Assessing green space exposure: From traditional metrics to the Green Exposure Index (GEI) with application to a Northern Italy residential dataset.

Urban green areas contribute to healthier cities by improving air quality, promoting physical activity and social cohesion, and mitigating the urban heat island effect. However, assessing exposure to green spaces remains a key methodological challenge in epidemiologic research. In this study, we compared traditional green space indices and developed a composite Green Exposure Index (GEI) integrating vegetation cover, density and accessibility to improve exposure assessment. We applied this new index in a population based amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) case-control dataset from a Northern

The evolutionary origin of the collective unconscious and the appeal of research on Neanderthals and other ancient humans.

Why does research on Neanderthals attract public attention far beyond its immediate scientific relevance? Such fascination may reflect more than intellectual curiosity; it may involve the activation of deep symbolic structures that Carl Jung termed the collective unconscious. Integrating evolutionary biology, genomics, paleoanthropology, and psychology, I address a question Jung did not explicitly pose: when, along the human evolution, did the collective unconscious originate? I argue that this structure emerged gradually rather than suddenly. Homo erectus established a cognitive floor charact

Food Insecurity and Housing Insecurity Associated With Decreased Sleep Regularity in Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: While disparities in adolescent sleep health are well recognized, few studies focus on sleep regularity, a sleep parameter associated with negative physical and mental health consequences. This study aimed to evaluate the association between socio-contextual factors and sleep regularity in healthy adolescents recruited from primary care. METHODS: Data were derived from the baseline assessment for a pilot clinical trial that investigated a digital sleep intervention for teens aged 12 to 14. Socio-contextual factors included cut-off utilities, food insecurity, housing insecurity, nei

Black men's awareness of peripheral artery disease and acceptability of screening in barbershops: a qualitative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) disproportionately burdens Black Americans, particularly Black men. Despite the significant prevalence and high rate of associated morbidity and mortality, awareness of and treatment initiation for PAD remains low in this demographic group. Given the well-established social cohesion among barbershops frequently attended by Black men, barbershops may be ideal settings for health screening and education to improve awareness, early detection, and treatment initiation of PAD among Black men. METHODS: A qualitative study involving 1:1 participant inter

Toward an integrated approach for mental health and psychosocial support and peacebuilding in North-East Nigeria: programme description and preliminary outcomes from 'Counselling on Wheels'.

BACKGROUND: Despite theoretical support for including mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) with peacebuilding, few programmes in conflict-affected regions fully integrate these approaches. AIMS: To describe and assess preliminary outcomes of the Counselling on Wheels programme delivered by the NEEM Foundation in the Borno State of North-East Nigeria. METHOD: We first describe the components of the Counselling on Wheels programme, including education and advocacy for peace and social cohesion through community peacebuilding partnerships and activities, and an MHPSS intervention open

Court-based participatory research: collaborating with the justice system to enhance sexual health services for vulnerable women in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Although jail screening programs have an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmissible infections (STI) and HIV among incarcerated individuals, many arrestees are not screened before release. Justice-involved women are at particularly high risk for these conditions because of individual risk behaviour as well as other network-level risk factors. Court-based programs could provide a critical bridge between these women, STI risk counselling and health services. This formative study explored the features of a program that would encourage STI testing among cou

Interrelatedness of child health, protection and well-being: an application of the SAFE model in Rwanda.

This study examines the core components of children's basic security and well-being in order to examine issues central to improving child protection in Rwanda. Sources of data included 15 focus groups with adults, 7 focus groups with children ages 10-17, and 11 key informant interviews with child protection stakeholders, including representatives from international NGOs, community-based groups, and the Rwandan Government, all of which took place in April and May of 2010. Participants painted a complex picture of threats to children's basic security in Rwanda. Three key themes were pervasive ac

Development of prison-based parent-child joint intervention for incarcerated fathers: protocol for mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Paternal incarceration represents a significant stressor that disrupts family cohesion, undermines paternal identity and adversely affects children's psychosocial well-being. While family-focused programmes show promise in improving outcomes for incarcerated parents and their children, culturally attuned prison-based parenting interventions remain underdeveloped and scarce, particularly in Asian contexts. To address this gap, a local parenting intervention grounded in the Double ABCX model of family resilience, the 'Be My Hero' programme, was designed for incarcerated fathers in

Food Insecurity, Housing Instability, and Neighborhood Context: Pathways to Adolescent Mental Health.

PURPOSE: Adolescent mental health challenges in the United States have reached critical levels. This is a sensitive developmental period during which exposure to household-level hardships, such as food insecurity and housing instability, and adverse neighborhood environments may heighten vulnerability to mental, emotional, developmental, and behavioral health (MEDBH). This study examined the pathways through which household-level and neighborhood factors influence adolescent MEDBH. METHODS: Using cross-sectional data from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health, logistic regression mode

Social capital and community resilience to socio-natural hazards in informal settlements of Chile's extractive north: city of Copiapó, Atacama region, Chile.

Informal settlements in Chile's extractive cities concentrate structural vulnerability and exposure to multiple socio-natural hazards, including mass movement processes, flooding, and fires, among others. The article asks: how do different forms of social capital translate into differentiated capacities for resilience (coping, adaptive, transformative) in the face of the hazards confronting informal settlements in the mining city of Copiapó, Atacama Region? The discussion combines research methods applying semi-structured interviews with community leaders and institutional actors, and particip

Surviving and thriving in spite of hate: Burnout and resiliency in clinicians working with patients attracted by violent extremism.

Violent extremism (VE) is often manifested through hate discourses, which are hurtful for their targets, shatter social cohesion, and provoke feelings of impending threat. In a clinical setting, these discourses may affect clinicians in different ways, eroding their capacity to provide care. This clinical article describes the subjective experiences and the coping strategies of clinicians engaged with individuals attracted by VE. A focus group was held with eight clinicians and complemented with individual interviews and field notes. Clinicians reported four categories of personal consequences

Self-management interventions for chronic widespread pain including fibromyalgia: a systematic review and qualitative evidence synthesis.

Supporting behavioural self-management is increasingly important in the care for chronic widespread pain (CWP), including fibromyalgia. Understanding peoples' experiences of these interventions may elucidate processes and mechanisms that lead to or hinder their intended impact. We conducted a systematic review and thematic synthesis of qualitative studies exploring peoples' experiences of self-management interventions for CWP, including fibromyalgia. MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science were searched. Primary qualitative or mixed-methods studies were included if they explored

Can we use epigenetics to prime chemoresistant lymphomas?

BACKGROUND: Positive parent-teen and peer relationships are crucial support resources for adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). There is quite a bit of research on parent-teen relationships in Western countries, less so with peer relationships. Additionally, information on these relationships and their influencing factors among adolescents from other regions with different family culture and peer cohesion is limited, which impedes the development of targeted interventions. METHODS: This study analyzed baseline data from a randomized controlled trial in China involving 122 adolesce

Protective Factors for Psychotic Symptoms Among Poly-victimized Children.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing victimization in early life has been repeatedly shown to be associated with the emergence of psychotic symptoms in childhood. However, most victimized children do not develop psychotic symptoms and why this occurs is not fully understood. This study investigated which individual, family-level, and wider community characteristics were associated with an absence of psychotic symptoms among children at risk for psychosis by virtue of their exposure to multiple victimization experiences (poly-victimization). METHODS: Participants were from the Environmental Risk Longitudi

One-Year Comparison of a Community-Based Exercise Program Versus a Day Hospital-Based Exercise Program on Quality of Life and Mental Health in Severely Burned Children.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of long-term psychosocial functioning and mental health of a "day hospital"-based exercise program (DAYEX) versus a community-based exercise program (COMBEX). DESIGN: A prospective design that consisted of 2 groups (DAYEX and COMBEX). SETTING: A children's hospital specialized in burn care. PARTICIPANTS: Patients (N=18; DAYEX [n=9], COMBEX [n=9]) were assessed at intensive care unit discharge and up to 1 year postburn. INTERVENTIONS: The Child Health Questionnaires (CHQ-Child Form [CHQ-CF87] and CHQ-Parent Form [CHQ-PF28]) were used to assess changes in qu

Positive family relationships: Longitudinal network of relations.

The construct of positive family relationships (PFR), defined as family members getting along well and supporting each other, was investigated in a long-term prospective study. A newly constructed scale of positive family relationships developed using the nominal response model of item-response theory, was subject to a longitudinal network of relations analysis. The conceptualization for this research was founded on a positive psychology framework. Data derived from the Fullerton Longitudinal Study and spanned 20 years from middle childhood (age 9 years) to early adulthood (age 29 years). Evid

A review of family and environmental correlates of health behaviors in high-risk youth.

Disparities in the prevalence of obesity in youth place minority and low socioeconomic status youth at increased risk for the development of chronic disease, such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Contributing factors to the increases in obesity include a decline in positive health behaviors, such as making healthy dietary choices, engaging in physical activity, and limiting sedentary behaviors. Family and physical environmental contextual factors related to health behaviors are increasingly the focus of health behavior interventions in line with the bioecological model that encourage

HIV Prevalence, Virological Suppression, and Consistent Condom Use Among Social Venue-Going Men in Zimbabwe: Insights from the 2022 Priorities for Local AIDS Control Efforts (PLACE) Surveys.

Men attending social venues face barriers to accessing HIV prevention and care services. These venues-such as bars, guesthouses, nightclubs, and transport hubs-facilitate new sexual partnerships but lack cohesive social networks, making it challenging to design and implement effective HIV prevention strategies. Men who attend social venues are more likely to pay for sex, potentially increasing their risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV. However, data on how HIV-related behaviours and service engagement differ between men who do and do not pay for sex among those attending venues remain limite
