Hepatic microsomal cytochrome P450 system during experimental hookworm infection.

Experimental infection of golden hamsters with the hookworm, Ancylostoma ceylanicum, caused a profound decline in the hepatic microsomal cytochrome P450 content. Concomitant decrease was also noticed in aminopyrine N-demethylase and benzo[a]pyrene hydroxylase activities. However, aniline hydroxylase activity was only marginally elevated during the infection. Microsomal markers, viz., cytochrome b5, NADH-cytochrome-c reductase, and glucose-6-phosphatase, were not significantly altered. Hepatic tissue exhibited an accumulation of lipids, especially phospholipids, triglycerides, and cholesterol,

Neuromuscular blockade: the effects on two hippocampal RSA (theta) systems and neocortical desynchronization.

Neocortical and hippocampal electroencephalographic (EEG) activity were recorded from rats during: (a) spontaneous activities, (b) paralysis produced by curare or gallamine neuromuscular blockade, and (c) urethane anesthesia. All of the patterns of EEG recorded from normal rats were obtained from paralyzed rats including: (a) atropine resistant neocortical desynchronization and fast (6--12 Hz) hippocampal rhythmical slow activity (RSA) normally associated with overt Type I or voluntary movement, (b) atropine sensitive and urethane resistant slow (4--6 Hz) RSA which can be recorded from immobil

Deciphering In Vitro and In Vivo Pharmacological Properties of Seed and Fruit Extracts of Flacourtia jangomas (Lour.) Raeusch.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the pharmacological properties of the methanolic extract of Flacourtia jangomas (Lour.) Raeusch fruits (PFJM) and seeds (SFJM), along with their soluble fractions in ethyl acetate (fruit: PFJE; seed: SFJE) and chloroform (fruit: PFJC; seed: SFJC). Our phytochemical analysis of the examined extracts confirmed the presence of various therapeutically active phytoconstituents, including flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, and alkaloids. Employing the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical quenching method, SFJC exhibited the highest antioxidative poten

Continuous intracisternal and high cervical intrathecal bupivacaine analgesia in refractory head and neck pain.

BACKGROUND: The upper cervical component of the spinomesencephalic tract and cranial nerves V, VII (nervus intermedius), IX, and X are involved in mechanisms of acute and chronic pain from head and neck structures. To date there is no reliable method for relief of refractory pain (i.e., pain that cannot be relieved by conventional pharmacologic therapies) from these structures. Therefore, we explored continuous intracisternal infusion of bupivacaine for the treatment of refractory pain of the head and neck. METHODS: Intracisternal catheters were inserted in 13 adults with refractory nonmalign

[Progressive supranuclear palsy].

Progressive supranuclear palsy, first described as clinical entity by Steele, Richardson and Olszewski, is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Besides progressive supranuclear oculomotor disturbances, other characteristic signs are pseudobulbar paresis, axial rigidity, gait disturbances and subcortical dementia. Misinterpretation in the early stage as Parkinson's disease is frequently seen. A causal therapy is still missing.

[Facial paraspasm].

Thirty-two patients with facial paraspasm were subjected to comprehensive examination with the use of psychometric and electropolygraphic methods, with the brain awake and asleep. On the basis of the results obtained the author considers clinical differential diagnostic criteria, as well a possible neurodynamic substrate of the above syndrome. Many levels of the nervous system, particularly nonspecific formations of pontomesencephalic portions of the brain stem closely linked with subcortical and rhinencephalic structures, are involved in ensuring this substrate.

Respiratory complications and their management in motor neuron disease.

Although respiratory insufficiency is common in the advanced stages of motor neuron disease, some patients may develop distressing respiratory symptoms early in the course of the disease or even present with respiratory failure or arrest. We describe 14 patients with motor neuron disease who were considered for respiratory support; 11 received such support and all derived significant symptomatic improvement without distressing prolongation of life. Of the 8 patients with typical features of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, 7 had predominant diaphragm weakness and 1 generalized respiratory muscle

How once-nightly sodium oxybate is processed in the body in healthy volunteers: a plain language summary.

WHAT IS THIS SUMMARY ABOUT?: This is a plain language summary of an article originally published in the journal Sleep Medicine. Narcolepsy is a sleep condition in which people have periods of extreme sleepiness during the day. People with narcolepsy may also have symptoms of muscle weakness (cataplexy); seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, or feeling something that seems real but isn't actually there before falling asleep or while waking up (hallucinations); an inability to move before falling asleep or while waking up (sleep paralysis); and poor sleep at night. Sodium oxybate (SXB for short) h

Laryngeal Symptoms in Anti-IgLON5 Disease: Case Reports and a Systematic Review of Airway Management and Recommendations.

Anti-IgLON5 disease, a rare neuroimmunological disorder, frequently manifests with aerodigestive symptoms such as dysphagia, dysarthria, acute respiratory failure, and eventually death. The Anti-IgLON5 disease is under-recongnized in the field of otolaryngology. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is to summarize the current literature on airway management in Anti-IgLON5 disease, a potentially life-threatening condition, and present two cases that highlight the critical importance of early recognition and intervention for laryngeal symptoms. A comprehensive search of PubMed/MEDLINE fo

The Diagnostic Spectrum of Sexual Hallucinations.

Sexual hallucinations are little known, yet often extremely burdening, phenomena. In this systematic review, we summarize what is known about their phenomenology, prevalence, etiopathology, ensuing distress, and treatment options. Sexual hallucinations can be experienced as genital or orgasmic sensations, although other sensory modalities can also be involved. With the notable exception of orgasmic auras in the context of epilepsy, sexual hallucinations tend to be distressing and embarrassing in nature. Our analysis of 79 studies (together describing 390 patients) indicates that sexual halluci

Neuropsychological Alterations in Narcolepsy with Cataplexy and the Expression of Cognitive Deficits.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of our study was to assess attention processes and executive function in patients with narcolepsy with cataplexy (NT1). To do so, we compared the results with those of a control group from the general population using an extensive neuropsychological test battery. METHODS: We studied 28 patients with NT1 and 28 healthy control participants matched for age, gender, and educational level. They all completed questionnaires on sleepiness, anxiety, and depression symptoms. In addition, they underwent neuropsychological tests. The ability to maintain attention was assessed

[A case of an anti-Ma2 antibody-positive patient presenting with variable CNS symptoms mimicking multiple system atrophy with a partial response to immunotherapy].

A 70-year-old man with a 5-month history of progressive bradykinesia of the bilateral lower extremities was admitted to our hospital. At the age of 64, he underwent proximal gastrectomy for gastric cancer. He also had a history of subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord since the age of 67, which was successfully treated with vitamin B12 therapy. Four weeks before admission to our hospital, he admitted himself to his former hospital complaining of walking difficulty. Two weeks later, however, his symptoms progressed rapidly; he was immobilized for two weeks and did not respond to the

THE ACTION OF SODIUM 4-HYDROXYBUTYRATE ON SPINAL REFLEXES.

The actions of sodium 4-hydroxybutyrate, gamma-aminobutyric acid and meprobamate have been studied in unanaesthetized animals, in local anaesthetic tests, on isolated organ preparations, on convulsions induced by picrotoxin and strychnine, and on monosynaptic (patellar) and polysynaptic (plantar) reflexes of the spinal cord. Sodium 4-hydroxybutyrate induced a sleep-like state with three unusual features: the righting reflex was remarkably persistent, respiration was good throughout and recovery was abrupt. gamma-Aminobutyric acid was inactive and meprobamate caused flaccid paralysis with loss
