Evaluation of anti-ulcer activity of the leaf extract of Osyris quadripartita Decne. (Santalaceae) in rats.

Osyris quadripartita (OQ) Salzm. ex Decne. has been used to treat peptic ulcer disease in Ethiopian folk medicine, but its efficacy has not been validated. The present study was therefore carried out to evaluate the anti-ulcer activity of 80% methanol leaf extract of OQ in rats. The effect of OQ extract on gastric ulcer in rats in pylorus ligation-induced and ethanol-induced models was studied using single dosing (100, 200, 400 mg/kg) and repeated dosing (200 mg/kg for 10 and 20 days) approaches. Ranitidine (50 mg/kg) and sucralfate (100 mg/kg) were used as the standard drugs. Depending on the

Gastroesophageal reflux disease in children and adolescents: when and how to treat.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is a common presenting complaint in children and adults, and is a frequent reason for physician consultation. GER disease (GERD), whilst benign in the majority of cases, is frequently a chronic condition that has been shown to result in significantly reduced quality of life in children and adolescents. Furthermore, there is emerging evidence that the prevalence of GERD is rising and may have links to adult obesity and other morbidities. Consequently, accurate diagnosis, appropriate management strategies, and timely referral to specialist services are important pri

Antibiotics and antiseptics for surgical wounds healing by secondary intention.

BACKGROUND: Following surgery, incisions are usually closed by fixing the edges together with sutures (stitches), staples, adhesives (glue) or clips. This process helps the cut edges heal together and is called 'healing by primary intention'. However, a minority of surgical wounds are not closed in this way. Where the risk of infection is high or there has been significant loss of tissue, wounds may be left open to heal by the growth of new tissue rather than by primary closure; this is known as 'healing by secondary intention'. There is a risk of infection in open wounds, which may impact on

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease is a chronic inflammatory vasculitis that can affect multiple systems. Mucocutaneous involvement is common, as is the involvement of many other systems such as the central nervous system and skin. Behç̧et's disease can cause significant morbidity, such as loss of sight, and can be life threatening. The frequency of oral ulceration in Behçet's disease is thought to be 97% to 100%. The presence of mouth ulcers can cause difficulties in eating, drinking, and speaking leading to a reduction in quality of life. There is no cure for Behçet's disease and therefore treatme

Gastrointestinal drugs in the elderly.

The pharmacokinetic changes that occur not infrequently when a single drug is taken by an elderly individual are usually not clinically important because of the wide therapeutic index between pharmacological and toxic effects. On the other hand, when multiple medications are administered simultaneously, additive effects may be seen. This concept is extended further in the presence of impaired function of an excretory or of a metabolic organ, such as with renal disease or cirrhosis of the liver. Thus when an agent whose pharmacological half-life is prolonged in the elderly is administered to an

Levothyroxine Therapy in Thyrodectomized Patients.

Administration of the optimal dose of levothyroxine (LT4) is crucial to restore euthyroidism after total thyroidectomy. An insufficient or excessive dosage may result in hypothyroidism or thyrotoxicosis, either one associated with a number of symptoms/complications. Most literature regarding the LT4 dosage deals with the treatment of primary hypothyroidism, whereas a limited number of studies handle the issue of thyroxin replacement after total thyroidectomy. A literature review was performed focusing on all papers dealing with this topic within the last 15 years. Papers that reported a scheme

Prophylaxis and treatment of NSAID-induced gastroduodenal disorders.

A significant percentage of patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) experience some type of adverse gastrointestinal symptoms, lesions of the gastroduodenal tract being clinically the most relevant. NSAIDs cause gastrointestinal damage by 2 independent mechanisms: a topical effect, which is pH and pKa related, and a systemic effect mediated by cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition with a reduction in prostaglandin synthesis. Using endoscopy, gastroduodenal lesions identified include subepithelial haemorrhages, erosions and ulcers. The prevalence of ulceration in NSAID users has

Pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic drug interactions with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are very commonly prescribed, especially in the elderly population. In many countries more than 10 different NSAIDs are available. As the older pyrazole compounds like phenylbutazone, oxyphenbutazone and azapropazone are most prone to pharmacokinetic interactions, the use of these compounds should be avoided where possible. Acidic NSAIDs interact with bile acid-binding resins, resulting in decreased concentrations of NSAIDs in the blood. In earlier reports it was suggested that the absorption of NSAIDs was affected by antacids and sucralfate. M

[Antisecretory and mucosa-protecting drugs in the acute care of peptic ulcer. Review of action principles, healing rates and side effects of approved ulcer drugs and drugs under clinical trial].

Peptic ulcers can be treated successfully with antisecretory drugs and drugs which have a protective effect. Thanks to their good tolerance and a form of administration acceptable to patients, the H2-receptor antagonists have won a leading position amongst the other ulcer therapeutics. It remains to be seen whether the substituted benzimidazoles will develop into a serious competitor. Until now the clinical experiences with the prostaglandins in the treatment of ulcers are not very encouraging.
