We have undertaken a randomized, observer-blinded comparison of three different methods of assessing blood pressure in 40 outpatients with hypertension complicating diabetes mellitus: the Hawksley random zero sphygmomanometer (RZS) by two observers using a dual headed stethoscope; the semi-automated Dinamap monitor, and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) using a Spacelabs 90207. The techniques were compared by plotting the difference against average of readings obtained by combinations of two techniques (RZS observer 1 vs 2; RZS (mean observer 1 and 2) vs Dinamap; RZS (mean obser

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between occupational noise exposure and blood pressure.
METHODS: We studied 8811 workers at a metallurgical factory, who were exposed to different levels of noise at the worksite: < or = 80 dB for 8078 workers and > 80 dB for 733 workers. A clinical examination, including measurements of blood pressure (by mercury sphygmomanometer, Korotkoff phases I and V), heart rate (by pulse palpation), body weight and height, was performed. The subjects were stratified into four age groups (18-30, 31-40, 41-50 and > 50 years) and into two body mass index groups:

Background Coastal communities often exhibit dietary habits characterized by high sodium intake due to the frequent consumption of salted and preserved foods. Such patterns may contribute to elevated blood pressure and impaired well-being. This study examined the relationship between sodium intake, blood pressure, and health-related quality of life among fishermen living on Madura Island, Indonesia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2023 to November 2024 involving 137 adult fishermen who met the inclusion criteria and provided informed consent. Sodium intake was asses

BACKGROUND: This study directly examined the effects of antenatal micronutrient supplementation on adolescent blood pressure (BP).
METHODS: This study involved adolescents from two rural counties in western China. Their mothers had previously participated in a cluster-randomized trial of antenatal micronutrient supplementation. All pregnant women were randomized to take a daily capsule of folic acid (FA) as control, folic acid plus iron (IFA), or multiple micronutrients (MMNs) until delivery. Adolescent BP was assessed using a validated electronic sphygmomanometer and converted into percentil

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Different fatty acids may vary in their effect on blood pressure. We tested whether fatty acid classes measured in erythrocytes are associated with blood pressure.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 421 children from Guangzhou, China. Erythrocyte membrane fatty acid concentrations were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured with an electronic sphygmomanometer. Abnormal blood pressure (ABP) was defined as an elevated SBP and/or DBP. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and multivar

No previous studies have employed group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) to investigate the trajectories of tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) in children and its association with the risk of hypertension. This study aims to utilize GBTM to examine the trajectories of TMI and their correlation with the risk of hypertension in Chinese children. A longitudinal cohort study was conducted in Chinese children from 2014 to 2019. Anthropometric measurements and blood pressure readings were recorded annually. TMI was calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters cubed. Blood pressure was de

BACKGROUND: Acute pancreatitis (AP) severity is correlated with systemic infection incidence in the acute phase, and it is important to assess inflammation during the disease course and to recognize infection at an early stage. As in sepsis, inflammation in AP impairs tissue oxygen metabolism and disrupts microcirculation. We performed a vascular occlusion test (VOT) via near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), which noninvasively monitors local oxygen in peripheral tissues, to evaluate tissue oxygen metabolism and blood circulation during the acute AP phase.
METHODS: Tissue oxygen metabolism was m

Hypertensive disorders are the most common medical complications of pregnancy and a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and death. The detection of elevated blood pressure during pregnancy is one of the cardinal aspects of optimal antenatal care. With the outbreak of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the risk for person-to-person spread of the virus, there is a desire to minimize unnecessary visits to health care facilities. Women should be classified as low risk or high risk for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and adjustments can be accordingly made in the frequenc

BACKGROUND: Office blood pressure (OBP) measurement is the most common method of blood pressure measurement. However, it is associated with several pitfalls as white coat effect and masked hypertension. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is usually used for diagnosis of hypertension and elimination of white coat effect. This study aimed to assess the correlation and degree of agreement of the automated sequential blood pressure (ASqBP) with OBP and ABPM. Patients presented to hypertension clinic were included. Each patient had his blood pressure recorded by three methods: OBP using a

OBJECTIVE: Older adults' health has been linked with time in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and recent studies suggest time in sedentary behaviour may also be important. Time-use behaviours (MVPA, light physical activity, sedentary time and sleep) are co-dependent, and therefore their associations with health should be examined in an integrated manner. This is the first study to investigate the relationship between older adults' reallocation of time among these time-use behaviours and markers of cardio-respiratory fitness, obesity and cardio-metabolic risk.

BACKGROUND: Dementia care providers need a clinical assessment tool similar to the blood pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer) used by clinicians and patients for managing hypertension. A "blood pressure cuff " for dementia would be an inexpensive, simple, user-friendly, easily standardized, sensitive to change, and widely available multidomain instrument for providers and informal caregivers to measure severity of dementia symptoms. The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Healthy Aging Brain Care Monitor (HABC-Monitor) for measuring and monitoring the severity o

Hippocrates (460-370 BCE), the father of medicine, developed principles for medical diagnosis and treatment together with a code of ethics. When the first Ptolemy ruled Egypt, he created a great library of 700,000 rolls at Alexandria, which became a repository for the works of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Hippocrates, and all the writings of the known world, but it was destroyed by a great fire. Galen of Pergamum (129-216), who lived 500 years after Hippocrates, was well educated and studied anatomy, surgery, drugs and Hippocratic medicine. His ideas influenced medical thinking for the next 150
