Neuromuscular Fatigue of Cycling Exercise in Hypoxia.

INTRODUCTION: The understanding of fatigue in hypoxia is limited due to: lack of control in arterial saturation, different exercise intensities and hypoxia levels, lag time between exercise cessation and fatigue evaluation. We aimed at evaluating fatigue during cycling and immediately after exhaustion (EXH) in normoxia, moderate and severe hypoxia at relative and absolute intensities. METHODS: Thirteen subjects completed three sessions in normoxia, moderate, and severe hypoxia with intensity based on percentage of normoxic maximal power output (NOR, MODABS, SEVABS) plus two sessions where int

Hyperventilation as a strategy for improved repeated sprint performance.

Repeated high-intensity sprints incur substantial anaerobic metabolic challenges and create an acidic muscle milieu that is unfavorable for subsequent performance. Hyperventilation, resulting in respiratory alkalosis, acts as a compensatory mechanism for metabolic acidosis. This study tested the hypothesis that hyperventilation performed during recovery intervals would attenuate performance decrement in repeated sprint pedaling. Thirteen male university athletes performed 10 sets of 10-second maximal pedaling on a cycle ergometer with a 60-second recovery between sets under control (spontaneou

A new, transportable ergometer for the measurement of musculotendinous stiffness during wrist flexion.

We present here a new, dedicated mechanical device for monitoring quick-release movements of the wrist. The ergometer was designed to easily assess musculotendinous properties during wrist flexion. Maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and quick-release (QR) movements during wrist flexion were performed on 14 subjects. A validation of the ergometer, using a test-retest methodology, was performed to assess its reliability and sensitivity. The device has been technically and biomechanically validated in a range of situations, including inertia measurement (mean inertia was found 0.0119+/-0.0012 N

[Spiro-ergometric studies after corrective surgery of tetralogy of Fallot].

Treadmill exercise electrocardiography and spirometry was recorded in 61 patients (aged from 5 to 23 years) who underwent corrective surgery for tetralogy of Fallot. The Bruce-protocol and a modified interval-protocol were compared to find out their ability to induce arrhythmias. Supraventricular arrhythmias were predominantly provoked by the interval-protocol while maximal exhaustion is often necessary for inducing ventricular arrhythmias which we found in 23% of our patients. Most of them were seen in the periods of recovery between or after the exercise. We propose a combination of both pro

Rate adaptive atrial pacing in the bradycardia tachycardia syndrome.

In 42 patients (26 men, 16 women; mean age 69 +/- 10 years), who were paced and medicated with antiarrhythmic drugs for the bradycardia tachycardia syndrome, chronotropic response and AV conduction with rapid atrial pacing during exercise were studied. Patients were included if they had no second- or third-degree AV block, no complete bundle branch or bifascicular block, and a PQ interval < or = 240 ms during sinus rhythm at rest. The interval between the atrial spike and the following Q wave (SQ) was measured in the supine position at rest with an AAI pacing rate of 5 beats/min above the sinu

Cardiorespiratory fitness and working memory in persons with traumatic brain injury: a cross-sectional analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment is a highly impactful consequence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and there are limited evidence-based treatment practices to combat these impairments. Evidence from other populations suggest that aerobic exercise training (AET) is beneficial for a variety of cognitive deficits, but the research in persons with TBI to date is equivocal. One potential reason is the heterogeneity of exercise prescriptions and outcome measures. This stems from the fact that studies have not been designed based on previous data supporting a specific AET prescription to target a c

Development of an indoor rowing machine with manual FES controller for total body exercise in paraplegia.

Concept 2 indoor rowing machine (Concept 2 Inc., USA) was modified for functional electrical stimulation (FES) rowing exercise in paraplegia. A new seating system provides trunk stability and constrains the leg motion to the sagittal plane. A 4-channel electrical stimulator activates the quadriceps and hamstrings in Drive and Recovery phases of the rowing cycle, respectively. Two force-sensing resistors (FSR) on the handle measure the thumb press as the command signal to the electrical stimulator. Optical encoders measure the positions of the seat and handle during rowing. To synchronize the v

Does Cybex testing increase knee laxity after anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions?

Long-term stability of the knee after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is imperative. Testing protocols that use isokinetic systems are commonly performed despite controversies as to their safety. The purpose of this study was to test whether one episode of isokinetic testing would cause an increase in anterior tibial translation. Twenty-four subjects who had anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions 153 to 300 days earlier volunteered for the study. Initially, subjects walked on a treadmill at 5 km/hr for 10 minutes to test the effect of exercise on displacement measurements. One we

Muscle glycogen metabolism is rapidly dysregulated in critical illness, which may have implications for muscle ATP resynthesis and ICU-acquired weakness.

The association of perturbed skeletal muscle metabolism with intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired weakness (ICUAW) is not clear. The objective of the present study was to characterize temporal changes in skeletal muscle mitochondrial function, ATP concentration, and substrate utilization during and up to 6 mo post-ICU admission in critically ill patients, and to delineate mechanisms underpinning ICUAW by comparing the expression of genes involved in skeletal muscle mitochondrial function and substrate utilization in the critically ill patients to control groups that had either undergone elective

Eccentric-Oriented Strength Training in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rehabilitation: A Scoping Review.

Background and Objectives: Persistent quadriceps weakness, muscle atrophy, and functional deficits are common following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and may compromise return to sport and increase the risk of reinjury. Eccentric-oriented strength training has been widely used to enhance muscle strength and hypertrophy in various musculoskeletal conditions; however, its specific application within ACL rehabilitation remains insufficiently explored. The aim of this scoping review was to map the existing evidence on the use of eccentric-oriented strength training in ACL rehabil

The impact of warm-up intensity and duration on maximal effort limited cardiopulmonary exercise testing parameters in healthy young adults.

The impact of warm-up protocols on peak oxygen uptake (V̇o2peak) during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) remains unclear. This study investigated the effect of warm-ups of different durations and intensities on V̇o2peak in healthy young adults during maximal-effort CPET cycle ergometry. Recreationally active participants (10 males, 4 females; 27 ± 4 yr) performed five CPETs, each preceded by one of five randomized conditions: 1) no warm-up (NWU), 2) short-duration/low-intensity (SD/LI) warm-up (5 min at 0.5 W·kg-1), 3) long-duration/low-intensity (LD/LI) warm-up (10 min at 0.5 W·kg-1),

Transferrin Saturation Is a Better Predictor Than Ferritin of Metabolic and Hemodynamic Exercise Responses in HFpEF.

BACKGROUND: Iron is a critical factor in cardiac function, oxygen carrying capacity in the blood, and mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle, all of which are key elements of oxygen uptake and utilization during exercise. However, the impact of iron status on hemodynamic responses to exercise and component variables of peak oxygen consumption in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to determine the relationship between markers of iron status and comprehensive exercise response patterns and clinical outcomes in patie

Atrial Mechanics in Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction: Effect of a No-Implant Interatrial Shunt.

BACKGROUND: The atria play an important role in the pathophysiology of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Decreased left atrial strain is associated with worse clinical outcomes. The impact of no-implant interatrial shunting on atrial structure and function has not been described. METHODS: We characterized the left atrial (LA) and right atrial strain-pressure relationship at rest and during exercise, before and after creation of a no-implant interatrial shunt. We included patients with New York Heart Association class II, III, or ambulatory IV heart failure with a left ventricula

Right Ventricular Function During Exercise After Pulmonary Endarterectomy for Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension.

Background Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension improves resting hemodynamics and right ventricular (RV) function. Because exercise tolerance frequently remains impaired, RV function may not have completely normalized after PEA. Therefore, we performed a detailed invasive hemodynamic study to investigate the effect of PEA on RV function during exercise. Methods and Results In this prospective study, all consenting patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension eligible for surgery and able to perform cycle ergometry underwent cardiac mag
