the evolution of genomic divergence between lineages is a topical issue in evolutionary biology. However, the evolutionary forces that shape the heterogeneous divergence of the genomic landscape are still poorly understood. Here, two wind-pollinated sister-species (Ostrya japonica and O. chinensis) are used to explore what these potential forces might be. A total of 40 individuals from 16 populations across their main distribution areas in China were sampled for genome-wide resequencing. Population demography analyses revealed that these two sister-species diverged at 3.06-4.43 Mya. B

Acute thiamethoxam toxicity in honeybees is not enhanced by common fungicide and herbicide and lacks stress-induced changes in mRNA splicing.

Securing food supply for a growing population is a major challenge and heavily relies on the use of agrochemicals to maximize crop yield. It is increasingly recognized, that some neonicotinoid insecticides have a negative impact on non-target organisms, including important pollinators such as the European honeybee Apis mellifera. Toxicity of neonicotinoids may be enhanced through simultaneous exposure with additional pesticides, which could help explain, in part, the global decline of honeybee colonies. Here we examined whether exposure effects of the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam on bee viabilit

Rising Out of the Ashes: Additive Genetic Variation for Crown and Collar Resistance to Hymenoscyphus fraxineus in Fraxinus excelsior.

Since the early 1990s, ash dieback due to the invasive ascomycete Hymenoscyphus fraxineus is threatening Fraxinus excelsior in most of its natural range. Previous studies reported significant levels of genetic variability in susceptibility in F. excelsior either in field or inoculation experiments. The present study was based on a field experiment planted in 1995, 15 years before onset of the disease. Crown and collar status were monitored on 777 trees from 23 open-pollinated progenies originating from three French provenances. Health status was modeled using a Bayesian approach where spatiote

One proboscis, two tasks: adaptations to blood-feeding and nectar-extracting in long-proboscid horse flies (Tabanidae, Philoliche).

Female Pangoniinae in the tabanid fly genus Philoliche can display remarkably elongated proboscis lengths, which are adapted for both blood- and nectar-feeding. Apart from their role as blood-sucking pests, they represent important pollinators of the South African flora. This study examines the morphology of the feeding apparatus of two species of long-proboscid Tabanidae: Philoliche rostrata and Philoliche gulosa - both species display adaptations for feeding from a diverse guild of long-tubed flowers, and on vertebrate blood. The heavily sclerotised proboscis can be divided into two function
