Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 25 environmental isolates of Sporothrix schenckii from northeastern China was investigated. We report a case of seborrheic blepharitis treated with oral itraconazole during a short period. Direct examination using Parker KOH revealed numerous hyphae and spores of Malassezia in the scale. Low-dose itraconazole pulse therapy (200 mg daily, 7 days a month) was quite effective. This is the second case in which we also observed a unique fungal conformation which looked like tinea versicolor. The evidence strongly suggests that Malassezia is one of the major causative agents of seborrheic blepharitis.

Kimitsu Chuo Hospital is located in the middle of Chiba Prefecture along Tokyo Bay. An epidemiological survey of dermatophytosis was made at the dermatology clinic of the hospital from January 1994 through December 1999. We report a case of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis in a 69-year old man who had nodular-ulcerated lesions on the right hand and forearm. Small nodules remained on the right hand after 8 weeks of 0.5 g daily treatment with potassium iodide. We report a case of fixed sporotrichosis in a 2-year-old girl who showed a reddish nodule on her left cheek for 1 year without trauma. Fungi flora-Y staining showed fungal elements from the exudate onthe erosion of this nodule. Sporothrix schenckii was isolated from a culture of the fungus taken from the biopsy specimen. Dermatophytosis of the external auditory meatus is believed to be a fairly rare disease. In the past three and a half years we have had seven cases of dermatophytosis in the external auditory meatus. UNLABELLED: The cause of seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) is still unknown, although many attempts have been made to relate it to infection by Malassezia. Recently Midgley, Gueho & Guillot revised the genus Malassezia to 7 species. We detected Malassezia spores by direct counting using cellotape stripped skin of healthy students or patients; we also cultured Malassezia from these subjects. There are no specialized formulations of antifungal drugs in Japan which are prepared for children. Modification of the therapeutic doses by age groups or by body weight of the patients from the recommended doses for adults as well as special precautions against side effects are needed for pediatric use. Reports focusing on the side effects of topical and systemic antifungal drugs are reviewed. All the newly introduced systemic drugs, such as fluconazole, itraconazole and terbinafine, have been well tolerated during the treatment of fungal infections of neonates and infants.
