A novel genotype of Hantaan orthohantavirus harbored by Apodemus agrarius chejuensis as a potential etiologic agent of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Republic of Korea.

BACKGROUND: Orthohantaviruses, causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome, pose a significant public health threat worldwide. Despite the significant mortality and morbidity, effective antiviral therapeutics for orthohantavirus infections are currently unavailable. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of HFRS-associated orthohantaviruses and identify the etiological agent of orthohantavirus outbreaks in southern Republic of Korea (ROK). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We collected small mammals on Jeju Island during 2018-2020. We det

Neurophysiological analytics for all! Free open-source software tools for documenting, analyzing, visualizing, and sharing using electronic notebooks.

Neurophysiology requires an extensive workflow of information analysis routines, which often includes incompatible proprietary software, introducing limitations based on financial costs, transfer of data between platforms, and the ability to share. An ecosystem of free open-source software exists to fill these gaps, including thousands of analysis and plotting packages written in Python and R, which can be implemented in a sharable and reproducible format, such as the Jupyter electronic notebook. This tool chain can largely replace current routines by importing data, producing analyses, and ge

Surgical anatomy of the innervation of the major duodenal papilla in human and Suncus murinus, from the perspective of preserving innervation in organ-saving procedures.

OBJECTIVES: Few studies have focused on the detailed surgical anatomy of the innervation of the major duodenal papillary region, especially in relation to duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection (DPPHR) and its modified procedures, which is crucial to preserving the innervation of the papillary region. The aim of this study is to clarify the neural distribution of the major duodenal papilla in humans. METHODS: The pancreas, duodenum, and surrounding structures were dissected in 10 cadavers and immersed in a 0.001% solution of alizarin red S in ethanol to stain the peripheral nerves. The

Detection and identification of rabies and rabies-related viruses using rapid-cycle PCR.

The rapid identification of suspect rabies infection is essential in human cases, to ensure appropriate post-exposure treatment of contacts, and in animal cases to allow specific control strategies to be decided and implemented. We describe here the use of high speed air thermo-cycler PCR as a diagnostic tool for the detection of rabies and rabies-related viruses. Using this technique we were able to diagnose rabies in a human within 5 h. Furthermore, the application of automated sequencing of the resultant product enabled a definitive characterisation of classical rabies within 16 h. The util

An Ecological Survey of Chiggers (Acariformes: Trombiculidae) Associated with Small Mammals in an Epidemic Focus of Scrub Typhus on the China-Myanmar Border in Southwest China.

Chiggers (chigger mites) are a group of tiny arthropods, and they are the exclusive vector of Orientia tsutsugamushi (Ot), the causative agent of scrub typhus (tsutsugamushi disease). Dehong Prefecture in Yunnan Province of southwest China is located on the China-Myanmar border and is an important focus of scrub typhus. Based on the field surveys in Dehong between 2008 and 2022, the present paper reports the infestation and ecological distribution of chiggers on the body surface of rodents and other sympatric small mammals (shrews, tree shrews, etc.) in the region for the first time. The role of the locus coeruleus in giant migrating contractions of colonic motility in Suncus murinus.

Colonic contraction motility, composed of colonic motor complexes (CMCs) and giant migrating contractions (GMCs), is regulated through the coordinated integration of hormonal signals, the nervous system and intraluminal cues. Abnormalities in colonic function and motility can result in conditions such as constipation or diarrhea. It is believed that brain regions involved in regulating colonic motility play a role in colonic dysfunction observed under stress conditions and in Parkinson's disease. However, the detailed central mechanisms underlying colonic motility regulation remain unclear. Th

A five-year perspective on the situation of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and status of the hantavirus reservoirs in Europe, 2005-2010.

Hantavirus infections are reported from many countries in Europe and with highly variable annual case numbers. In 2010, more than 2,000 human cases were reported in Germany, and numbers above the baseline have also been registered in other European countries. Depending on the virus type human infections are characterised by mild to severe forms of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. The member laboratories of the European Network for diagnostics of Imported Viral Diseases present here an overview of the progression of human cases in the period from 2005 to 2010. Further we provide an updat

[Update on plague in Madagascar].

After a thirty year period of successful control, bubonic plague showed the first signs of return in Madagascar where a fatal outbreak occurred in Antananarivo in 1978. A second outbreak was observed in Mahajanga in 1991 after more than a half century. In 1997, 459 confirmed or presumptive cases were reported, as compared to 150 to 250 cases during the last years. However the actual extent of this recrudescence must be placed in the perspective of a more efficient control program that has led to better reporting of suspected cases and availability of more accurate diagnostic techniques. Does motilin primarily regulate gastrointestinal motility in fish?

Motilin (MLN) is a gut motility-stimulating peptide hormone that regulates the gastric migrating motor complex in humans, dogs, monkeys, and house musk shrews (Suncus). MLN and its receptors are found not only in mammals but also in other vertebrates (birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish). This review focuses on the physiological roles of MLN in fish. Fish MLNs are produced in the mucosa of the upper small intestine. MLNs in amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are 22-amino-acid peptides with phenylalanine at the first position of the N-terminus, except for reptile MLNs. In contrast, fish

First detected case of rabbit Haemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2) in the Irish hare (Lepus timidus hibernicus).

BACKGROUND: Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is a Lagovirus, a subgroup of the family Caliciviridae. RHDV2 is a variant first described in France in 2010, and has since spread globally. It has been reported in several Lagomorph species (rabbits, hares, and their relatives) as well as other mammals including voles and shrews. The disease has raised international concerns for its potential impact on population abundance trajectories, particularly as 25% of Lagomorphs are currently Red-Listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Irish hare (Lepus timidus h

An ancient alpharetrovirus lineage in bats: Evolutionary insights and possible roles in reproduction.

Alpharetroviruses are an important group of pathogens known to cause leukemias and tumors, and were historically considered to be restricted to avian hosts. The identification of alpharetrovirus-like envelopes in bat genomes has hinted at a potentially wider host range, although their relations to modern alpharetroviruses and distribution remains unclear. Through a paleovirological screening of 818 vertebrate genomes we identified CHIRalphaEnv, a lineage that belongs firmly within alpharetroviruses, and emerged from a cross-class transmission from saurian hosts. We determine that CHIRalphaEnv

Animal models of human herpesvirus infection.

Human herpesvirus, a specific group within the herpesvirus family, is responsible for a variety of human diseases. These viruses can infect humans and other vertebrates, primarily targeting the skin, mucous membranes, and neural tissues, thereby significantly impacting the health of both humans and animals. Animal models are crucial for studying virus pathogenesis, vaccine development, and drug testing. Despite several vaccine candidates being in preclinical and clinical stages, no vaccines are current available to prevent lifelong infections caused by these human herpesviruses, except for var

Antibiotic resistance genes of public health importance in livestock and humans in an informal urban community in Nepal.

Efforts to mitigate the increasing emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will benefit from a One Health perspective, as over half of animal antimicrobials are also considered medically important in humans, and AMR can be maintained in the environment. This is especially pertinent to low- and middle-income countries and in community settings, where an estimated 80% of all antibiotics are used. This study features AMR genes found among humans, animals, and water at an urban informal settlement in Nepal with intensifying livestock production. We sampled humans, chickens, ducks, swine, and w

Why Lyme disease is common in the northern US, but rare in the south: The roles of host choice, host-seeking behavior, and tick density.

Lyme disease is common in the northeastern United States, but rare in the southeast, even though the tick vector is found in both regions. Infection prevalence of Lyme spirochetes in host-seeking ticks, an important component to the risk of Lyme disease, is also high in the northeast and northern midwest, but declines sharply in the south. As ticks must acquire Lyme spirochetes from infected vertebrate hosts, the role of wildlife species composition on Lyme disease risk has been a topic of lively academic discussion. We compared tick-vertebrate host interactions using standardized sampling met

PCR-based screening and phylogenetic analysis of rat pegivirus (RPgV) carried by rodents in China.

Rodent-borne pegiviruses were initially identified in serum samples from desert wood-rats in 2013, and subsequently in serum samples from commensal rats in 2014. However, the prevalence and phylogenetic characteristics of rodent pegiviruses in China are poorly understood. In this study, we screened serum samples collected from wild rats in southern China between 2015 and 2016 for the presence of rat pegivirus (RPgV) by PCR. Among the 314 serum samples from murine rodents (Rattus norvegicus, Rattus tanezumi, and Rattus losea) and house shrews (Suncus murinus), 21.66% (68/314) tested positive fo

Occurrence and transmission efficiencies of Borrelia burgdorferi ospC types in avian and mammalian wildlife.

Borrelia burgdorferi s.s., the bacterium that causes Lyme disease in North America, circulates among a suite of vertebrate hosts and their tick vector. The bacterium can be differentiated at the outer surface protein C (ospC) locus into 25 genotypes. Wildlife hosts can be infected with a suite of ospC types but knowledge on the transmission efficiencies of these naturally infected hosts to ticks is still lacking. To evaluate the occupancy and detection of ospC types in wildlife hosts, we adapted a likelihood-based species patch occupancy model to test for the occurrence probabilities (ψ - "occ
