Southern Germany is known as tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) risk area; however, the north of the country is almost free of human TBE cases. Due to its location in the transition zone between TBE risk areas and areas with only sporadic cases, Saxony is of importance in the surveillance of TBE. Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), showing high seroprevalence of TBE virus (TBEV) antibodies, are considered to be sentinels for TBE risk assessment. Thus, roe deer could be used as indicators helping to better understand the focality of the TBEV in nature and as a possible source to isolate TBEV. Therefore,

Canine babesiosis has a high prevalence in France and continues to constitute a diagnostic challenge. This paper presents essential data derived from epidemiological surveys in order to define the main features of this disease. Atypical forms are frequent, the diagnosis must be confirmed by blood smears and treatment is based on the use of imidocarb. Prophylaxis currently remains insufficient.

Eighty-two equine sera from 13 farms in northern Colombia were examined for antibodies to Babesia caballi and B. equi using the complement fixation (CF) and the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. Seroreactors to both piroplasms were present on all farms. The IFA test indicated a prevalence of 90% for B. caballi and 94% for B. equi. The CF test detected antibodies to B. caballi in 41% and to B. equi in 65% of the animals. The prevalence of seroreactors in different age groups revealed a significant decline in CF antibodies to B. caballi in animals older than three years. IFA titres for b

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is caused by the tick-borne bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. Symptoms range from moderate illness to severe illness, including cardiovascular compromise, coma and death. The disease is prevalent in most of the USA, especially during warmer months. The trademark presentation is fever and rash with a history of tick bite, although tick exposure is unappreciated in over a third of cases. Other signature symptoms include headache and abdominal pain. The antibiotic therapy of choice for R. rickettsii infection is doxycycline. Preventive measures for Rocky Mountain spott

Studies were conducted over a four-county area of northwest Alabama to determine the association of eastern cottontail rabbits with Dermacentor variabilis, the eastern United States vector of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. A secondary objective was to compare infestations of this tick on rabbits with infestations on commonly encountered rodent species as a means of determining the relative importance of each in the disease transmission cycle. These epidemiologic surveys were conducted in response to reported fatal cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in two counties of the study area. From 202

The genetic diversity of B. canis was investigated by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. For this purpose, we identified a Babesia canis specific DNA probe named pS8. This 1.2 kbp probe can detect as low as 20 pg of B. canis DNA. Results suggest that the pS8 probe is distributed in multiple copies throughout the genome though is probably not itself internally repetitious, i.e. not structured into blocks of tandem units. This probe reveals discrete hybridizing fragments in B. canis enzyme-digested genomic DNA. RFLP patterns obtained with the pS8 probe revealed a large genetic di

A survey for the prevalence of Rocky Mountain spotted fever antibodies in dogs from a well-defined endemic area in Columbus, Ohio (Franklin County), was conducted during the summer of 1981. Seventy-three blood samples from dogs in this area were tested by microimmunofluorescence for antibodies to Rickettsia rickettsii and other rickettsial antigens. Thirty-three (45.2%) of these samples were positive for R rickettsii, with titers ranging from 1:8 to 1:2,048. For comparison, 137 blood samples from dogs at the Franklin County Dog Pound also were tested. One dog (0.7%) from the comparison group w

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at investigating the diversity of pathogens in human-biting ixodid ticks, in relation to their seasonality and associated clinical symptoms.
METHODS: Hard ticks, collected from humans in the course of 23 years, were identified to the species level on a morphological basis. This was followed by DNA extraction and molecular analyses. The latter served to confirm tick species, and to detect important tick-borne pathogens, in particular rickettsiae, Anaplasmataceae, borreliae, and piroplasms.
RESULTS: Among 502 ticks, six species were identified, with the predominanc

Following the death of an 83-year-old man from the district of Bragança, in north-eastern Portugal due to Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), a serological survey was conducted to investigate domestic and wild ruminants. The survey included samples from cattle(n = 94), sheep(n = 30), goats(n = 4), and red deer(n = 10) collected within the affected region and neighboring areas where the human case was reported. CCHF antibodies were detected by ELISA in the serum of sheep, cattle and red deer, corresponding to seropositivity rates of 3.33%, 38.29%, and 60%, respectively, indicating significa

Vector-borne diseases represent various sicknesses that are increasingly significant in human and veterinary health. Among the zoonotic agents transmitted by ticks, infections caused by the intracellular pathogens from the Anaplasmataceae family and piroplasmids (Babesia/Theileria spp.) are particularly notable due to the substantial economic losses they cause in the livestock sector. A study was carried out to assess the prevalence of these pathogens in ticks from ruminants in the province of Valencia (Eastern Iberian Peninsula). Between 2019 and 2022, 1674 ticks were collected from 163 domes

The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, is a major pest to humans and animals, serving as a vector to Rickettsia rickettsii, a bacterium responsible for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Francisella tularensis, which is responsible for tularemia. Although several tactics for management have been deployed, very little is known about the molecular response following pesticidal treatments in ticks. In this study, we used a combined approach utilizing transcriptomics and metabolomics to understand the response of the American dog tick to five common pesticides (amitraz, chlorpyrifos, fipron

Baggio-Yoshinari Syndrome (BYS) is an emerging Brazilian tick-borne infectious disease that clinically mimics Lyme Disease (LD) present in the Northern Hemisphere. LD is caused by spirochetes belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex and transmitted by Ixodid ticks of complex Ixodes rticinus. On the contrary, BYS is transmitted by hard Ixodid ticks of the genera Amblyomma, Rhipicephalus and Dermacentor. In 1992, the first cases of BYS were described in patients that developed EM rash, flu-like symptoms and arthritis after tick bite episodes. Since these findings, research in BYS

The first etiologically confirmed cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in humans were detected in Turkey in 2002. Since then, thousands of cases have been reported from different parts of the country. Hyalomma (Hy.) marginatum is considered the main vector tick of CCHFe in Turkey, and the primary infection route for humans is known to be the tick bite. This study was carried out between January 2013 and December 2014 in Thrace, Turkey, to determine monthly prevalence and intensity of tick infestation in cattle and, ultimately, to predict the related risk of human exposure to ticks a

PURPOSE: Coxiella burnetii is known for its potential as veterinary and human bacterial pathogen. The bacteria have been described in ticks, but their role in transmission of Q fever in humans is considered low. Coxiella endosymbionts closely related to C. burnetii have been also isolated from an extensive range of tick species and evidence is growing that these endosymbionts could be linked to human bacteremia. The aim of this study was to get new information on the presence of Coxiella species in ticks infesting wild and domestic hosts in Sardinia, Italy.
METHODS: Here, 138 ticks collected

The blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, is the primary vector of several tick-borne pathogens, including those causing Lyme disease and babesiosis, in the eastern United States and active collection methods for this species include dragging or wild animal sampling. Nest boxes targeting mice may be an alternative strategy for the surveillance and collection of immature I. scapularis feeding on these hosts and would be much safer for animals compared to small mammal trapping. We constructed double-walled insulated nest boxes (DWINs) with collection tubes mounted below the nesting chamber an

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has a central role among tick-borne infections in southern Russia. Multiple cases of disease are recorded annually in most regions with the СCHF foci; moreover, an expansion of the geographic range of the disease has been noted. Since 1999, more than 2300 people have fallen ill in Russia. Ticks are the main vectors and reservoirs of the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). As it is currently known, CCHFV has been detected in ticks of 33 species. In the period 2012-2019 in the south of the European part of Russia, more than 38,000 ticks of 14 spe

We estimated the probability of exposure of people to questing ticks, infected with bacterial agents of the tick-borne zoonoses-in Aosta Valley, western Alps, Italy. We collected ticks by dragging, and from collectors' clothes in three hiking trails, which were divided into an internal path, with short vegetation, and an external part with taller grass. Dragging yielded 285 Ixodes ricinus nymphs and 31 adults, and two Dermacentor marginatus adults. Eleven I. ricinus nymphs and 9 adults were collected from collectors' clothes. Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. was identified by PCR in 12 out of 30 I. r

Over the past two decades, the northward spread of Ixodes scapularis across Ontario, Canada, has accelerated and the risk of Lyme disease has increased. Active surveillance is a recognized and effective method for detecting reproducing populations of I. scapularis. In this study, we conducted field sampling consistent with an active surveillance approach from May to October 2014 at 104 sites in central, eastern, and southern Ontario to determine the current distribution of I. scapularis and other tick species, and enhance our understanding of the geographic risk associated with Borrelia burgdo

Rickettsia philipii (type strain "Rickettsia 364D"), the etiologic agent of Pacific Coast tick fever (PCTF), is transmitted to people by the Pacific Coast tick, Dermacentor occidentalis. Following the first confirmed human case of PCTF in 2008, 13 additional human cases have been reported in California, more than half of which were pediatric cases. The most common features of PCTF are the presence of at least one necrotic lesion known as an eschar (100%), fever (85%), and headache (79%); four case-patients required hospitalization and four had multiple eschars. Findings presented here implicat
