THE HIDDEN DIVERSITY OF THE ENIGMATIC ARCHIGETES (CESTODA: CARYOPHYLLIDEA) IN NORTH AMERICA: TWO NEW COMBINATIONS AND DESCRIPTION OF A NEW SPECIES FROM GOLDEN SHINER.

Tapeworms of the order Caryophyllidea (Cestoda) are widespread parasites of cypriniform and siluriform fishes. Most species occur in suckers (Catostomidae) in the Nearctic, including 4 species of the enigmatic genus Archigetes Leuckart, 1878. Species of this genus can mature in oligochaetes, i.e., may have a monoxenous (direct) life cycle. In this article, Archigetes notemigoni n. sp. is described from the golden shiner Notemigonus crysoleucas (Mitchill, 1814) (Leuciscidae) in Wisconsin. The new species differs from other Archigetes species in having a small (≤2 mm long), spindle-shaped body w

Catadiscus marielaosornae n. sp. (Digenea: Diplodiscidae) infecting the intestine of Peters' thin-toed frog, Leptodactylus petersii (Steindachner) (Anura: Leptodactylidae) from the Yahuarcaca Lake System, Amazon River (Leticia, Colombia), with phylogenetic analysis.

We describe Catadiscus marielaosornae Cajiao-Mora and Bullard n. sp. (Diplodiscidae) from the intestine of Peters' thin-toed frog, Leptodactylus petersii (Steindachner) (Anura: Leptodactylidae) from the Yahuarcaca Lake System, Colombia. We assigned our specimens to Catadiscus Cohn, 1904 because they have a smooth-surfaced, pyriform body, centrally-constricted ventro-terminal acetabulum that lacks an accessory sucker, pharynx with extramural sacs, oesophageal bulb, and single testis. The new species differs from all but Catadiscus rodriguezi Caballero, 1955, Catadiscus marinholutzi Freitas and

Unusual presentation of an infected Meckel's diverticulum with umbilical perforation and granulomatous lesion in a young Adult: A rare case report from a resource-constrained setting.

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulum (MD), a congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, affects approximately 2 % of the population, but complications occur in only 4-6 % of cases. Symptomatic MD is typically seen in children, with adult presentations being rare and often incidental. Umbilical complications related to persistent vitelline duct remnants are extremely uncommon in adults. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old-male without previous abdominal symptoms presented with a two-year history of dull periumbilical pain, gradually progressing to purulent umbilical discharge, low-grade fever

Synergistic effects of using sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and desiccation in surface inactivation for Toxocara spp.

Toxocara cati and T. canis are parasitic nematodes found in the intestines of cats and dogs respectively, with a cosmopolitan distribution, and the potential for anthropozoonotic transmission, resulting in human toxocariasis. Spread of Toxocara spp. is primarily through the ingestion of embryonated eggs contaminating surfaces or uncooked food, or through the ingestion of a paratenic host containing a third-stage larva. The Toxocara spp. eggshell is composed of a lipid layer providing a permeability barrier, a chitinous layer providing structural strength, and thin vitelline and uterine layers,

New trematode species Lecithostaphylus halongi n. sp. (Zoogonidae, Microphalloidea) and Gymnotergestia strongyluri n. sp. (Fellodistomidae, Gymnophalloidea) from beloniform fishes in Vietnam.

In this study we described two new trematode species, Lecithostaphylus halongi n. sp. (Zoogonidae, Lecithostaphylinae) and Gymnotergestia strongyluri n. sp. (Fellodistomidae, Tergestiinae), on the basis of morphological and molecular data. Adult worms of these two species were collected from, respectively, Hemiramphus spp. (Hemiramphidae) and Strongylura strongylura (Belonidae) caught in the coastal waters of Vietnam. Adult worms of L. halongi n. sp. are morphologically close to Lecithostaphylus gibsoni Cribb, Bray & Barker, 1992 ex Abudefduf whitleyi from Heron Island and Lecithostaphylus dep

Phylogenetic relationships of Ochoterenatrema Caballero, 1943 (Digenea: Lecithodendriidae) with descriptions of two new species.

Ochoterenatrema is a small genus of lecithodendriid digeneans that includes six species parasitic in Neotropical bats in North and South America. Members of this genus are characterized by the presence of a pseudogonotyl formed by thickened tegument on the left side of the ventral sucker. We examined morphology of specimens belonging to five species of Ochoterenatrema from Brazil, Ecuador and the USA and describe two new Ochoterenatrema spp. (Ochoterenatrema sphaerula n. sp. and Ochoterenatrema gracilis n. sp.). These new species are readily differentiated from their congeners by a combination

Regulation of the Actin Cytoskeleton-Linked Ca2+ Signaling by Intracellular pH in Fertilized Eggs of Sea Urchin.

In sea urchin, the immediate contact of the acrosome-reacted sperm with the egg surface triggers a series of structural and ionic changes in the egg cortex. Within one minute after sperm fuses with the egg plasma membrane, the cell membrane potential changes with the concurrent increases in intracellular Ca2+ levels. The consequent exocytosis of the cortical granules induces separation of the vitelline layer from the egg plasma membrane. While these cortical changes are presumed to prevent the fusion of additional sperm, the subsequent late phase (between 1 and 4 min after fertilization) is ch

Molecular and morphological evidence suggests the reallocation from Parastrigea brasiliana (Szidat, 1928) Dubois, 1964 to Apharyngostrigea Ciurea, 1927 (Digenea: Strigeidae), a parasite of boat-billed heron (Cochlearius cochlearius) from the Neotropical region.

Parastrigea brasiliana (Szidat, 1928) Dubois, 1964, was described from (Cochlearius cochlearius) in South America. The taxonomy of this species has been unstable due that it was described as a member of Strigea Abildgaard, 1790. However, the same author one year later transferred it to Apharyngostrigea Ciurea, 1927 and since then, it has been alternatively placed in the genus Apharyngostrigea or Parastrigea Szidat, 1928 from Strigeidae. In the current research, specimens identified as P. brasiliana were collected from type host in southeastern Mexico. We sequenced three molecular markers: the

Tapeworms (Cestoda) of Ictalurid Catfishes (Siluriformes) in North America: Redescription of Type Species of Two Genera and Proposal of Essexiellinae n. Subfam.

Ictalurid catfishes (Siluriformes) in North America harbor proteocephalid tapeworms of the subfamily Corallobothriinae. Type species of 2 of 3 genera of these tapeworms from ictalurids are redescribed, based on museum and newly collected material. Essexiella fimbriata (Essex, 1928) is typified mainly by a wide, umbrella-shaped scolex with a metascolex formed by numerous folds of tissue, anteriorly directed suckers without sphincters, vitellarium bent inwards posteriorly, "flower-shaped" uterus (with anterior, lateral, and posterior diverticula), and a conspicuously pre-equatorial genital atriu

Ruavermis mikebargeri gen. et sp. n. (Digenea: Schistosomatoidea) infecting the yellow-headed temple turtle, Heosemys annandalii (Cryptodira: Geoemydidae), in Vietnam, including an updated phylogeny for the turtle blood flukes.

Ruavermis mikebargeri gen. et sp. n. infects the yellow-headed temple turtles Heosemys annandalii (Boulenger et Robinson) in the Mekong River Basin. It resembles Platt Roberts et Bullard, 2018 and Coeuritrema Mehra, 1933 by having the anterior to posterior anatomical sequence of a ventral sucker, external seminal vesicle, cirrus sac, anterior testis, ovary, transverse vitelline duct, and posterior testis. These genera are further similar by having the combination of an elongate/ovoid aspinous body, a ventral sucker at the level of the body constriction, an oesophagus that terminates in the ant

Redescription of Sciadocephalus megalodiscus Diesing, 1850, An Unusual Neotropical Fish Tapeworm (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae).

The tapeworm Sciadocephalus megalodiscus Diesing, 1850 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae), is redescribed based on newly collected specimens parasitizing tucunare peacock bass, Cichla monoculus Agassiz, 1831 (Perciformes: Cichlidae), in the Peruvian Amazon. Even though this cestode was redescribed 2 decades ago, that redescription did not report some of the unique features of this species. The most unusual characteristics of the species are (1) peculiar formation of the uterus, with fast formation of numerous, tightly packed diverticula protruding ventrally and dorsally, with simultaneous disintegrat

Expression, purification and characterization of two leucine aminopeptidases of the blood fluke, Schistosoma mansoni.

Schistosomiasis is a major neglected tropical disease (NTD) and considered the most important of the human helminthiases in terms of morbidity and mortality. Whereas treatment with praziquantel has been effective since the 1980s, the potential for the emergence of drug resistance has propelled the search for new interventions. Studies have revealed key roles of proteases in parasitic helminths during establishment of infection, tissue invasion, immune evasion, parasite feeding and development throughout the different developmental stages, pinpointing them as possible candidates. The leucine am

The ocellated eagle ray, Aetobatus ocellatus (Myliobatiformes: Myliobatidae), from Borneo and northern Australia as host of four new species of Hornellobothrium (Cestoda: Lecanicephalidea).

Four new species are described in the lecanicephalidean genus Hornellobothrium from the ocellated eagle ray, Aetobatus ocellatus, from Australia and Indonesian Borneo. The species possess flat, laterally expanded immature proglottids and a small internal, glandular apical organ diagnostic of the genus. To date, only 2 valid species are recognized in the genus: Hornellobothrium cobraformis Shipley & Hornell, 1906 , from " Aetobatus narinari " from Sri Lanka, and Hornellobothrium extensivum Jensen, 2005 , from A. ocellatus , also from Australia. Molecular evidence of cryptic diversity in Paracaryophyllaeus (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), parasites of loaches (Cobitidae) in Eurasia, including description of P. vladkae n. sp.

Molecular phylogenetic analysis of an extensive collection of monozoic tapeworms of the genus Paracaryophyllaeus Kulakovskaya, 1961 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), parasites of loaches (Cypriniformes: Cobitidae) in Eurasia, has revealed cryptic species diversity within this long-time monotypic genus, especially in the Paracaryophyllaeus gotoi (Motomura, 1927) species complex [syn. Paracaryophyllaeus dubininorum (Kulakovskaya, 1961); type species]. Epigenetic changes modulate schistosome egg formation and are a novel target for reducing transmission of schistosomiasis.

Treatment and control of schistosomiasis relies on the only available drug, praziquantel, and the search for alternative chemotherapeutic agents is therefore urgent. Egg production is required for the transmission and immunopathology of schistosomiasis and females of S. mansoni lay 300 eggs daily. A large fraction of the total mRNA in the mature female worm encodes one eggshell protein, Smp14. We report that the nuclear receptors SmRXR1 and SmNR1 regulate Smp14 transcription through the recruitment of two histone acetyltransferases (HATs), SmGCN5 and SmCBP1. The treatment of HEK293 cells with

Adaptive evolution of M3 lysin--a candidate gamete recognition protein in the Mytilus edulis species complex.

Marine invertebrate gamete recognition proteins (GRPs) are classic examples of rapid adaptive evolution of reproductive proteins, and hybridizing Mytilus blue mussels allow us to study the evolution of GRPs during speciation following secondary contact. Even with frequent hybridization, positive selection drives divergence of M7 lysin, one of the three Mytilus egg vitelline envelope (VE) lysins. Mytilus trossulus and M. edulis form a broad hybrid zone in the Canadian Maritimes and eastern Maine, isolated by strong (but partial) gamete incompatibility. M7 lysin, however, is an unlikely GRP cont
