Introduction: Deep neck infections are severe complications of the inflammatory processes in the upper respiratory tract. They can be divided into retropharyngeal, parapharyngeal, peritonsillar, and submandibular abscesses, depending on the affected region. Deep neck infections are considered acute bacterial complications with a progressive course and life-threatening nature, and that is why they require an immediate, broad-spectrum, intravenous antibiotic therapy. Aim: The aim of our retrospective analysis was to characterize the population of children affected by retro- and/or parapharyngeal

OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the different clinical presentations of tuberculous otitis media and the management of selected cases.
CASE REPORT: We report four cases of tuberculous otitis media with different clinical presentations, encountered between 1998 and 2002. None of the cases showed improvement with local or systemic antibiotics. The diagnosis, complications and management of these cases are discussed.
CONCLUSIONS: A high index of clinical suspicion of tuberculous otitis media is required in patients who do not respond to standard antibiotic therapy for (nontuberculous) chronic middle

OBJECTIVE: To present our experience with the diagnosis and treatment of lateral sinus thrombosis (LST) secondary to otogenic disease.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We have retrospectively reviewed all the cases of LST caused by chronic otitis media in ten years.
RESULTS: In our series of five patients, four patients were successfully treated by surgery without opening the sigmoid sinus. On the other hand, one of our patients developed hydrocephalus and ataxia during preoperative antibiotic treatment.
CONCLUSION: Most patients with thrombotic/nonabscessed sinuses will have successful outcomes with

OBJECTIVE: Chondroblastoma is an uncommon benign neoplasm of cartilaginous origin usually involving the long bones. The temporal bone is a rare location for this tumor. The clinical profile, optimal medical and surgical management, and outcomes of treatment for temporal bone chondroblastoma remain unknown.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the SCOPUS, PubMed, and CENTRAL databases for case reports and case series on patients with histopathologically proven temporal bone chondroblastoma. Data on demographics, clinical manifestation, surgical management, adjuvant treatment, and outco

CONCLUSION: When selecting the appropriate surgical approach the pathological type of tumor, the physiological status as well as the functional aspects should be considered. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each surgical technique and knowledge of the particular tumor biology facilitates selection of the most appropriate surgical approach and a successful outcome.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to review cases that underwent skull base surgery for a variety of tumors that involved the temporal bone. We reviewed a single center's 25-year experience for epidemiologic cha

This study describes the coordinated treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and cervical spine disorders in patients diagnosed with Meniere's disease. The aim was to follow up treatment outcomes for three years with regular follow-up examinations every six months. Of the 31 patients with Meniere's disease who participated in a controlled comparative study on the signs and symptoms of TMD, 24 participated in a subsequent controlled comparative study on the signs and symptoms of cervical spine disorders (CSD). These 24 Meniere's disease patients (ten males and 14 females) agreed to parti

BACKGROUND: It is common to find workers in developing countries having residual ear problems from childhood affections. When exposed to continuous noise in industry, they might exhibit different patterns of audiometric findings. The aim of this study was to examine the good ear in a group of workers exposed to continuous noise in textile industry with a perforated drum in the other ear from childhood otitis media.
METHODS: a 1:2 case control design involving a group of 36 cases and 2 matched groups, same age and duration of exposure was performed. A relevant questionnaire was used and each w

BACKGROUND: An elongation of the styloid process or an ossification of the stylohyoid ligament can be the cause for a styloid syndrome and may lead to craniocervical pain, globus sensation and dysphagia. Pathophysiologically, the styloid syndrome is related to an irritation of the surrounding nerves, the carotid artery or the pharyngeal mucosa. There are various alternatives for its treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study analyzed retrospectively the data of eleven patients, who were treated for a styloid syndrome. All patients were placed on a stepwise therapy plan, which began with a me

INTRODUCTION: Skull base osteomyelitis typically presents in an immunocompromised patient with severe otalgia and otorrhoea. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the commonest pathogenic micro-organism, and reports of resistance to fluoroquinolones are now emerging, complicating management. We reviewed our experience of this condition, and of the local pathogenic organisms.
METHODS: A retrospective review from 2004 to 2011 was performed. Patients were identified by their admission diagnostic code, and computerised records examined.
RESULTS: Twenty patients were identified. A facial palsy was present in

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to review the various clinical features associated with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) in the head and neck region and to discuss the difficulty of diagnosing patients with early stage WG.
METHODS: Between January 1998 and August 2007, WG was diagnosed and treated in 16 patients at the Department of Otolaryngology, Hyogo College of Medicine. Clinical and operating records of these patients were analyzed retrospectively. Diagnosis was based on the Japanese criteria proposed by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare in 1998.
RESULTS: Ten patients
