Comparative Proteomic Analysis of Roots from a Wild Eggplant Species Solanum sisymbriifolium in Defense Response to Verticillium dahliae Inoculation.

Eggplant verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium spp., is a severe eggplant vascular disease. Solanum sisymbriifolium, a wild species of eggplant that is resistant to verticillium wilt, will be beneficial for genetically modifying eggplants. To better reveal the response of wild eggplant to verticillium wilt, proteomic analysis by iTRAQ technique was performed on roots of S. sisymbriifolium after exposure to Verticillium dahliae, and some selected proteins were also validated using parallel reaction monitoring (PRM). After inoculation with V. dahliae, the phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) an

Research note: Interactive influence of phytate-phosphorus and phytase on calcium utilization in broiler chickens fed potato protein-based basal diets.

Through formation of calcium-phytate chelates, dietary phytate-P (PP) can influence the extra-phosphoric effects of phytase on calcium (Ca) utilization. Calcium utilization changes in the absence or presence of PP and without or with added phytase in broiler chicken diets were investigated in a study that used 320 male broiler chickens and offered experimental diets based on potato protein concentrate from d 18 to 21 post hatching. Diets were nutrient-adequate positive control (4.8 g non-PP/kg; 0 g PP/kg) and 2 nutrient-reduced (2.8 g non-PP/kg) containing either 0 or 4.4 g PP/kg solely from r

Potato protein hydrolysate (PP902) inhibits dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy by regulating MuRF1 and MAFbx expression in C2C12 myotubes in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Skeletal muscle atrophy occurs when muscle mass and strength decrease due to aging, starvation, cancer, and cachectic diseases. Recently, an increasing focus has been on investigating potato protein's nutritional and functional properties and its wide-ranging applications. Steroids, especially glucocorticoids, have been extensively examined and found to cause muscle atrophy. Recently, we found that PP902 prevents hyperglycemia-induced muscle atrophy in cultured myotubes, although its impact on steroid-induced muscle atrophy remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigat

Exploring the antagonistic mechanism of Bacillus atrophaeus CY1 for the biological control of potato common scab.

Streptomyces scabies is a pathogenic actinomycete that infects potato crops and commonly causes scab-like lesions on potato tubers. Screening of strains antagonistic towards S. scabies in the natural environment was performed in this study. This study focused on the extraction of antibacterial substances and changes in potato defense enzymes and the rhizosphere microbiota. Together, these factors constitute biological control mechanisms. Pot experiments showed that Bacillus atrophaeus CY1 reduced the infection of scabs caused by S. scabies from 92 % to 60 % and the disease index from 62 % to 2

Ultrasensitive immunosensor for acrylamide based on chitosan/SnO2-SiC hollow sphere nanochains/gold nanomaterial as signal amplification.

An electrochemical immunosensor for ultrasensitive detection of acrylamide (AA) in water and food samples was developed. SnO2-SiC hollow sphere nanochains with high surface area and gold nanoparticles with good electroconductivity were fabricated onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode pre-coated with chitosan. The coating antigen (AA-4-mercaptophenylacetic acid-ovalbumin conjugate, AA-4-MPA-OVA) was immobilized on the electrode. Polyclonal antibody specific for AA-4-MPA was conjugated to gold nanorod (AuNR) as primary antibody (AuNR-Ab1). Horseradish peroxidase labelled anti-rabbit anti

Efficacies of quorum sensing inhibitors, piericidin A and glucopiericidin A, produced by Streptomyces xanthocidicus KPP01532 for the control of potato soft rot caused by Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica.

To discover potential inhibitors of the quorum sensing (QS) system, a library of microbial culture extracts was screened with Chromobacterium violaceumCV026 strain. The culture extract of Streptomyces xanthocidicus KPP01532 contained quorum-sensing inhibitors (QSIs) of the CV026 strain. The active constituents of the culture extract of strain KPP01532 were purified using a series of chromatographic procedures, and based on data from NMR and mass spectroscopy, piericidin A and glucopiericidin A were identified. Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica (Eca) is a plant pathogen that causes blackleg

Review of methods for the reduction of dietary content and toxicity of acrylamide.

Potentially toxic acrylamide is largely derived from heat-induced reactions between the amino group of the free amino acid asparagine and carbonyl groups of glucose and fructose in cereals, potatoes, and other plant-derived foods. This overview surveys and consolidates the following dietary aspects of acrylamide: distribution in food originating from different sources; consumption by diverse populations; reduction of the acrylamide content in the diet; and suppression of adverse effects in vivo. Methods to reduce adverse effects of dietary acrylamide include (a) selecting potato, cereal, and o

Cyclodextrin-based supramolecular deep eutectic solvents modulate curcumin stabilization and the structure-property relationships of potato starch-PVA films.

Potato starch (PS) films require plasticization, but traditional plasticizers often increase hygroscopicity and water sensitivity. Curcumin, due to its poor solubility and instability, is difficult to incorporate into hydrophilic matrices. Here, curcumin-loaded supramolecular deep eutectic solvents (SUPRADES) based on citric acid and α-, β-, or γ-cyclodextrin were introduced into PS-PVA films as an integrated solubilizing, plasticizing, and functional phase. SUPRADES increased the solubility of curcumin from 0.003 to 4.17 mg/mL, and β-SUP provided the strongest protection against light-induced

Enhancing the bioaccessibility and therapeutic potential of curcumin through biomaterial-based delivery systems using native potato starch.

This study investigated the encapsulation of commercial curcumin in potato starch-based capsules and fibers, produced by electrospraying and electrospinning, respectively, with the aim of increasing its bioaccessibility and biological activities. Commercial curcumin was characterized by HPLC-DAD-MS/MS, revealing a curcuminoid composition (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin). In vitro digestion simulation demonstrated that the encapsulation of commercial curcumin allowed a more controlled release of the curcuminoids. The encapsulated curcumin maintained significant antioxidan

Health-beneficial properties of potato and compounds of interest.

Potatoes have shown promising health-promoting properties in human cell culture, experimental animal and human clinical studies, including antioxidant, hypocholesterolemic, anti-inflammatory, antiobesity, anticancer and antidiabetic effects. Compounds present such as phenolics, fiber, starch and proteins as well as compounds considered antinutritional such as glycoalkaloids, lectins and proteinase inhibitors are believed to contribute to the health benefits of potatoes. However, epidemiological studies exploring the role of potatoes in human health have been inconclusive. Some studies support

Alcohol Production, Prevention Strategies, and Inmate Knowledge About the Risk for Botulism From Pruno Consumption in a Correctional Facility--Arizona, 2013.

During July to November 2012, two botulism outbreaks (12 cases total) occurred in one all-male prison; both were associated with illicitly brewed alcohol (pruno) consumption. Inmate surveys were conducted to evaluate and develop prevention and education strategies. Qualitative surveys with open-ended questions were performed among inmates from rooms where outbreaks occurred to learn about pruno consumption. Quantitative surveys assessed knowledge gained after the outbreaks and preferred information sources. For the quantitative surveys, 250 inmates were randomly selected by bed from across the

The complete genome sequence of 'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum', the bacterium associated with potato zebra chip disease.

Zebra Chip (ZC) is an emerging plant disease that causes aboveground decline of potato shoots and generally results in unusable tubers. This disease has led to multi-million dollar losses for growers in the central and western United States over the past decade and impacts the livelihood of potato farmers in Mexico and New Zealand. ZC is associated with 'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum', a fastidious alpha-proteobacterium that is transmitted by a phloem-feeding psyllid vector, Bactericera cockerelli Sulc. Research on this disease has been hampered by a lack of robust culture methods and p

Detection of IgG1 and IgG4 subtypes reactive against potato apyrase in schistosomiasis patients.

In this paper, we showed for the first time that the conserved domains within Schistosoma mansoni ATP diphosphohydrolase isoforms, shared with potato apyrase, possess epitopes for the IgG1 and IgG4 subtypes, as 24 (80%) of the 30 schistosomiasis patients were seropositive for this vegetable protein. The analyses for each patient cured (n = 14) after treatment (AT) with praziquantel revealed variable IgG1 and IgG4 reactivity against potato apyrase. Different antigenic epitopes shared between the vegetable and parasite proteins could be involved in susceptibility or resistance to S. mansoni AT w

Detection and functional characterization of a large genomic deletion resulting in decreased pathogenicity in Ralstonia solanacearum race 3 biovar 2 strains.

Bacterial wilt (brown rot) disease of potato caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is one of the most important bacterial diseases and a major constraint on potato production worldwide. Through a comparative genomic analysis between R. solanacearum'race 3 biovar 2' (R3bv2) strains, we identified a 77 kb region in strain UW551 which is specifically absent in the hypoaggressive strain IPO1609. We proved that IPO1609 indeed carries a 77 kb genomic deletion and provide genetic evidence that occurrence of this deletion is responsible for almost complete loss of pathogenicity of this strain. We carried o
