Differential and complementary effects of Baizhu and Fuling on spleen deficiency syndrome by regulating microbiota-gut-metabolite axis.

BACKGROUND: Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. (commonly known as Baizhu, BZ) and Poria cocos (Schwan.) Wolf. (referred to as Fuling, FL) are frequently employed in the treatment of spleen deficiency syndrome (SDS) owing to their spleen-tonifying and dampness-eliminating properties. The combination of the two herbs, referred to as the BZ-FL herb pair, exhibited complementary and enhancing effects. Nevertheless, the distinct and complementary mechanisms and effects of BZ and FL individually remain inadequately understood. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the differential and complementar

Glucose-6-phosphatase deficiency.

Glucose-6-phosphatase deficiency (G6P deficiency), or glycogen storage disease type I (GSDI), is a group of inherited metabolic diseases, including types Ia and Ib, characterized by poor tolerance to fasting, growth retardation and hepatomegaly resulting from accumulation of glycogen and fat in the liver. Prevalence is unknown and annual incidence is around 1/100,000 births. GSDIa is the more frequent type, representing about 80% of GSDI patients. The disease commonly manifests, between the ages of 3 to 4 months by symptoms of hypoglycemia (tremors, seizures, cyanosis, apnea). Patients have po

AlphaFold2 SLiM screen for LC3-LIR interactions in autophagy.

In selective macroautophagy/autophagy, cargo recruitment is mediated by MAP1LC3/LC3-interacting regions (LIRs)/Atg8-family interacting motifs (AIMs) in the cargo or cargo receptor proteins. The binding of these motifs to LC3/Atg8 proteins at the phagophore membrane is often modulated by post-translational modifications, especially phosphorylation. As a challenge for computational LIR predictions, sequences may contain the short canonical (W/F/Y)XX(L/I/V) motif without being functional. Conversely, LIRs may be formed by non-canonical but functional sequence motifs. AlphaFold2 has proven to be u

First Report of Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum on Spathiphyllum wallisii in Argentina.

Peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii Regel) is a popular ornamental potted plant in Argentina. During May of 2008 (austral autumn), necrotic lesions of unknown etiology were observed on S. wallisii in a nursery in Pontevedra (34°45'6″S, 58°42'42″W). Plants first showed water-soaked areas starting from the leaf tips. Infected tissue became irregular, brown, dark-to-black lesions on leaves ~12 to 14 mm in diameter surrounded by yellowish haloes. Disease incidence approached 30%. Abundant bacterial streaming was observed from lesions when examined at ×100. Bacteria isolated from lesions formed whit

Distinct performance and ruminal adaptations to ethyl-cellulose rumen-protected methionine and guanidinoacetic acid during a heat stress challenge in lactating Holstein cows.

Thermal stress alters ruminal function and physiology, compromising health and productivity. Methionine enhances endogenous antioxidant synthesis, whereas guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) supports cellular ATP production. Because methionine serves as a methyl donor for the conversion of GAA to creatine, both nutrients are linked to cellular metabolism and antioxidant defense. The objective was to determine effects of rumen-protected methionine (RPM; Mepron®, Evonik) and GAA (GuanAMINO®, ≥ 97% GAA, ∼1% starch, ∼1% moisture; Evonik), fed alone or in combination during heat stress (HS) on production, t

First Report of Bacterial Leaf Spot of Basil Caused by Pseudomonas viridiflava in Argentina.

In June 1998, during a cool, humid period, typical bacterial spot symptoms were observed on basil plantlets (Ocimun basilicum L. 'Royal Louis' and 'Zaes') in a commercial greenhouse in La Plata, Argentina. Affected plants had dark brown to black lesions on cotyledons. Spots on leaves were first water soaked, then became necrotic and progressed inward from the margins. Disease incidence approached 30%. Symptoms were similar to those reported by Little et al. (2) on basil affected by Pseudomonas viridiflava. No pathogenic fungi or viruses were associated with symptomatic plants. Bacterial stream

Interaction of recombinant octameric hemoglobin with endothelial cells.

Hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) may generate oxidative stress, vasoconstriction and inflammation. To reduce these undesirable vasoactive properties, we increased hemoglobin (Hb) molecular size by genetic engineering with octameric Hb, recombinant (r) HbβG83C. We investigate the potential side effects of rHbβG83C on endothelial cells. The rHbβG83C has no impact on cell viability, and induces a huge repression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene transcription, a marker of vasomotion. No induction of Intermolecular-Adhesion Molecule 1 and E-selectin (inflammatory markers) transcrip

Hypertonic-hyperoncotic solutions improve cardiac function in children after open-heart surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Hypertonic-hyperoncotic solutions are used for the improvement of micro- and macrocirculation in various types of shock. In pediatric intensive care medicine, controlled, randomized studies with hypertonic-hyperoncotic solutions are lacking. Hypertonic-hyperoncotic solutions may improve cardiac function in children. The primary objective of this controlled, randomized, blinded study was to evaluate the hemodynamic effects and safety of hypertonic-hyperoncotic solution infusions in children shortly after open-heart surgery for congenital cardiac disease. The secondary objective was

Perflubron emulsion improves hepatic microvascular integrity and mitochondrial redox state after hemorrhagic shock.

Hemorrhagic shock is associated with decreased systemic oxygen delivery, but also with impaired microvascular perfusion, which can result in diminished local oxygen availability even in the presence of adequate cardiac output after resuscitation. Beside surgical interventions to control blood loss, transfusion of stored packed red blood cells represents the current standard of care in the management of severe hemorrhagic shock. Because stored red blood cells are less deformable and show a higher O2 affinity that affects the O2 off-load to tissues, perfluorocarbon-based artificial oxygen carrie

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Consult Series #67: Maternal sepsis.

Maternal sepsis is a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, and is a potentially preventable cause of maternal death. This Consult aims to summarize what is known about sepsis and provide guidance for the management of sepsis during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Most studies cited are from the nonpregnant population, but where available, pregnancy data are included. The following are the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine recommendations: (1) we recommend that clinicians consider the diagnosis of sepsis in pregnant or postpartum patients with otherwise unexplained end-or

[Significance of bromide levels in evaluation of the hemato-encephalic barrier during acute viral meningitis].

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory diseases of the CNS are associated with increased permeability of blood-brain barrier due to vasculitis of cerebral blood vessels leading to regional ischaemia and necrosis. Many substances pass easily from the serum into the CSF through inflamed and damaged blood-brain barrier. Bromide partition test is one of the parameters for evaluation of the blood-brain barrier integrity during CNS inflammatory diseases. As early as 1929 Walter published a monograph on blood-brain barrier accentuating the value of bromide partition test for evaluation of the functional status o

Emerging insights into the gut microbiota as a key regulator of immunity and response to immunotherapy in hepatocellular carcinoma.

The gut microbiota, a complex microbial ecosystem closely connected to the liver via the portal vein, has emerged as a critical regulator of liver health and disease. Numerous studies have underscored its role in the onset and progression of liver disorders, including alcoholic liver disease, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This review provides a comprehensive overview of current insights into the influence of the gut microbiota on HCC progre

Final report of the amended safety assessment of Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam) root extract.

Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam) Root Extract is an extract of the rhizomes of the wild yam, D. villosa. A manufacturing process was described in which cut up and ground rhizomes are combined with an eluant (e.g., oleyl alcohol), the plant material precipitated with addition of a miscible solvent, washed, and redissolved in the original eluant. The extract contains glycoside and steroidal saponins (< or =0.4%), diosgenin (< or =3.5%), alkaloids, tannins, phytosterols, and starch. Levels of heavy metals, 1,4-dioxane, chloroform, methylene chloride, trichloroethylene, and benzene are reported to be
