Phenolic compounds are some of the most abundant emissions of biomass burning during wildfires. Catechol, the most abundant isomer of benzenediol in biomass burning emissions, undergoes oxidation in the aqueous phase of cloud droplets to form secondary organic aerosol (SOA), including products that absorb light at visible wavelengths, called brown carbon (BrC) chromophores. After cloud evaporation, the remaining submicron SOA particles are susceptible to further oxidant- and light-driven processing. Here, we investigate the multiphase ozone oxidation of the reaction mixture from the aqueous OH

Environmental pollution is a key factor in cardiovascular disease (CVD) development. Several evidences support its impact at the pathophysiology of arteriosclerosis, highlighting the role of the "exposome", a concept that encompasses all environmental factors such as air pollution, water pollution, climate change and noise and light pollution. These factors are associated with an increased risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD), stroke, high blood pressure (HBP), heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF). Currently, air pollution is the main environmental factor related to CVD. Components

INTRODUCTION: Climate change (CC) has been identified as the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. Although health care facilities (HCF) play a central role in the care of populations, there has been no comprehensive assessment of the impact of CC on HCF. The objective of our study was to highlight the components of HCFs affected by CC through a mapping review of the literature.
METHODS: To meet our objective, we first assessed the place of HCFs in relation to CC in the scientific literature and in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports. Bibliometric data fro

Circadian rhythms are a series of endogenous autonomous oscillators that are generated by the molecular circadian clock which coordinates and synchronizes internal time with the external environment in a 24-h daily cycle (that can also be shorter or longer than 24 h). Besides daily rhythms, there exist as well other biological rhythms that have different time scales, including seasonal and annual rhythms. Circadian and other biological rhythms deeply permeate human life, at any level, spanning from the molecular, subcellular, cellular, tissue, and organismal level to environmental exposures, a

We appraise newly accumulated evidence of the impact of particle pollution on the brain, the portals of entry, the neural damage mechanisms, and ultimately the neurological and psychiatric outcomes statistically associated with exposures. PM pollution comes from natural and anthropogenic sources such as fossil fuel combustion, engineered nanoparticles (NP ≤ 100 nm), wildfires, and wood burning. We are all constantly exposed during normal daily activities to some level of particle pollution of various sizes-PM2.5 (≤2.5 µm), ultrafine PM (UFP ≤ 100 nm), or NPs. Inhalation, ingestion, and dermal

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is a widely used pesticide; however, limited experimental work has been completed on its thermal decomposition. CPF is known to decompose into 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCpyol) together with ethylene and HOPOS. Under oxidative conditions TCpyol can decompose into the dioxin-like 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro-[1,4]-dioxinodipyridine (TCDDPy). With CPF on the cusp of being banned in several jurisdictions worldwide, the question might arise as to how to safely eliminate large stockpiles of this pesticide. Thermal methods such as incineration or thermal desorption of pesticide-contamin

Extreme temperatures are now recognized as significant global health threats, driving morbidity and mortality across diverse diseases by compromising epithelial barrier integrity and causing periepithelial inflammation. The epithelial barrier theory posits that environmentally induced barrier dysfunction, driven by modern industrial and urban exposures, leads to compromised surfaces of the exposed tissues accompanied by epithelial activation and barrier dysfunction, microbial dysbiosis, loss of commensal bacteria, opportunistic pathogen colonization, bacterial translocation, inflammation and i

Precipitation is a primary driver of plant production across most agroecosystems. As such, enhanced precipitation forecasting will directly benefit agroecosystem management planning and decisions related to stocking rates, crop selection, restoration seedings, and wildfire fuel loads. When precipitation occurs primarily through convective storms, as is the case in the southern Great Plains, precipitation can be extremely dynamic and difficult to forecast. Providing stakeholders accurate estimates of forecast utility would provide them with the information necessary for proactive land managemen

Exposure of the lungs to particulate matter (i.e. dust, wildfire smoke, air pollution) places individuals at an increased risk for developing chronic respiratory disease. Recent work has demonstrated the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids and their metabolites in promoting the resolution of prolonged inflammation, however a comprehensive understanding of how omega-3 fatty acid balance impacts immune cell populations and crosstalk remains undescribed. We developed a 17-marker, 14-color spectral flow cytometry method to characterize the immunophenotypic changes in the bronchoalveolar space and lung

Exposure to wildfire smoke is associated with both acute and chronic cardiopulmonary illnesses, which are of special concern for wildland firefighters who experience repeated exposure to wood smoke. It is necessary to better understand the underlying pathophysiology by which wood smoke exposure increases pulmonary disease burdens in this population. We hypothesize that wood smoke exposure produces pulmonary dysfunction, lung inflammation, and gene expression profiles associated with future pulmonary complications. Male Long-Evans rats were intermittently exposed to smoldering eucalyptus wood s

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this narrative review, we summarize the peer-reviewed literature published between 2017 and 2022 that evaluated ambient environmental risk factors for primary headache disorders, which affect more than half of the population globally. Primary headache disorders include migraine, tension-type headache (TTH), and trigeminal and autonomic cephalalgias (TAC).
RECENT FINDINGS: We identified 17 articles that met the inclusion criteria via PubMed or Google Scholar. Seven studies (41%) relied on data from US populations. The remaining studies were conducted in China, Taiwan, Ger

Wildfire smoke penetrates indoors, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in smoke may accumulate on indoor materials. We developed two approaches for measuring PAHs on common indoor materials: (1) solvent-soaked wiping of solid materials (glass and drywall) and (2) direct extraction of porous/fleecy materials (mechanical air filter media and cotton sheets). Samples are extracted by sonication in dichloromethane and analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Extraction recoveries range from 50-83% for surrogate standards and for PAHs recovered from direct application to isopropan

Moorland habitats dominated by the dwarf shrub Calluna vulgaris provide important ecosystem services. Drought is projected to intensify throughout their range, potentially leading to increased fire severity as moisture is a key control on severity. We studied the effect of low fuel moisture content (FMC) on fire severity by using 2×2m rain-out shelters prior to completing 19 experimental fires in two sites in Scotland (UK): a dry heath with thin organic soils and a raised bog with deep, saturated peat, both dominated by Calluna vulgaris. Reduced FMC of the moss and litter (M/L) layer at both s

Black carbon (BC) is a key short-lived climate pollutant and a toxic component of PM2.5. This review synthesizes global BC studies published since 2000 and evaluates its spatiotemporal distribution, source contributions, meteorological drivers, and health risks. The compiled evidence shows high concentrations are mainly found in South Asia and Africa, while low concentrations occur in Europe and North America. South American records were limited in the screened literature, and the apparent lower concentrations in this region may partly reflect sparse monitoring coverage rather than a regionwid

Fossil fuel combustion dominates anthropogenic emissions worldwide; however, special attention should be addressed to biomass burning, since it is an increasingly important contributor under warmer, drier fire-weather conditions exacerbated by climate change. These emissions could impact the atmospheric composition of heavily urbanized environments. To assess the influence of biomass burning, along with fossil fuels combustion and soil and plant respiration on Mexico City's atmospheric composition, we conducted a year-long (December 2023-December 2024) isotopic monitoring of atmospheric CO2, c

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder shaped by interactions between genetic susceptibility, environmental exposures, and broader ecological change. Although pesticides, industrial solvents, heavy metals, and air pollutants have long been implicated as potentially modifiable PD risk factors, climate change is now reshaping and amplifying these hazards through rising temperatures, worsening air quality, increased pesticide demand, extreme weather events, and wildfire-related particulate matter. This narrative review moves beyond a conventional exposure-based sum

Particulate matter (PM) exposure is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity and mortality across the world. While arid and semi-arid regions account for more than 40% of terrestrial land, there is a paucity of research investigating the relationship between PM exposure and health outcomes or how risk varies across different populations specific to these climate regions. To address this, we performed a scoping review to assess the extent of literature in arid and semi-arid regions that consider such morbidity and mortality risks from short-term PM exposure. Our review

BACKGROUND: Wildfire events are increasing in frequency and intensity, and aging individuals demonstrate heightened biological susceptibility to air pollution exposures including increased risk of neurological sequelae. Declining ovarian hormones levels that occur with aging in females along with associated systemic physiological and inflammatory changes may contribute to increased cerebral vulnerability to air pollution, representing a potential but underexplored mechanism. Menopause and the menopausal transition represent a period of profound physiological change that affects cardiovascular,

Animal health remains largely absent from climate-health policy, despite growing evidence of climate-related health risks across species. Using Colorado as a model, we identify key climate hazards affecting animals and examine their overlap with human health risks. We synthesized national, regional, and state-specific climate and health, translating human health themes to 3 animal groups: companion animals, livestock (including horses), and wildlife. Findings were validated through interviews with subject-matter experts from state agencies, academia, and nonprofit organizations. Wildfire, air
