Patients with long-standing, severe, erosive rheumatoid arthritis who have extra-articular manifestations and have undergone joint replacement surgery are at increased risk for serious infection and premature mortality. New therapies, including cytokine antagonists, hold great promise for improving the course of rheumatoid arthritis. Nineteen group A streptococcal isolates obtained in western Norway from patients with invasive disease during a period of high morbidity and mortality were examined for clonality and emm gene polymorphism. These isolates belonged to the prevalent serotypes during the outbreak, namely T1, T3 or T6. Computed tomography scout view is a mode of operating a CT system. It is generally used to prescribe CT slices and to display slice locations rather than for direct diagnosis. However, we found that a careful study of CT scout view can contribute significantly to the diagnosis. We show seven abdominal, two chest and two head CT, where the study of CT scout view allowed diagnoses to be made that were not readily apparent from the axial slices.

BACKGROUND: Fournier's gangrene (FG) is a rapidly progressing and life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis of the genital and perineal regions. To estimate the mortality rate associated with FG, Laor et al. developed the FG severity index (FGSI), an index with proven prognostic significance. On the other hand, the C-reactive protein (CRP)/albumin (CAR) ratio is a proven objective marker of inflam-matory response. In light of the foregoing, the objective of this study is to assess the prognostic value of the CAR ratio in predicting mortality in patients with FG in comparison with FGSI.

BACKGROUND: We present a case of skin allograft survival in a patient who previously received a bone marrow transplant from the same HLA-matched donor. DNA fingerprinting of skin biopsies showed mixed cellularity originating from the donor and recipient (68% and 32% donor DNA in the allograft skin and the native recipient's skin, respectively). Histologic sections demonstrated both grade 3/4 rejection and graft-versus-host-disease. We have conducted a systematic review in search for other cases of donor skin allograft survival after a bone marrow or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
