The water-soluble vitamin riboflavin (RF) plays a critical role in many metabolic reactions, and thus, is essential for normal cellular functions and growth. The liver plays a central role in normal RF metabolism and is the site of maximal utilization of the vitamin. The mechanism of liver uptake of RF has been studied in animals, but no information is available describing the mechanism of the vitamin uptake in the human situation and its cellular regulation. Cholera toxin (CT) treatment (50 micrograms/ml) was used to down regulate the alpha subunit of the stimulatory guanine nucleotide binding protein (Gs alpha) in pineal glands in organ culture, as has been seen in non-neural tissue. BACKGROUND: Tauroursodeoxycholate (TUDC) provides partial protection against taurolithocholate (TLC) induced cholestasis, possibly by inducing a signalling cascade activating protein kinase C (PKC). The potential protective effects of beta muricholic acid (beta-MC), another 7-beta-hydroxylated bile salt, have not previously been studied in TLC cholestasis.

The regulation of the furosemide-sensitive Na+-ATPase activity and ouabain-sensitive (Na+ + K+)ATPase activities from proximal tubules by adenosine was investigated. Periosteal explants obtained from rabbit calvariae are introduced as a model system to study contraction of soft connective tissue. Culturing of these explants resulted in a substantial time-dependent decrease of the surface area which coincided with a similar decrease in volume. We investigated the mechanisms responsible for the anti-lipolytic effect of intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) in human adipocytes. The steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) has recently been shown to be a factor necessary for cholesterol transport into adrenal and gonadal mitochondria, which is the regulated, rate-limiting step in steroidogenesis.
