Gastrointestinal parasites of domestic sheep from Patagonia throughout historical times: A paleoparasitological approach.

Sheep husbandry in Patagonia, Argentina, started at the beginning of the 20th century from European settlers. Sanitary management is minimal, which has serious implications for the sheep health. Sheep can be infested by diverse parasites, with well over 150 species of internal and external parasites reported worldwide. Gastrointestinal parasitism is one of the most common and important infections in sheep concerning the health status, and is the cause of significant morbidity and mortality, which generates considerable production losses. The present work is the first paleoparasitological study

Effects of feed additives and mixed eimeria species infection on intestinal microbial ecology of broilers.

Evaluation of digestive microbial ecology is necessary to understand effects of growth-promoting feed. In the current study, the dynamics of intestinal microbial communities (MC) were examined in broilers fed diets supplemented with a combination of antibiotic (bacitracin methylene disalicylate) and ionophore (Coban 60), and diets containing 1 of 2 essential oil (EO) blends, Crina Poultry (CP) and Crina Alternate (CA). Five treatments were analyzed: 1) unmedicated uninfected control; 2) unmedicated infected control; 3) feed additives monensin (bacitracin methylene disalicylate) + monensin (Cob

Phloretin supplementation ameliorates intestinal injury of broilers with necrotic enteritis by alleviating inflammation, enhancing antioxidant capacity, regulating intestinal microbiota, and producing plant secondary metabolites.

The present study aimed to explore the effects of dietary phloretin (PT) on growth performance, immune response, and intestinal function in broilers with necrotic enteritis (NE). A total of 288 1-day-old Arbor Acres chicks were assigned to 3 groups, with 8 replicates per group and 12 chicks per replicate. Over 6 weeks, birds were fed a basal diet or the same diet supplemented with 200 mg/kg phloretin. Birds in the challenged groups were inoculated with coccildia during d 7 to 9 and Clostridium perfringens(CP) during d 14 to 18. Results showed that CP and coccidia challenge reduced the average

Effect of lipopolysaccharides and mixed Eimeria spp. challenge on performance and bone development in broilers.

Modern-day broilers are prone to disproportionate bone development besides beneficial broiler performance parameters. Cardinally, global concerns on production and welfare parameters are associated with altered intestinal health and bone homeostatic disturbances pertaining to oxidative stress and inflammation caused by coccidiosis. Nonetheless, lipopolysaccharides (LPS) released into systemic circulation during gut barrier integrity disruption also inhibits bone formation. The current study focused on bone health following the co-challenge of LPS and coccidia in broilers. Cobb500 male broi

Epidemiology of caprine gastrointestinal nematodes and associated efficacy of anthelmintic drugs in Punjab districts, India.

Gastrointestinal parasites pose a serious threat to sustainable small ruminant farming worldwide including Indian subcontinent and the control primarily relies on administration of anthelmintic drugs. A continuous surveillance regarding their distribution and efficacy of commonly used anthelmintics is essential for their effective control in a region. In the present study, faecal samples (n = 1962) were collected from goats of 17 districts of Punjab state, India and examined by qualitative and quantitative examination methodologies. An overall prevalence of 93.62% was recorded for gastrointest

Anticoccidial activity of a botanical natural product based on eucalyptus, apigenin and eugenol against Eimeria tenella in broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: Chicken coccidiosis is an intracellular parasitic disease that presents major challenges to the development of the commercial poultry industry. Perennial drug selective pressure has led to the multi-drug resistance of chicken coccidia, which makes the prevention and control of chicken coccidiosis extremely difficult. In recent years, natural plant products have attracted the attention of researchers due to their inherent advantages, such as the absence of veterinary drug residues. The development of these natural products provides a new direction for the prevention and treatment of

Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in bonnet macaque and possible consequences of their unmanaged relocations.

Relocation is one of the mitigating measures taken by either local people or related officers to reduce the human-bonnet macaque Macaca radiata conflict in India. The review on relocations of primates in India indicates that monkeys are unscreened for diseases or gastrointestinal parasites (henceforth endoparasites) before relocation. We collected 161 spatial samples from 20 groups of bonnet macaque across their distribution range in south India and 205 temporal samples from a group in Chiksuli in the central Western Ghats. The isolation of endoparasite eggs/cysts from the fecal samples was by

Characterization of an IgG monoclonal antibody targeted to both tissue cyst and sporocyst walls of Toxoplasma gondii.

Toxoplasma gondii infects animals habiting terrestrial and aquatic environments. Its oocysts and tissue cysts are important for the horizontal transmission of this parasite. The oocyst and tissue cyst walls are crucial for the ability of the parasite to persist in the environment or in animal tissues, respectively. However, the composition of these walls is not well understood. We report the generation of monoclonal antibodies directed against wall components using mice immunized with oocyst antigens of T. gondii. One monoclonal antibody (mAb) G1/19 reacted solely with T. gondii sporozoites. T

High throughput pyrosequencing technology for molecular differential detection of Babesia vogeli, Hepatozoon canis, Ehrlichia canis and Anaplasma platys in canine blood samples.

Canine babesiosis, hepatozoonosis, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis are tick-borne diseases caused by different hemopathogens. These diseases are causes of morbidity and mortality in dogs. The classic method for parasite detection and differentiation is based on microscopic observation of blood smears. The limitations of the microscopic method are that its performance requires a specially qualified person with professional competence, and it is ineffective in differentiating closely related species. This study applied PCR amplification with high throughput pyrosequencing for molecular differenti

Evolution of clinical, haematological and biochemical findings in young dogs naturally infected by vector-borne pathogens.

Longitudinal studies evaluating the evolution of clinical, haematological, biochemical findings in young dogs exposed for the first time to multiple vector-borne pathogens have not been reported. With the objective of assessing the evolution of clinical, haematological and biochemical findings, these parameters were serially monitored in naturally infected dogs throughout a 1-year follow-up period. Young dogs, infected by vector-borne pathogens based on cytology or polymerase chain reaction, were examined clinically and blood samples were obtained at seven different follow-up time points. Dogs

Individual host factors and co-infections affect the probability and excretion intensity of endoparasite infections in dairy cows.

BACKGROUND: Endoparasite infections cause economic losses in dairy farming. Understanding the factors that influence endoparasite prevalence and egg/oocyst excretion is essential for effective parasite control. Environmental and management factors play an important role at herd level; however, factors related to the individual cow, such as the parity number or lactation stage, also contribute to infection. In addition, it is still unclear to what extent co-infections with other endoparasites influence prevalence and egg/oocyst excretion rates. METHODS: Faecal samples from 1,126 cows from 24 d
