Triple Function of Amelogenin Peptide-Chitosan Hydrogel for Dentin Repair.

Biomimetic strategies like peptide-guided collagen mineralization promise to enhance the effectiveness of dentin remineralization. We recently reported that rationally designed amelogenin-derived peptides P26 and P32 promoted apatite nucleation, mineralized collagen, and showed potential in enamel regrowth and dentin remineralization. To facilitate the clinical application of amelogenin-derived peptides and to uncover their effectiveness in repairing dentin, we have now implemented a chitosan (CS) hydrogel for peptide delivery and have investigated the effects of P26-CS and P32-CS hydrogels on

Scanning microscopic observations on dental caries.

This paper presents findings made using special techniques of imaging and/or of specimen preparation to investigate the changes in tooth structure which occur in caries. We have studied both coronal and root caries in enamel, dentine and cementum using scanning electron and confocal scanning optical microscopy. In preparation for backscattered electron (BSE) imaging in the SEM, teeth were stored in 70% ethanol until further dehydration in ethanol and embedding in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Longitudinally cut surfaces were diamond polished and coated with carbon or silver before BSE imaging

Comparison of Mast Cell Count in Oral Epithelial Dysplasia and Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Dentin bonding with etch-and-rinse adhesives involves demineralizing the 5-8µm of the surface dentin to create micro space for resin infiltration. The presence of continuous fluid movement in dentin tubules and positive pulpal pressure prevents complete water replacement by resin monomers. This results in areas of demineralized dentin, which contain collagen fibers without resin infiltration. The exposed collage fibers are subjected to enzymatic degradation leading to less durable hybrid layer. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the remineralizing effect

The caries balance: the basis for caries management by risk assessment.

Dental caries progression or reversal depends upon the balance between demineralization and remineralization. The 'Caries Balance' is determined by the relative weight of the sums of pathological factors and protective factors. Minimally invasive dentistry aims at the least possible removal of enamel or dentin, including reducing pathological factors and enhancing remineralization to avoid any removal of hard tissues. A structured caries risk assessment should be carried out based upon the concept of the caries balance. Following the risk assessment a treatment plan is devised which leads to t

WDR72 models of structure and function: a stage-specific regulator of enamel mineralization.

Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) is a clinical diagnosis that encompasses a group of genetic mutations, each affecting processes involved in tooth enamel formation and thus, result in various enamel defects. The hypomaturation enamel phenotype has been described for mutations involved in the later stage of enamel formation, including Klk4, Mmp20, C4orf26, and Wdr72. Using a candidate gene approach we discovered a novel Wdr72 human mutation in association with AI to be a 5-base pair deletion (c.806_810delGGCAG; p.G255VfsX294). To gain insight into the function of WDR72, we used computer modeling of

Mechanical properties and antibacterial efficacy against Streptococcus mutans biofilms of novel bioactive tooth root coatings in tooth-brushing simulation.

OBJECTIVES: The aging population is retaining more natural teeth, increasing the prevalence of exposed root surfaces. These surfaces are prone to abrasion, erosion, and biofilm accumulation, leading to tissue loss, hypersensitivity, and root caries. The objectives of this study were to: (1) evaluate the surface and mechanical properties of experimental resin coatings containing dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) and nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP) following simulated toothbrushing, and (2) assess their antibacterial efficacy and protective effects compared with co

Effect of 38% Silver Diamine Fluoride on Salivary Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Levels in Children with Early Childhood Caries: A Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries is a major oral health problem in most industrialized countries, affecting the overall quality of life of children. It is caused by the action of bacterial acids on the enamel surface thereby demineralizing it and progressively destroying the tooth. It presents initially as smooth-surface carious lesions affecting the primary maxillary incisors. With the advancement of the lesion, decay progresses further to involve other primary teeth as well and if not treated early, the caries may involve the pulp leading to irreversible pulpitis. Matrix metalloproteinases

Bone Substitutes in Alveolar Ridge Augmentation: A Narrative Literature Review.

Adequate alveolar bone volume is a prerequisite for predictable and long-term success in dental implant therapy. Physiological post-extraction remodeling frequently results in horizontal and vertical ridge deficiencies, which may compromise optimal implant placement. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) has become a cornerstone procedure in implant dentistry, with clinical outcomes largely influenced by the biological and mechanical characteristics of grafting materials. Different bone grafts and their combinations are currently clinically applicable, each exhibiting distinct osteogenic, osteoinduct

MICROBIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT.

An orthodontic appliance in the mouth worsens conditions for its self-cleaning, complicates the teeth care and makes an environment favorable to the soft tooth deposit, in turn, leads to the teeth enamel demineralization. In literature, the majority of works are devoted to the study of the microbial landscape with fixed orthodontic treatment. Despite the obvious relevance, the formation problem of opportunistic and pathogenic microorganisms when treating dentoalveolar anomalies with a removable orthodontic appliance remains understudied. The research aim was to investigate the influence of the
